(Sorry if this is in the wrong section!)
This is kinda old news now, but what do y’all think about people cancelling Spotify after Neil Young and Joni Mitchell pulled their music from Spotify because Joe Rogan has a platform on there.
Personally, I’m conflicted as is always the case with de-platforming. Free speech is very important, but the danger of misinformation is also important. It’s a fine line.
I do think the outrage over Spotify platforming Rogan (a complete fucking idiot) is largely performative as is boycotting them. Where was this when they first offered him the contract? And are these #BoycottSpotify people gonna boycott YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter because he’s active on those platforms as well. If they’re THAT serious about misinformation, the logical step is to ban him from having a platform, but we know that’s censorship. And they don’t have the guts to come out and say that.
Also, Neil Young et al should’ve pulled their music from Spotify over their abysmal compensation of artists. It’s exploitative. But nope, complete silence over that. And Young completely undercut his cause when he moved his music to fucking AMAZON. Amazon is 100x worse than Rogan and Spotify

Joe Rogan is an idiot who panders to disaffected dudes and I don't care if he's being de-platformed (not that it really accomplishes anything beyond making his day a bit harder), but Spotify is never the good guy. Rogan's been wracking up millions of listens and driving up Spotify revenue without the company ever batting an eye. Whatever they do is for the bottom line only, whether that be de-platforming conspiracy theorists or exploiting underpaid artists ( or pumping millions into AI weapon development). They suck.

* I don't think Rogan is an idiot at all, and don't see any problem with him (like literally no problem - none). Or at least don't see a problem that that the marketplace won't solve.
* I don't think Neil Young (or anyone else) - is obligated to feel anything about "compensation of artists" (who aren't Neil Young) - not his problem.
* I don't think Neil Young (Joni Mitchell, or anybody else) should have to have their music on a platform they don't want - he's welcome to leave - don't let the door hit you in the ass.
* Spotify is a private company they - are not obligated to keep Joe Rogan - they can do whatever they want to also. If they fire him, don't let the door hit you in the ass either Joe.
* If they kick him off he will be like Megyn Kelly (also, not an idiot btw) who will take his many, many, many millions of dollars - which she earned btw, like Joe Rogan has - because someone was willing to pay - and go somewhere else for someone else who will be smart enough to make millions of dollars with Joe Rogan.
Let the free markets be free markets.....

Don’t disagree with a lot of the sentiments expressed in this thread. While the artists do have the right to pull their music in protest, a lot of it does seem very performative, and the artist compensation is a bigger issue. However I will add that I’m willing to bet large sums of money that 90% of the people trying to cancel Joe rogan are white people who don’t even listen to his show

I have no idea who Joe Rogan is until now.
Im 42 and Neil Young and Joni Mitchel are singers for my much older cousins. SNIPSTER COUSINS.
So I have no idea, I never take seriously Joni Mitchel or Neil Young, and much less now that are almost senil and curmudgeon.
I dont care about Rogen or about Spotify. I prefer Pandora
