Interested in seeing how the legs turn out. It's a bit divisive so far.

Unless Saturday's numbers are particularly drop-heavy, 200m is happening.

Just read someone on AW mention this and thought it was pretty nutty: The first Fantastic Beasts and Dr. Strange opened in the same month, and the former did better worldwide. We're now looking at a situation where the domestic total for Fantastic Beasts 3 may be less than Dr. Strange 2's first day. It's also going to have a bigger opening weekend than every stand-alone Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America movie. Wild.

A bit frontloaded, and it might be because of more mixed WOM, which is not encouraging for legs down the road, but still good. The first Doctor Strange made about 232m during its entire theatrical run domestically, the sequels looks to do that total in two weeks alone, which is definitely WOW worthy.

Why is this doing so much better than things like Eternals, Shang-Chi, or Ant-Man? Looks like it's even going to outgross the last Thor. It's not like Dr. Strange has a huge cultural footprint like Spider-Man and I don't really think Cumberbatch is a draw.

Plus the high level that Marvel has set for themselves to begin with, probably means that their movies are just proned to open huge, especially when they feature big names. I would not surprised if the next Thor film, out opens Multiverse of Madness.

Strange got a huge popularity boost from Infinity War, Endgame and No Way Home and Marvel marketed this as the next big event in the MCU with some big cameos. Eternals suffered from mixed critical and audience reception while Shang-Chi and Ant-Man were newly introduced, lesser known heroes (not to mention SC had to contend with the Delta variant which massively lowered tracking, while AM was one of the most low-stakes MCU offerings).

I’d say all that’s been said before, plus the MCU’s gotten a greater profile since Ant-Man, and the pandemic has become MUCH less intrusive since Shang-Chi and Eternals. It took until No Way Home for things to really start getting back to normal. EDIT: I think there might be a WandaVision boost too
