Happy 20th anniversary to (still) the second-best Spider-Man movie to date after its immediate sequel (which I'd probably still rank in the top 3 superhero films ever made).
Helped spark the rise of the superhero genre as the most dominant force in Hollywood over the next two decades, changing the industry forever (for better or for worse... okayprobably definitely for worse). But unlike the majority of current Marvel films, this one exudes the personality of its director, balancing humor with real pathos, embracing a slightly cheesier, but earnest tone that still allows for tense action that is more exciting than most of what you see in recent MCU movies (seriously, rewatch the final fight scene with Green Goblin – it’s brutally intense and unlike anything you see in the MCU nowadays).
Still contains my favorite romance in a superhero film (Kirsten Dunst will always be MJ to me), that iconic kiss, it’s got memorable performances from supporting players like Dafoe and JK Simmons, an AMAZING score by Danny Elfman, and also one of the best final scenes in a superhero movie as well.
I’ll always have nostalgic affection for this film because I saw it when I was 12 years old, and it was, I think, one of the first PG-13 movies my parents allowed me to see in a theater (yes, my parents were strict). Up until that point, most of the action movies I watched were stuff like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and a lot of PG-rated stuff.
When I saw this in a theater, it immediately felt different to me. It was intense, visceral, and exciting in a way I had never really experienced before, and it was one of the first times I remember feeling genuinely thrilled in a movie theater. I vividly remember actually pumping my fist in the air in the theater and yelling “yeah!” like a total dork during scenes like when Peter runs down alley while changing into his wrestler-Spidey outfit and climbs the walls in rapid pursuit of Uncle Ben’s killer, and when he angrily resists Goblin during their fight at the end and finally overpowers him after getting the crap beaten out of him. When it came out on video, I bought the VHS and probably wore it out from watching the final fight scene so many times because I wanted to memorize the choreography and would act it out in my backyard.
Anyway..... thoughts on the OG Spider-Man?
