This year's big Sundance hit, Cha Cha Real Smooth, is now available in theaters and on Apple. It is getting extremely good praise. 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. 7.5/10 on IMDB. 86/100 from the Broadcast Film Critics. What do you think of its Oscar chances? Last year, Apple made a big purchase from the Sundance Film Festival called CODA, and they ended up going 3 for 3 at the Oscars.
For the record, I have not seen the film yet. It's on my "To-Do List" for Apple's programs.

Doubt it. Dumped in June and while Apple had a big success with CODA, they have a Scorsese movie this year and that's clearly their priority. CODA did very well with its release strategy but they're unlikely to replicate it.

Last year, Apple campaigned for three films -- CODA, Finch and Macbeth.
Apple only has three films with major awards contention -- beyond Animated Feature -- which could be players. You have Smooth, Argylle (Matthew Vaugh spy-thriller with an all-star cast), and Moon. Luck and Spellbound are more animated feature contenders.

The Tragedy of Macbeth was a black-and-white arthouse adaptation of a Shakespeare film featuring actors and a director who could not give any less of a fuck when it comes to campaigning. Apple obviously wanted it to do well, but it was always going to be a hard sell because of the kind of movie it is. CODA was a record-breaking buy at Sundance and people were talking about it early on, much more than they are for Cha Cha Real Smooth. In retrospect, people should have been paying more attention to CODA as a contender, but it benefited from word-of-mouth after an early release and having the more prominent films in contention winnow away as the season wore on, and CODA rode the charm wave hard against the more austere The Power of the Dog, which clearly lost a lot of momentum for one reason or another as the season wore on. CODA was always a primary film in Apple's arsenal; it's just that people didn't think a Sundance movie with an early release would resurge in the end. But that's unlikely to happen again this year, especially as one of the films Apple has is a Martin Scorsese-directed epic Western with DiCaprio and De Niro that they spent the yearly GDP of a small nation to bankroll. That will be their priority, and they have no reason to sink a lot of effort into Cha Cha Real Smooth because the win upside is so low.

I believe Brother Fease is the one who told us we were ignoring Coda. This type of movie doesn't have a topic that the Academy would nominate but the writer is starting to make a name for himself so if original screenplay is weak this year, I see possible screenplay.

Correct. I said CODA was going to be a major contender. A lot of posters here said Troy had no chance. Marlin or bust. I also said Smith was going to win the BAFTA and most people hear thought I was nuts.

So I watched the movie last night. It was okay. I might even call it "barely passing". The only thing particularly award worthy was Vanessa Burghardt as the autistic character Lola. Everything else felt like a "rookie film". Despite its strong reviews, I don't think this movie will go many places. So this is no where near CODA territory.

Wait, who the fuck voted for Burghardt?!? How are you doing? Did I miss any potential Oscar-contenders? So far, I have done four animated features (Turning Red, Bob's Burger, Lightyear, Bad Guys), five action movies (Top Gun 2, Northman, Dr. Strange, Everything, The Batman), an indie dramedy, and a biopic.

This is the time of the year, I take a break from hardcore movie watching.
