So here’s something I’ve never done before. In my 2021 Awards, I noted that I felt no real need to revisit 2020, and catch up on the films I’d missed. But feeling the itch to see what it had to offer, I eventually decided that I would go back and revisit it… and I don’t think it was worth it.
To be fair, I found a slate with decent films (admittedly by scanning consensus films), but I just wasn’t over the moon with this year. Then again, maybe that’s because going back triggered some very unpleasant memories from 2020 in general. That said, I did form some lineups I was quite happy with, after the roughly 80 films that were in play… with one exception.
There is one film I’ve excluded from any and all consideration: Hamilton. The reason being were I to include it, I wouldn’t be able to separate my love for the stage musical from the merits of the film as a film. So as much as it pains me (and let’s face it, we’ve already muddied the waters on what does and doesn’t count as a movie anymore), I’ve chosen to exclude it.
But even so, there were some good contenders to pick from. So even though I may not get originality points, and there were few films I was genuinely rapturously passionate about, I hope you enjoy them.
Now, with all of the preamble out of the way, here are the nominations for the retroactive 2020 MYeah Awards!
