'very dear to his heart'. Get ready for DDL and Adam Sandler in The Cobbler 2.

If it is him, who's the director? PTA? Spielberg? Jim Sheridan? Bennett Miller? Spike Jonze? Peter Jackson?

If it is him, who's the director? PTA? Spielberg? Jim Sheridan? Bennett Miller? Spike Jonze? Peter Jackson? The "very deal to his heart" makes me think it's something about Ireland. So maybe Sheridan? Sheridan's always been underrated as someone who could bring DDL out of retirement given the connection they had back in the day and that he actually "knows" him while Spielberg, Scorsese, and PTA really don't.

A 5 year retirement lmao. Maybe he should stop announcing it. It only makes him look really silly.

Until this starts shooting I'mmina stick with my usual ......."I'll believe it when I see it...........he ain't coming back, neither is your first girlfriend from when you were a pimply faced punk brat, it's humorous and sad to me that people want a guy who was great like 7 times - that's it - in his (yes, glorious) career so badly........ there are other fish in the sea ......and if anything is close to his "heart" (ha!).......I doubt it's the "very dear to his heart" project material ......... and is more likely the word "Oscarbait"

A 5 year retirement lmao. Maybe he should stop announcing it. It only makes him look really silly. C'mon....anyone with a lick of sense knew this "retirement " was never going to last . DDL is one of the most strategic actors alive in terms of how he manages his career. Even at the time, it felt like a move to give him a better chance to win another Oscar for Phantom Thread. He knows being an enigma that works sporadically makes him seem more special. If he didn't cultivate that and worked regularly, he'd basically be Christian Bale. DDL's legacy is going to be based on Oscars, because he isn't a "movie star" or someone that has penetrated popular culture enough that general audiences care much for if he isn't around (which isn't to say he isn't seen as a God with cinephiles, critics and within the film industry). I suspect his ultimate goal is to be the only man ever to win 4 Best Actor Oscars, and with how strategic he is, he might just do it. Great actors that work regularly get taken for granted. DDL has managed to game the system to make sure he's never taken for granted.

Yeah the whole thing makes him look like a juvenile attention seeker. LOL. There’s literally no confirmation that this rumor is even true or that it’s even referring to DDL. Let’s maybe relax a little.

DDL potentially coming out of retirement? Imagine that..
Well if it is true, his retirement lasted longer than Tom Brady's 40 day sabbatical. Michael Jordan gave it a good 18 months playing baseball the first retirement. Christian Bale's Batman had been retired by the time The Dark Knight Rises occurs for a few years before Bane brought him out. Hackman stayed true to this word I guess.

Who would y'all be most excited to see come back for one last triumph? As cool as it'd be to have DDL back again, I feel like Phantom Thread was a fitting closer. Might just be because it's his birthday, but right now I'd be most hyped to see Jack Nicholson one last time.

Might just be because it's his birthday, but right now I'd be most hyped to see Jack Nicholson one last time. Warning: Lots of GOAT talk below...... Yeah, it's almost an impossibly perfect closer to emulate - it's hard to imagine a better farewell than Phantom Thread - because not only did he do what he hadn't (for me) done before - he was funny in a more overt way - a big plus and a major hole in his resume imo that he went a long way towards minmizing .........and it had elements of himself in the performance which was so key (ie seeing his mother's ghost like with his Hamlet on stage breakdown "seeing" his father and things like that........the "Never Cursed" label etc. as well........there are quirks there that lend itself to a "final role")........it is one of the great farewell performances ever..........and crucially the performance seems "mythic" which is a big thing about him anyway - I said this before - his 3 BA wins (and BA is a big deal because that specific record may go decades for men without being touched), the way he went about what he actually did, while simultaneously getting credit for roles he didn't actually do (all actors get that - it's ridiculous - but he gets it to a high degree because of how he was overall imo). But Nicholson is the great "one that got away" of retirees to me - Gene Hackman is a great actor but he did everything he could do imo - I'm not sure his legacy for me could go higher........but Nicholson is a different story he's a GOAT in a way Hackman isn't imo - and Nicholson could have gone higher: First, he stopped at fairly young age - 73............and the guys he goes up against as the American GOAT - DePac - have had some big successes in the 12 years he's been away: De Niro got an Oscar nod, an Emmy nod, toplined a 10 nomination film w/ The Irishman, has KoTFM pending with a possible nod / win?............ Pacino got a Tony nod, two Emmy nods (a win), an Oscar nod, and OUATIH etc., several GG nods, and big movies etc - both seem so much more active once Jack retired when in 00-10 decade they were marginalized (or marginalized themselves) compared to him..... Also, there were little signs that Nicholson would have been pissed off enough to come back and do one last "big thing" too - Pacino playing Hoffa - one of his favorite roles ..........and Anjelica Huston's ridiculous putdown of De Niro (and to a lesser extent Pacino) sounded like she was (maybe?) speaking Jack's actual words for him (just doing it like a bitch - love her, but she was a bitch). Day-Lewis retirement and Hackman's made sense to me ............Nicholson's just never did .........I can't believe he never came back tbh.......would love to see him do it......

Kind of piggybacking off of Mike’s post, who do we think this actor could be if it’s not DDL? Not who we’d be most excited to see come back from retirement, but who could this rumor most likely be about if not DDL? We all immediately assumed it was DDL but let’s take a step back and consider who else it could be referring to
