Heatmiser (Elliott Smith) Plainclothes ManThis song from 1996 is 2/3 John Lennon, 1/3 McCartney and is a better song than anything McCartney has written.....in .....um.....let's just say a very long time.....

Shivvers Teenline (1980)
There is no band in the recent era - in this genre anyway - who has been revived like this one - they never made a proper album - and if you look them up they now are wildly cited as an influence on the genre - though no one had really heard them until a record culled all their songs together a few years ago.
Sort of a sub-Blondie - but their best stuff stays in your head like Blondie for a couple of songs at least - they experienced being "found" in the same way The (original) Modern Lovers and Big Star did - though not as big or as important (or as good ffs)......they are great fun and I own this album even .....

Manfred Mann Pretty Flamingo (1966)
Highly offensive song about "the male gaze" (seriously, stop using this expression ffs), and extreme objectification, that is told from a patriarchal POV and is entirely heteronormative............. also offensive to flamingos. A crucial song in the genre ........in 1966 anyway......... when shockingly no one used any of those terms

The Professionals 1-2-3 (1980)
One of my favorite songs in this genre and featuring 2 of the 4 Sex Pistols (Steve Jones / Paul Cook)

The Boyfriends I Need Your Love (1978)
This song was covered by The Ramones in the early 80s - on album - think about that - The Ramones covered an in period song by a band no one really knew and that was a similar type band.......that's quite odd - and so is the song which is missing a bridge entirely ........and is the kind of song that totally should have a bridge ......

The Is This It of Power Pop - the greatest album in this specific genre......... in this century .......20th anniversary should just have the awesme collection Shattered added to it, but whatever - this is still a big deal.....20 years........fuck that's depressing
Legendary power-pop trailblazers The Exploding Hearts have announced an expanded and remastered reissue of their beloved sole studio album, Guitar Romantic, due May 26, 2023 via Third Man Records. A new mix of fan-favorite track “I’m A Pretender,” remixed in 2022 by since-departed erstwhile member “King” Louie Bankston, is available to stream now via all DSPs.

The Beards This GirlThis is what passed for an all-girl "supergroup" 20 (21 actually) years ago before boygenius went all OMG we're gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, are in relationships that are polysomething - which we used to just call "fncking a lot of different people" back in the day............with conflicted (ex?)Christianty (see the aforementiioned fncking), and bad poetry and went straight into #1 on the charts bitches.... The Beards had 2 "stars" back in 2002 - Lisa "Don't Call Me Johnny" Marr and Kim "I was in the Pixies briefly" Shattuck and they were, pretty ace - but they only got to make a brief LP - because even though they liked boys (mostly?), wrote a love song (about boys - ew) - that was still all the cis, heteronormative, Patriarchy would allow them to make. Now that story is more Power Pop than you can even make up .......always an Angel - never a God as they say....

Kurt Baker Anchors Up (2023)
This year has had disappointing new singles by interesting artists - Coach Party, Jeff Rosenstock, The Heat Inc. ...........but this is a good surprise:
Kurt Baker made 2 pretty great Power Pop records 10-ish years ago - Brand New Beat (2012) and the Rockin' For A Living EP (2011) - when no one else was really playing Power Pop at all - but after that he often sucked - sometimes embarrassingly so.......but this new song - a weird, slick piece of professionalism that sounds like Loverboy trying to sound like Cheap Trick playing Dad Rock is a total guilty pleasure Summer song - with his best buddy and frequent collaborator Geoff Palmer - who has had his ups (my #3 album of 2021) and downs (everything he then did in 2022) himself....

The Tourists So Good To Be Back Home Again (1980)What a marvelous song - Lennox & Stewart's pre-Eurythmics band - this is screaming to be covered ......just a joyous song.....how many Pop songs do you ever hear being joyous? Just sayin'......

One of the secrets of Rock music taste - Power Pop especially - is being able to disseminate your buried treasures from buried trash.......
The Partridge Family's "I Woke Up In Love This Morning" is great in a way that The Knack's more "legitimate" "Frustrated" can never hope to be - especially as Power Pop .......... which gets us to Luxury Sweets - great name btw - who were never particularly good really.............except for this song.........which they totally stole from the The Exploding Hearts formula - and which just proves Luxury Sweets knew who to steal from really........

A modern classic of the genre.........A gloriously cheesy video.......

Crash Street Kids - Little Girls (1982) - ~ 8 / 10Sort of like if The Replacements had only aspired to be The Records, and were nice guys who were also sober - this band were so far underground they were practically instantly buried.........Little Girls is maybe the best album from 80s Alternative Minnesota that's not by the Mats / Husker Du ..........one of those minor classic Power Pop albums like The Shivvers compiled LP or Wanna Meet The Scruffs? that separates people who like Power Pop............ from lunatics who obsess over it........ Begging to be reissued...... it has in the meantime found a whole other life on Youtube, streaming and CD-R.......... Full album link below the video btw:

Well this is an awesome surprise:........to a lot of people the 2 best pure Power Pop bands in the world - America's The Whiffs (I like 'em, but not that much) and England's The Speedways - (I love 'em, too much)........are sharing a bill this November - 7 nights in a row! ........ The Speedways have never been to America before.......what's next - quitting their day jobs? Hit singles? Selling out to the man?

Half Catholic Jaded (2023)
I posted this song because I just thought it was catchy ........but later I read the lyrics and this song has some amazing lyrics which almost never happens in this genre: I love how he says "Brutal Youth" which is a double meaning to his own youth and the Elvis Costello album........an example of being clever but not overtly cute - and the two time use of "glove compartment" which holds 2 things that can kill in entirely different ways .....and neither are gloves.......One of 2023's best songs: Took a right by the old apartment Cigarettes in the glove compartment Brutal Youth, it's a cold reminder I lost my love and I never found her
Could I have been so oblivious I was high as a kite couldn't keep me underground sh-sh-sh-shut me down
Summer days in abandoned buildings Lonely nights running from our feelings Got lost by the old apartment Loaded gun in the glove compartment
Could I have been so delirious I was down in the dumps for three straight months couldn't calibrate
I've been jaded Jaded over you
You got me feeling so down I try to tune it out
I make all the worst decisions when I'm alone I'm in need of supervision Well, I don't know

Piper Who's Your Boyfriend? (1977) This belongs to a weird subgenre in Power Pop history - with Van Halen's Jamie's Cryin' and Rainbow's Since You've Been Gone as obvious examples ...when hard rock bands play Power Pop: Billy Squier - not really a Power Pop guy much - cut this song with his 70s band - a full 4 years before he hit it big and he cut this song again in a lesser version solo too........this is the best version of this and it sort of sounds like Alex Chilton at first anyway if he wasn't being his usual brilliant / difficult self I mean.....

The Speedways - Triple Platinum (Compilation - 2023 / 2018-2023 Released Oct 27th, 2023) - 9 + / 10 - reviewed on vinyl
My favorite current band .........and yeah one of these days they're going to break my heart..........but not yet...........
A 12 song "Greatest Hits" ("Triple Platinum" yeah right) designed for people too stupid to have gotten the word yet - 4 songs from each of their 3 sensational albums - and the 4 songs from the 1 man band debut are re-done with the full 4 piece band now
************************
This is out today - streaming - on Youtube.......One of the best "best ofs" ever in this genre? All of their 3 original albums are worth buying but if you still don't get it and want to see what the big deal is........give it a listen on Youtube or somewhere else.......

Edit - ...........and today (Tuesday) they reconfigure their previous video for one of their greatest songs - "Just Another Regular Summer" in the full band, 2023 version now - still with a retro Brigitte Bardot - still not sure how they swerve copyrights for this ........maybe they don't.......but until they get sued........one of the best Power Pop songs of the MAR era.........in either version .........

Game Theory I've Tried Subtlety (1986)
How sad is the story of most Power Pop? Scott Miller wrote this song - Part Paul Westerberg, Part Peter Case, Part Alex Chilton - and he did that fairly often too........his reward for it? Consistently underselling albums - an erratic career arc and eventually a later suicide.
Game Theory could make a terrific, cherry picked box set that would make fans of 80s American indie lose their minds - the problem is actually picking their best stuff......this song is one of them and is always left-off.......their music is screaming to get used in a TV show or movie......and they get overlooked even all these years later by Power Pop fans......

Marc with a C Holly Vincent
In Power Pop the name Holly (Beth) Vincent is sacred - she should have been big........she made some great music but she flopped on a major label.......and then she kind of disappeared / reappeared in very obscure ways - THAT's the Power Pop trifecta...... if you call a song Holly Vincent it better be a good one..........

2023 End of Year Power Pop Wrap Up:
The Uniboys - Buy This Now - Really........ don't........... 6 + / 10
Geoff Palmer - An Otherwise Negative Situation - Not as good as he was on the excellent Charts & Graphs (2021) - 6.5 / 10
Kurt Baker - Rock N Roll Club - Meh.........has one really good song - Anchors Up - and Palmer wrote it ^ - Baker nowadays is a better sideman mostly (see below) 6 / 10
Brad Marino - Grin and Bear It - Very tuneful but random - and it has 3 covers so it seems minor - like his ex-band mate Palmer he was better in 2021 (Looking For Trouble) ~ 7 /10 .......
