How about he remakes The Revenant with DiCaprio and Gosling?

Or better yet remake The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly with Ryan Gosling playing all three parts.

As a tribute to David Lean, title it Ryan Gosling's Daughter.

There's a new Variety Q&A video with Spielberg and his Fabelmans team and at the end of that he says "We have to do a western" and then jokes about doing it without horses with everyone just chasing each other on foot His producing partner Kristie Macosko Krieger seems enthusiastic about doing a western too. Spielberg also says he's having trouble finding his next project which is interesting considering the recent Bullitt news. Please, Movie Gods, make the western happen! The video's here btw: variety.com/2022/film/news/steven-spielberg-fabelmans-production-team-1235465107/

Honestly, watching The Fabelmans, it staggered me that he hasn't done a Western. He's played around with some of the imagery (most notably Indiana Jones), but I'd love him to do a full-bore Western epic.

I doubt an old school Western would be making much money in the cinema these days ... if it bombs again it would be his third box office bomb in a row. Not that it matters much for him but it's certainly not a good look.

Nah, you just gotta cast it right. Gotta get Leo in there. Gotta throw Gosling a bone. Gotta get Denzel in there. Consider putting in Zendaya. Florence Pugh. Make up with Tom Cruise and get him in there. etc.

Agree with the above poster. Spielberg is not a big draw anymore. He needs some padding. Get Leo or someone big to star in it and throw some it girls and boys to get attention from the younger demographic.

Theaters also aren’t the huge draw they used to be. Exceptions aside, my local cinema has honestly become more of a niche thing, where weekends with smaller releases draw more community-level crowds, and it’s the ultra-hyped titles that draw in the tourists. Honestly, for companies that can afford it, I don’t think there’s any shame in releasing the movie, and biting the bullet until it draws more return on investment on the home market. It’s a different time we live in now.

I'm sitting here thinking of Western novels I have read and trying to decide which would be a good fit for Spielberg. I don't think Blood Meridian fits in his wheelhouse at all.
Maybe something like Michael Punke's Ridgeline. Punke wrote the novel that The Revenant is based on, and I feel like Ridgeline fits Spielberg's milieu rather well. It would also be a fascinating complement to Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon.

It's amazing that none of the 70s guys - Coppola, Scorsese, Spielberg, Lucas, DePalma, etc did a traditional Western......at one time Coppola was attached to Unforgiven

I had no idea Coppola had the rights to Unforgiven first, in the 80s? I could see it with Duvall/James Earl Jones. More never-westerned big names launched outta the 70s - Carpenter who used Rio Bravo as a template for most of his movies! and Ridley Scott who said recently he's dying to try the genre. Next generation made sure not to forget to put on their spurs! Coens, QT, Jarmusch, Raimi etc

Not that Spiel would do a Black List script but one of the highest voted for 2022 is a Western called Weary Ride the Belmonts.... plots the old aged gunslinger back at it business... script could be good....
