PALME: Loveless GRAND PRIX: Happy End JURY: 120 BPM DIRECTOR: Haynes, Wonderstruck ACTOR: Nagase, Hikari ACTRESS: Kidman, Killing of a Sacred Deer SCREENPLAY: The Square
Zyvaginstev has very strong Cannes history (screenplay win for Levithian, The Banishment played in comp, Elena won UCR) Loveless has strong early buzz and from the premise it seems like it'll have the necessary social heft that usually wins the big prize
Haneke is one of the most acclaimed directors in the world, and while a 3rd Palme seems unlikely, his respect and the social concept of Happy End should keep him in contention elsewhere
120 BPM could end up being the biggest hit at the festival and on paper, makes sense as a huge player, but Campillo is relatively young and this is his first Cannes entry as director and 3rd film in total
Haynes is well-respected and has strong Cannes history, and while Wonderstruck is probably too "slight" to take Palme, the movie should play very well to the jury that consists of Almodovar, Chastain, Maren Ade, Will Smith, and the direction is flashy
Actor is an extremely tough call-- Phoenix, Hoffman, Reiner are all possibilities-- but I'll stick with Nagase since he's an actor that's been around and worked with likes of Jarmusch and this could be an emotional role, and Kawase has strong history with Cannes even if a lot of her films have been mixed (won Grand Jury in 07)
Kidman feels almost like TOO safe a choice-- she's having a comeback with Lion and Big Little Lies that re-asserted her claim as one of the best living actresses for many, will have a busy festival with Sacred Deer, Beguiled, Top of Lake, How To Talk To Girls, and has never won before-- Sacred Deer has strong buzz and was finished just in time
Lastly, buzz on The Square is very good and the plot sounds like it will slay Cannes, it was a late-entry, and Ostlund won UCR with Force Majeure

Yeah I hope Kidman snags the best actress trophy, but The Jury's pick is often out of box in this category. I'm not sure about wonderstuck... It could go either way, but he's had 3 films at Cannes and 2 of them won a prize (Artistic Contribution for Velvet Underground, and Actress for Carol) Almodovar is a huge fan of Haynes and both share very similar sensibilities, and since it is his most accessible film yet (emotional crowdpleaser and homage to silent film) it could play good to the jury

Nice! I was going to make this thread when the official selection was complete for sure, since there could still be some changes. But this is what I have for now:
Palme d'Or: Wonderstruck Grand Prix: 120 Beats Per Minute Jury Prize: L'Amant Double Best Director: Bong Joon-Ho (Okja) Best Actor: Jean-Louis Trintignant (Happy End) Best Actress: Vasilina Makovtseva (A Gentle Creature) Best Screenplay: Ruben Östlund (The Square)

Okja is a huge question mark for me, I'm interested in the reception Basically I think it may appeal to this jury and looks like a director's showcase. But another strong reason is that with two films in competition from South Korean directors, and Park himself as a juror, I think one of the South Koreans has to win something.

I always say it's tough to determine these sorts of things without knowing the makeup of the jury, but last year was such a clusterfuck in terms of predictions. I will say, though, that I have a feeling Ramsay is a potential for Best Director. The ultraviolent fare at Cannes tends to wind up here if it's praised (Drive, Heli) and I can see someone like Chastain being a vocal supporter of a female entrant in this category.

Might as well go for broke:
Palme d'Or: Loveless Grand Prix: The Killing of a Sacred Deer Jury Prize: Happy End Best Director: Lynne Ramsay, You Were Never Really Here Best Actor: Masatoshi Nagase, Radiance (would totally pick Lindon if he hadn't won two years ago, though) Best Actress: It'd be hard to bet against Kidman, considering her plethora, but that hasn't really helped in the past with the likes of Cotillard. I'm actually gonna throw caution to the wind and think that the jury will pull a Volver and recognized all the ladies for The Beguiled in one single sweep. Best Screenplay: The Square Vulcan Award: Wonderstruck's cinematography.

Palme d'Or: I'm gonna go with Loveless. Zvyagintsev is a festival darling, what with Leviathan winning Best Screenplay and The Return the Golden Lion. Plus, the subject matter seems like something Almovodar could resonate with. Grand Prize of the Jury: Happy End, because it's topical and Huppert is more popular than ever, and it's on its home turf. Had Haneke not won twice, I'd call him the frontrunner. Jury Prize: The Beguiled. Chastain will probably want a female director to win something, even if it's not the Best Director prize itself. Best Director: Todd Haynes, Wonderstruck. It seems more fitting to give it a technical achievement. Best Actor: Majd Asmi, Jupiter's Moon. Another refugee movie, one after Le Pen's defeat at that. Best Actress: Emma Thompson, The Meyerowitz Stories. It could double as a career award. Best Screenplay: The Square and/or A Gentle Creature. Two and a half hours = lots of dialogue.
Un Certain Regard: After the War, picked randomly Queer Palm: 120 Beats Per Minute Vulcan Award: VFX, Okja Golden Eye: Napalm

People are saying Will Smith will vouch for Okja and Good Time just because he probably wouldn't like anything else.
But hey, maybe he'll take a likening to Naomi Kawase. You never know.

I may shift one of my prizes to accommodate, as I feel there may be some passion for Okja on the jury. Especially since juror Park was a producer for Bong's Snowpiercer, so they must get along. I have a feeling this strong South Korean presence will translate to some award recognition.

Mostly parroting other people's insights. Palme d'Or: Loveless. Basing this on the premise (sounds hefty and emotionally charged enough to win the big one) and the success of Zvyagintsev's previous work.
Grand Prix: Happy End. Extremely topical subject matter, Haneke is a Cannes favorite, Huppert is as popular as ever, and having one of her buddies on the jury won't hurt either.
Jury Prize: Okja. The Park connection will probably be of great help here, and the Netflix controversy might be another boost if they feel like making a statement.
Best Director: fuck it, I'm going with a tie: Todd Haynes, Wonderstruck (looks like a juicy directorial showcase that's bound to play well to several members of that jury) and Lynne Ramsay, You Were Never Really Here (like Stephen said, this is where hyperviolent fare gets its due, and I can see Chastain pushing hard for one of the female directors to win one of the top categories). We've just had 3 consecutive years with ties in the main competition, so it's not out of the realm of possibility.
Best Actor: no idea, really. I'm cheating off of you guys and going with Masatoshi Nagase, Radiance.
Best Actress: again, a shot in the dark. Vasilina Makovtseva, A Gentle Creature. Plotline makes it sound like a real showcase for its lead.
Best Screenplay: The Square. Seems like the right place to throw a bone to what sounds like a very script-driven project.
It feels wrong to leave 120 Beats per Minute out, but I'm not sure what to replace. Maybe that wins the Palme and Loveless gets Best Actor?

Or Trintignant could get Best Actor and BPM win the Grand Prix instead.

The only movie I'm positive will win something is 120 BPM
The Square has high buzz so it would be weird for Ostlund to leave with nothing and it seems like something this jury will more or less enjoy but not love, but it still sounds too odd to be fully embraced, so what does it take as a consolation-- screenplay, Prix, director
Wonderstruck, Okja, Redoubtable, Meyerowitz Stories all seem like films this jury will enjoy the most as whole, but they're somewhat admittedly slight and not big overall contenders so what they can reasonably get Wonderstruck- Director, Jury, or Actress (longshot, probably) Okja- Director, Jury Redoubtable- like, Actor only (maybe screenplay) Meyerowitz- only actor
Beguiled played well, and could be a strong dark horse: with big fest, Farrell and Kidman can contend for acting, while Coppola herself could be rewarded with a prize-- with this jury, I feel like they'd want to make a statement with her (Director is where dark fare is usually rewarded)
Happy End, Loveless, Sacred Deer are all from Cannes favorites and have received their fair share of acclaim and supporters, but they all seem relentlessly dark--- films that Will Smith will hate and Sorrentino, Chastain, and Maren Ade might be mixed on but still respect
So, perhaps something like
PALME: 120 BPM JURY: Okja PRIX: Loveless DIRECTOR: Coppola ACTOR: Pattinson ACTRESS: Kidman (Sacred Deer) SCREENPLAY: The Square
That leaves Haneke with nothing which seems weird, but I'm sure what he can manage for a lesser film in a rather competitive field
Plus, the Ozon hasnt screened yet which has big buzz
