Don't think we have just a general news thread for Oscar-related stuff, so I thought I'd make one instead of bumping the ceremony thread.

This is probably the best decision they've consciously made in years.

Not sure what "exploring extensions of the show on streaming" exactly means, but it's high time they made the ceremony available to live stream on their streaming service.
And lmao at only 2% approving of the fan favorite thing.

If so, his win is a cake walk Let's see if he lives up to the task first In other news, it just dawned on me that Cameron stole the title of the sequel from his ex: www.imdb.com/title/tt0210382/

I know this is a typo, but man, David Koechner as Todd Packer would've been a much better villain than Ribisi.

If the goal is to eliminate the chance of foreign and art house movies to be nominated, it's a good idea. Otherwise, it's dumb

A move clearly designed to kill any other "big heart" films.

Not only elitist, but kind of rings like the Academy stubbornly refusing to evolve. I don’t know about you guys, but in my circles, I’m starting to see theaters become more of a niche thing (aside from the odd blockbuster).

If this rule gets enacted, does this mean films like To Leslie cannot get nominated for Oscars?

I assume the Academy has more data on what films in recent years would be ineligible before moving forward with this decision*, but I'm not all that opposed to it. Seems to me to clearly be a way to get streamers to make at least a bit of a show of support to the theatrical model beyond just doing quick runs at NY and LA to skirt by on eligibility. I'd imagine the arthouse or foreign film that ultimately gets an Oscar nomination are those with enough distributor backing to have made it into at least 1 arthouse theater in most major markets. Perhaps 15-20 out of 50 is a bit much and they should start smaller, like 5-10.
*To Leslie has already been mentioned but I'm also thinking of Women Talking. That movie was never in more than 20 theaters throughout its entire theatrical run but with UA (a.k.a. MGM a.k.a. Amazon) behind it then it theoretically should've been able to make a bigger distribution push if necessary.

I'm assuming To Leslie still would have been eligible - check out the list of cities in which it screened from its social media (this is just a sampling, too): https://www.instagram.com/p/CjlN3ULDWET
