Great opening. Scream 4 made 38M total. Nothing new the next 2 weeks either so it should have decent legs.

Good for Scream 5. A bit frontloaded, and I'd like to have seen it beat Scream 4's entire gross over the weekend, but still given the circumstances, it's solid.

Matthew Lillard said fuck this I’m going for mine. This is the last act, I’m a psychopathic serial killer in this film and I just killed a bunch of people. I’m dialing this shit up to 11 on the over-the-top scale and it makes sense in the film. Perfect..even Skeet Ulrich in one shot at his face before he stabs him is looking at him like this dudes nuts.

I think it should’ve gotten nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress (Cox). Just a classic horror slasher film that breathed new life into the genre.

Dude was robbed of a Supporting Actor nomination. He was great maybe even nomination worthy in SLC Punk!, She’s All That, and Scooby-Doo too. I guess he’s doing okay, but I guess I’m surprised that he was so big there for a few years and then disappeared given how talented he was. (I know he steadily worked since then, but he went to blockbusters to doing procedurals and what not. I don’t know maybe it was a personal choice given how much goes into staying at the top.)

Scream was a phenomenon, didn’t Lillard, Ulrich, and Arquette make the Vanity Fair cover for the next generation of actors issue the following year?

Scream is actually one of my favorite box office runs ever. It didn't even open that particularly great, only #4, but it kept growing and growing, until it pulled itself over 100m. That was a phenomenon type of run. Next year Scream 2 broke the December record, only to be bested by Titanic's second weekend two weeks later.

The Ringer did an excellent Oral History on the original Scream and the behind the scenes stuff it took to bring it to film. What I didn't know that it took some convincing for Craven to take the directors' chair because I imagine he was burnt out on the Horror genre by that point in his career. Very interesting with interviews from the cast and crew of the film. open.spotify.com/episode/4FrzYth0JFzu9jc5ku3w6E

Scream was really front-loaded, still a very good result given the pandemic. Also Licorice Pizza has been holding up really nice, it's already at 10 million, making it one of the better adult drama stories of the year.

Wasn't particularly fond of the new Scream, but it's nice to see something other than Marvel/DC/Disney turn a profit at the b.o.

I'm fascinated by how this movie plays going forward - it's budget was 40 million and it's total atm w/ global is ~ 14 million. At some point this is going to hit a wall but I'm not sure when ......Oscar nods would help but I'm curious how much because you feel that people who've already seen it know that's part of the equation. MGM keeps waiting out COVID and it either a great patient strategy or it's going to run out of room ........still in the top 10 though - 9th this weekend Licorice Pizza (2021)
Theatrical Performance
Domestic Box Office $9,566,347 International Box Office $4,225,732
Worldwide Box Office $13,792,079

Worldwide Box Office $13,792,079 It really depends on how far they expand it, it's still technically in limited release. The thing about PTA's movies is, is it that they usually expand really well, but collapse rather fast after. LP in specific, has been playing rather well to its audience. I guess it depends on how much MGM thinks they can get out of the film, and how far they'll go with it. Not even sure the awards will help it much in that regard, though.

That's actually pretty good for LP. I think Belfast topped out at approx 7 mil and that's considered the frontrunner.

For a horror franchise that's 25 years old being released during the middle of January, that's pretty fantastic.

That's actually pretty good for LP. I think Belfast topped out at approx 7 mil and that's considered the frontrunner. It looks that way atm but maybe not.......if Belfast wins BP (which I don't think it will, but it could......) LP cost significantly more to produce than Belfast - 15 million more for relatively small budget movies. Just 25 million for Belfast - but 40 million for LP..... Belfast tanked in the US but it is counting on winning BP which it might and which LP really can not imo but LP is counting on no alternative film at the box office and overperforming at the Oscars. Belfast hasn't played anywhere outside of the US / Canada yet afaik (?) - but goes wider internationally this weekend ...........so they think they have a lower bar to clear as they roll that movie out - for them it all comes down to the Oscar nods and opening dates not just US..............where LP isn't "as likely" to get as many or as impactful an uptick from those........but it "might" if it gets a lot of nods........LP just started going global ....... Both are playing the long game but not exactly on the same field though......

Am I the only one who actually thought Ulrich was better than Lillard?? Yup........... Ulrich is better and a better character much better actually and more complex - first of all he gets the classic line (Fnck you ...........we've already played that game, and you lost......remember?) - one of the best burns in modern movies. He's also far sadder because he shows you flashes of sensitivity and well roundedness that is all an act - he "could be normal" but is quite literally a bad seed or a psychologically damaged bad seed.............. that he then twists back on the characters in many sly ways (and line readings)..........Lillard is just nuts , Ulrich is covincingly and disturbingly sociopathic. Btw, I wrote about Wes Craven (link below, page 1, worth a read imo) and once in a way that kind of covers why if you are talking about the actors in the first place in a Wes Craven movie - you're misrepresenting the movie somewhat (at least prior to Red Eye) - all the Craven movies usually would work regardless of the cast really - even if you gave a great performance IN a Craven movie - you are always subject to him and his laid out vision. Lillard is not a worthy BSA for Scream imo - I mean I'm as big a contarian as anyone but no - I can name a lot of people more deserving than him - but Wes Craven is actually deserving of a BD nod. That's the case in both of his greatest works - Nightmare on Elm Street & Scream. He's America's Dario Argento - a great director who stayed in one type of film (almost) exclusively that limited the way in which he's perceived by people too stupid to look at him as a master of genre only - he was that and more at his best. movie-awards-redux.freeforums.net/thread/12705/great-directors-impact-on-genre
