Lets talk about Steve Carell's favorite movie of the year, She Said. German filmmaker Maria Schrader (Emmy-winner for directing Unorthodox) directed the motion picture. Rebecca Lenkiewicz (co-screenwriter of Ida) adapted the screenplay from the 2019 award-winning book of the same name. The film stars Carey Mulligan, Zoe Kazan, Patricia Clarkson, Samantha Morton and Tom Pelphrey. Three-time Oscar-nominee Nicholas Britell composed the score. Brad Pitt and Dede Gardner are credited as producers. 6 of Gardner's films were nominated for Best Picture. Two of them produced winners -- 12 Years A Slave and Moonlight.
The movie follows two real-life journalists (both wrote the book) trying to uncover Harvey Weinstein's sexual abuses of women in the film industry. This will inevitably be compared to All the President's Men, Spotlight, The Post and Bombshell. But will it live up to those expectations Oscar-wise?

On this day of July 15 2022 I'm thinking that it will indeed win BP. However, in the future this opinion may change It's topical, zeitgeisty, female-led and female-made, supposedly empowering and it also looks like it's made in such a non-specific way that it'll be easier for everyone to eat up. I don't consider a repeat of the Spotlight wins (BP + Script) to be impossible.

Maybe it gets traction for Screenplay or Actress for Mulligan (or a surprise supporting nom) but I think that’s it. Think it’s more likely to get blanked than get a BP nom.

I think it could very well go the route of a Spotlight/All the President's Men: extremely timely material that plays to the current climate. I can see a world where it gets nods for Picture/Actress/Supporting Actress/Original Screenplay and maybe some random tech like Editing. Of course, it could also go the way of Truth or State of Play.

She Said wouldn't be eligible for Original Screenplay. It is based on a non-fiction book. Unless of course, we see another Gangs of New York situation.
I will say Picture, Director, Actress (Mulligan), Supporting Actress (Kazan), Adapted Screenplay, Editing, and Original Score for now.

Maybe a Supporting Actress nomination for Samantha Morton?

Steve Carell's favorite movie of the year? Have you ever seen the American version of The Office? It's Steve Carell's most popular line.

Maybe a Supporting Actress nomination for Samantha Morton? I am wondering how they sort this out. Will Mulligan and Kazan for leading, and Morton for Supporting? Will Mulligan for Lead and have Morton and Kazan go for supporting.

It's late and I'm at an airport right now so I'm a tad distracted. I actually was thinking Samantha Morton as the Supporting Actress player. Kazan strikes me very much as the person who would miss the acting nod in favor of the more established actresses.

We all have busy lives and contribute to these boards when we have down time to distract ourselves. I really hope everything is going alright with you btw.
What about Tom Pelphrey here? He seems to be blowing up. Not just with Ozark, but seems to have attached himself to quality roles and films.

I doubt it's a Supporting Actor play, but if so, I'd bet on Braugher over Pelphrey.

I think it can definitely hit Picture. Supporting actress, Adapted Screenplay and Score very much on the cards.

This looks very dull...but could even win BP if it plays it's cards right and there's no juggernaut competitor against it.

Looks excellent. If it's anywhere as good as Spotlight, it's winning BP. If Zoe Kazan goes supporting than I could see noms for her or Morton or possibly both, and Mulligan looks like a solid contender in actress. I've been predicting Braugher sight unseen but unless there's a lot more to his role than shown in the trailer, it looks more like Schrieber in Spotlight than Robards in President's Men. Don't think any of the male cast gets in at this point.

Yes definite BP and cottail nominations for editing, writing. Braugher's role seems too small/basic at first blush. Mulligan could definitely go in for Actress, Morton for S. Acctress (at least she will be campaigned). Kazan's role doesn't seem that baity in the trailer tho she will be campaigned too obviously, tho not sure in which category.
From the brief clip they show of Ehle... I was thinking she could be a one-scene wonder and she definitely has the chops to be potentially nominated if her scene is significant.
Not feeling anyone else.

Not that I think it will have any bearing on anything outside of Film Twitter nonsense, but already seeing some discourse over the fact that Brad Pitt’s production company is behind this.

Why is that controversial? Because Pitt was investigated for being physically abusive in 2016 and he's got a producing credit on this thing. Pretty much a nonstory.

From what I heard it was by and large because of his working relationship with Weinstein AFTER discovering his behavior towards his exes Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie. He has been called out for being hypocritical. I suspect that will only become louder as the award season progresses.

I think this looks unfortunately bad which makes me convinced it will win BP Nothing screams Academy the more than patting itself on the back for addressing a problem they've only solved 1% of.
