We're closing out the first half of the 2022 with Elvis, a biopic about the one and only Elvis Presley. The reviews have been quite good so far: 78% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. 7.9/10 IMDB rating. 88/100 critics score for the Broadcast Film Critics Association.
Austin Butler is getting wide acclaim for playing The King. Baz Luhrmann co-wrote, co-produced, and directed the motion picture. Believe it or not, but he's only been nominated for one Oscar. The Academy did not nominate Luhrmann for best director or best original screenplay for Moulin Rouge!. His solo nomination came from producing.

Actor, costume, makeup, sound
I could see picture, production design and editing in the mix too. BH is a template for this kind of movie doing really well.

At this early point I'm imagining 5 - Actor, Production Design, Costume Design, Sound, Makeup. Maybe a sneak in the BP lineup too if the movie sticks around and is not quickly forgotten. Of course Editing is also in the mix, especially with Luhrmann's kinetic style.

I'll say actor, PD, and costumes. Outside shot at a BP nod and maybe screenplay. I think its good enough but the early release will be an obstacle. But if Butler doesn't get in something is wrong.

My vote is Picture, Actor, Sound and Costume.
If Butler is getting a best actor nomination and seen as a contender, his movie will most likely go with it. With 10 slots available, I can see the movie slipping in.

Actor, Sound, Costumes feel like very strong bets. Picture, Makeup and even Editing and Production Design are on the table.

Not sure if you've seen it yet but although I liked it I thought the editing was kind of a mess at times so I hope it doesn't get a nod there. Not surprised Baz apparently had a 4 hour cut at one point because it feels very "chopped up" especially early on. It feels more cohesive once you get to the comeback special, the Vegas years, and his subsequent downfall. But you could make an entire movie about Elvis before he joined the army and that's really his most interesting period so it feels like a lot was left on the cutting room floor there and that sequence feels a bit fragmentary.

Haven't seen it yet, but I think about how chop-heavy Luhrmann's films generally are and the fact that it spans such a large period of time makes me think it'll be very flashy in that respect, and that's what the Academy gravitates towards. Remember they gave Bohemian Rhapsody the win -- anything goes with this crew.

Confused why more people aren’t predicting a makeup nom. It has at least two showy transformations that the Academy will eat up.

Just saw it. If Elvis continues to be a hit, I think we need to start considering Hanks in Supporting. He’s going against type in a villainous role, he’s got the physical / vocal transformation, it’s a borderline lead role and he’s got so many baity scenes.
Makeup is 100% happening too imo.

I'm confused by his reviews. Is he annoying or what?

Hanks has some of the worst reviews of the year and of his career. The Academy have mostly ignored him at the best of times for nearly 20 years (he needed a film with 80 on Metacritic, tremendous personal reviews and hitting almost every critics awards group and industry precursor to finally get nodded again for A Beautiful Day In The Neighbourhood). They are not going to nominate him for a Razzie-bait performance that came out in the summer. He's going to have zero traction with critics awards (who will probably only single out Butler if anyone, whose reviews outshine Hanks by a gigantic degree), so this is just going to be another Hanks performance where his co-star gets nodded. He's not happening, aside from maybe at the Razzies. They've nominated bad/mixed reviewed performances before, but the Academy don't like Hanks that much to nod him for a horribly reviewed performance that came out in June.
