RIP to one of the all-time greats. His 1967 is one of the best years an actor has ever had.

Rest in Power to a trailblazing legend and being a guiding light for future black actors to follow in your footsteps. Hell of a career!

Sad news and even though they aren't like him for cultural reasons it's a reminder that Redford and Beatty and Eastwood - all of whom emerged much, much later are getting up there as well. Poitier as a cultural force was pretty singular - just in terms of awards visibility he destroyed every barrier - Oscar winner, Globe winner, BAFTA winner (!) - and 6 nods which for BAFTA is pretty remarkable. I always like to recommend the oddball film Pressure Point (1962) opposite Bobby Darin and also with Peter Falk - VERY racially charged film (Darin plays a racist and he acts his head off in this - not always good but he tries really hard). A nice change-up from the usual Poitier recommendations and it's like No Way Out(1950) - in both of those Poitier plays an educated man - a doctor and a psychiatrist. Just taking those roles was a big deal.........huge deal........ RIP

RIP Mr. Poitier. Thank you for breaking barriers and thank you for the movies. I remember the first time I saw him in a movie. When you're a little black kid and you turned on the tv when you see people who look like you, well, you stop and watch it. That movie happened to be "Uptown Saturday Night". After that it took TCM to show me the rest.

Even if you discount the trailblazer factor (which you obviously shouldn't... lol) he's still undeniably one of the greatest and most charming actors to ever live.
Rest easy, legend.

Rest in peace to a legend. Thank you for the body of work and the legacy you leave behind. Now Sophia Loren is our only living legend from the AFI lists...

Titans and trailblazers just keep falling. One of the absolute icons of the mid-century scene. I loved that video of him and Sandra Bullock meeting a few years back. He still fucking had it even then.

Wow. This is a tough one. The ultimate trailblazer for Black actors. His importance as a cultural icon and talent can not be stressed enough. Lots of appreciation will flood out everywhere now, but he was so beloved and integral to cinema, he already had that anyway. Rest easy, Sidney.

Great find Helena..Sidney was a great mentor for Denzel in his film career. Even today, Denzel still abides by the advice Poitier gave him nearly 40 years ago.

I saw this comment on Twitter a few weeks ago saying Denzel Washington is basically if Marlon Brando and Sidney Poitier had a lovechild, and it made me chuckle

Sidney Poitier, Oscar-winning actor and Hollywood's first Black movie star, dies at 94A wonderful actor, to whom no thread could do justice. A great body of work with so many scenes to showcase his immense talent. Also a pioneer who paved the way for many black actors in film. RIP to a legend. EDIT: I hadn't realized there was already a thread for this topic, and accidentally posted mine in the wrong section ( ) Thank you, mods, for moving it to the right place.
