Me one hour in: "Cool, this is Se7en with Batman." Me two hours in: " Oh, this is Heavy Rain with Batman." Ooof, what didn't you like about it? What makes you think he didn't like it??

What makes you think he didn't like it?? He's... not a fan of Heavy Rain. You can check the Video Games board. For clarity's sake on this, I did like the film but I do think it is strongest when it is dealing with the detective aspect of things in the first hour, and when the film spends a solid 45 minutes veering away from the Riddler to deal with the Falcone/Selina Kyle stuff, it's good but it feels tonally at odds with the Riddler storyline, and I think it got to a pretty hilarious point when, after the Falcone storyline is done, all of a sudden it's all "Oh right, the Riddler is still out there, we should probably deal with that." And it didn't help that Pattinson was giving me Norman vibes from Heavy Rain the whole time, only subbing out his fantastic sunglasses for pretty sweet contact lenses. And I should also point out that Heavy Rain is ridiculous but I still have a soft spot for it, in much the same way as I love Money Plane.

Also, I'm kinda disappointed in the Keoghan reveal because, knowing that they were saying he was playing Officer Stanley Merkel (to combat the supposed leaks, I guess?), I had concocted an amazing storyline in my head that was essentially Training Day in Gotham, where we had Merkel's first day on the GCPD, and he was being taken under Gordon's wing. And throughout the film, he would seem to be a truly incorruptible cop that Gordon would rely on and see as the future of law enforcement, free of all corruption. He would be the cop that Gordon would wind up relying on to make sure the Riddler was kept under lock and key while he dealt with the flooding of the city. And then when the dust settles, they find the Riddler is missing. And when they go to check on Merkel, they find a dead body in his apartment: the real Merkel. And that the whole time, we were following the Joker and nobody was the wiser.

I liked this. Not quite The Dark Knight but up there with Batman Returns and Joker on the next tier of Batverse movies, those all have different strengths so I'm not sure which I'd put second. Pattinson absolutely delivered and the haters at the announcement have to eat crow. Probably the best Batman I've ever seen on scree, I'd still take Keaton as Bruce Wayne and overall. And I do think it falls into a bit of a problem you had with the Nolan films where Bruce just feels mopey and isn't credible as being dangerous and crazy (a bit of a shame since Pattinson feels so much that way when he's actually playing Batman) and just in general doesn't get enough screentime. Farrell was probably the highlight of the supporting cast for me. Kravitz was fine as Catwoman, she has nothing on Pfeiffer obviously, probably similar to Hathaway, although she has better chemistry with Pattinson than she had with Bale which is important. A bit disappointed with Dano, just doesn't get a whole lot of screentime and I'm not sure why so many are saying he deserves a nod. One big strength is this has some of the best superhero action I've ever seen. The car chase is fantastic and I liked the fist fight choreography. The smooth martial arts stuff we've seen in other Batman movies may make more sense for the character and be a more efficient way to fight, but watching him slap thugs around like a crazy bare knuckle brawler of Jack Dempsey was so satisfying. Also really liked the atmosphere, it was a lot more stylized than I thought, the trailers made it look like it had a "generic real world feel" like the Nolan movies. A few thoughts on the ending and potential for the sequel-
There are so many characters here you have to guess at who is coming back. Presumably Dano and then adding The Joker with how he's teased at the end. Which likely means no Kravitz or any of the other villains. I always want to see a multi film Catwoman arc so I would have liked seeing Kravitz back and I would have made Farrell's Penguin the main villain of the next film since I liked him so much. We've had so much of the Joker lately they can give it a little break. Although I have to admit if it had been Phoenix in the cell at the end and if they'd kept it from getting leaked that would have been epic, although it would have needed to be the 80's setting as originally reported and not contemporary. But we'll just see who comes back in the sequel.

Didn't like it at all. I just think the script sucked, so it ended up being this plodding, generic/derivative soup with poor character and narrative development. The car chase is goddamn glorious though. French Connection meets We Own the Night meets Fury Road meets Prisoners (Gyllenhaal racing to the hospital) in its technical exuberance. If the whole movie was that inspired, lord...but Reeves has proven time and time again to be a piss poor conceptualizer; he can't think a movie through, he can only grab discrete elements of other films and try to mash them into a Frankenstein's monster, with some technical panache. If a cinematic savant like Tarantino was inspired by Se7en or whatever, he'd go deeper - be more visceral, provide more clarity or energy than even the inspiration - Reeves presents an etherized muddle.

I kind of want this to get an editing nomination. This did not feel three hours long to me.
More thought to come soon.

Uh…
I think Mikey G’s main theme may be my favorite Batman theme… ever. Yeah, even better than Elfman’s. Those four escalating notes haven’t left my head.

Personal bias aside from me not liking the movie, I felt like audience members were impatiently leaving (to the bathroom or concessions) and returning at my screening constantly. I've rarely seen a screening that restless. I actually checked my phone for the time at one point, which I never do, and it was 2 hours in and I was shocked as I thought the movie would be wrapping up soon.

That’s interesting, but I can understand that. Even for movies I like, after a while, I can feel the length and get a little impatient a lot of the time (I remember getting restless during Tragedy of Macbeth). I don’t know though. I hardly noticed it, and the deliberate pace was doing it for me. I think what finally made me realize the length was Keoghan’s Joker. That felt superfluous. Otherwise though, this honestly felt shorter than The Dark Knight to me.

To my surprise, I completely dug the hell out of this. First hour is legitimately excellent and I thought R-Pattz did exceptionally well outside of that weird scene with Alfred in the hospital. His big scene with Dano was simply a joy to watch. The whole conspiracy/catwoman plot thread was dumb and the Barry Keoghan reveal really took me out of it but I can't complain too much. Villain performances are uniformly on point too.
Quite easily the best capeshit flick since TDK.

Watched it a 2nd time. Three hours just flew away. The whole Gotham corruption racket was much more clearer this time. That said Reeves should've tightened the grips on the Falcone subplot which took a healthy amount of runtime and kept the Riddler away for some time. Still pretty elated that we got a modern day noir about Batman solving puzzles and investigating crimes with proper visuals.
Specials props to Michael Giacchino's haunting score. Feels both classical and modern at the same time.

Enjoyed it a lot. I loved the Batman detective stuff and as everyone's said that car chase was something special. I think the film should've ended with the Hope speech as well. Everything after that felt extraneous. Should've left that Arkham scene for after the credits. 8/10

Seen it twice now and I think it's really quite teriffic. The world building is great, loved the detective stuff and the car chase is masterful. It's often visually stunning as well and the camerwork is generally fantastic. Third act drags a bit to start with but it really got going and it came together great at the end I thought (even though there might have been one seen I would have cut).

(even though there might have been one seen I would have cut). I’ve seen it twice, going back for a third time this weekend, but yeah. I would cut that same scene out. There are OTHER villains in this universe. We don’t need another goddamn variation of the Joker to keep us hooked. Just use another goddamn character.

Runtime is excruciating, but there were enough kino caped crusader moments for me to enjoy this overall.
For a while I was thinking "I wish Fincher himself made a fucking Batman movie instead of some hack aping the absolute hell out of half his filmography" but as it went along I started to appreciate the Fincher-ness of it all instead of bitching about it. And I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority about this, but I think the last 45 minutes or so were easily the peak of the movie. Everything from Batman "arresting" Falcone on had the stakes that the first two hours were kind of lacking.
though they need to have someone re-write the dialogue for the next installment.... laughed out loud at probably half a dozen of the cliché lines (and there were many more than that) they had the characters spouting out.
Thought Pattinson was rock solid tbh... though he didn't have too much to work with for Bruce Wayne. Farrell is probably MVP even though they pretty much only tease the character here. Kravitz was pretty good. Sorry to say it... but Wright, Dano, and especially Turturro were pretty terrible.

Paul Dano's character has to be one of the most annoying in cinematic history.

Good movie but I hated the line “You know what they say, one minute you are in top of the world the next you are a clown” Nobody says that you guys just wanted to shoe horn the word clown into the movie.

I won't lie, I had the exact thought and was really hoping that Dano would turn around and go, "Wait... what? No one says that."
