^ Great pick on the VU.
10-ish ........Off the top of my head:
Van Morrison - Cypress Avenue
Most people find Astral Weeks beautiful but it also terrifies you if you unlock the record because it's a singular masterpiece - and this song is about a guy, out of his mind, obsessed with a 14 year old schoolgirl and his delusions - but not touching her. He sits in his car, drinks his wine, just to catch a glimpse of her walking by. He's gone....and she's out of view ........if it came out today........it would be banned.
Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter
Husker Du - Diane
The Sex Pistols - Bodies - Utterly horrific song and performance about abortion because whether you are for it or against it - it's horrible. There are very few vocal performances that equal the one in this song. It's brilliant and awful - equally..
Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac - The Green Manalishi (With The Two Prong Crown)
Violent Femmes - Country Death Song - Deranged song that ties into many dark strands of American culture and unheard American music too.
Townes Van Zandt - Rake - Some of the greatest lyrics ever written.....like Dylan level.
Blue Oyster Cult - Then Came The Last Days of May - A movie plot set to a drug deal gone wrong. It's like a Coen Brothers movie - should be turned into a film.
Joy Division - Decades & The Eternal
Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Revolution Blues - Like the horror song version of OUATIH
Peter Laughner - Ain't It Fun

The Velvet Underground, Rolling Stones, Husker Du and Joy Division songs are really great mentions. I’ll list a bunch more in no particular order other than me just scrolling down my Spotify and picking stuff out
Polly - Nirvana Jeremy - Pearl Jam The End - The Doors Horse Latitudes - The Doors Pretty much the entirety of Pink Floyd’s The Wall One of These Days - Pink Floyd Careful with that Axe Eugene - Pink Floyd When the Levee Breaks - Led Zeppelin Ventilator Blues - The Rolling Stones Reuters - Wire Theme - Public Image Ltd Swan Lake/Death Disco - Public Image Ltd
Thought about mentioning a few Misfits songs but I figured that’s kinda cheating considering they’re horror punk and all. Some Cramps too

Pink Floyd - Careful With that Axe, Eugene. Roger Waters' screams are inhuman.
Gravediggaz - Diary of a Madman.

One of the best rap song of all time just can't be missing from a thread like this. Lyrically one of the most terrifying songs I've heard and what makes it really special is also how real and grounded it sounds. Another one is this song from Rotting Christ, arguably the best black metal song ever, which is terryfing both musically (it creates a haunting, bone-chilling atmosphere) and lyrically, if you read between the lines.

I still remember the first time I heard this- the first time I'd ever been scared of a song lol.

The Pretenders Tattooed Love Boys (1980)
A song essntially describing a gang rape of Chrissie Hynde - irl - that never once forgives herself, her attackers, the police (not even mentioned, and not an option) - Hynde has said she was "guilty" of bringing the attack on herself and what's scary about the song is how much it's a song of "reporting the facts" and celebrating that she's alive to tell the story in the first place.......hard to find any parallel to this subject matter and approach before this was written.

Look, there's people on this board who know music, and people on this board who dabble in music .......and there's bands in the world who do that too........then there's bands like Big Black who dived head first into the void and turned this song, the opener on their first album that turned this song into a existential howl of anguish.
Ever read the lyrics sheet.........yeah........don't

Hank Wood and The Hammerheads You Could Have ItI heard this song a few yars ago but forgot it until I was in a record store this week and heard it blasting and I was like damn that's a frightening Rock and Roll record - apparently it's been re-released in 2022 .....this band has a schtick they do as a wild garage act and usually I can just blow right by it, no big deal, cool noise, whatever.......but THIS is one of those rare songs like Iggy's "I Got A Right", Dead Boys "Sonic Reducer", the Rollins version of Black Flag's of "Gimmie, Gimmie, Gimmie", Fear's "I Don't Care About You" or The Humpers "Murder City Revolution" etc........where the singer sounds so completely off the rails that you think he may be having or cause you to have a heart attack....or a stroke....to commit or be the victim of a murder...... Screaming F-You! You Could Have It! over and over again - it's 2:28 of a deranged kind of Anti-Art Trash......the fact that this could even been made at all in 2018 or 2019 as opposed to 1977 (and re-released in 2022) is shocking, awful, scary, with no concession to commercial potential, good taste or subtlety at all .........um.....possibly the greatest Rock and Roll song of all time

I am currently listening to The Rite of Spring, and it is a constant barrage of suspense, keeping you on the edge of your seat, building up to a release that hasn't happened for the past half hour. It is deliciously uneasy and strange. It even gave me a jump scare, literally making me yell in fright!

"You... are that!" Edit: Pacman already posted this lol. That all-timer song has a lyric in it that would never - ever - be uttered by any mainstream female Rock star in 2023 - it is not only a terrifying song, it's one of the most honest, journalistic and truly feminist ones too - and I don't mean "nice feminist" where you can talk about the patriarchy in an academic way and pretend you are an ally with females because you're sensitive or some bullshit...... An example of a truly unique, horrible, uncompromising point (of view) that could only be made by a raging Rock band - if you wrote it down and read it in a book, it wouldn't seem the same, if you filmed the song it would seem manipulative, if you painted it, it would be less complicated, brutal and vivid........it can only be sung, pour out of her - in the exact manner it is sung in, within the specific musical medium - Punk Rock (it is that!) - that it is sung in......it's just perfect in concept, performance and impact. People may roll their eyes and say I "over-think" songs ..........I'mmina say you can't possibly "overthinK" that song tbh......... I shot my mouth off and he showed me what that hole was for.
