Everybody Wants Some!! eviscerates this movie. That movie was a pure shot of joy and exuberance, not unlike a Sing Street or Paddington/Paddington 2. These recent PTA films have some film fans like you guys trying to convince yourselves you love the thing. It's so unnatural and weird to see.

I'm 33 years old and I don't have a driver's license, so that's an easy fix. I didn't think that would be possible in North America outside maybe New York and Boston.

I don't consider engaging with things that annoy me, "living in my brain". I just clown shit when it needs to be clowned, period.

"People aren't allowed different opinions to mine". Brought to you by the same brilliant mind who gave us "PTA should go back to being on coke" and "People who don't like Crash are actually just racist".

You know, immediately after leaving the theatre I felt that I loved it but that the film quite purposefully didn't try to reach any truly significant dimensions which resulted in it seeming kinda slight...but while that may be true, some hours have passed and I can't really stop thinking about it. Even if it is intentionally lighter and looser than PTA's other work, "Licorice Pizza" still has that tough-to-explain alluring quality that keeps drawing me back to it. Exactly what I thought as well and it's how I've felt about all of PTA's movies since TWBB. It's the same thing I say about Kubrick, even on the occasions I don't like one of his movies it still keeps 100% of my attention and I'm thinking about it for a long time afterward. He's just captured that movie magic.

Which makes it so great to return to his pieces again and again, discovering new flavors with each new viewing.

TWBB and The Master are so heavy I can only watch them every so often but Phantom Thread is one of the most rewatchable movies ever, seen it like six times already and I have a feeling it's going to be similar with Licorice Pizza. Definitely one I want to get on physical media as soon as I can.

Well, you're allowed to have different opinions, but they're wrong. There is no such thing as wrong opinions when it comes to something as subjective as art. I think even someone with only elementary understanding of what art is can realise that. Unless you're trolling. In that case i'm sorry for wasting my time replying to you.

Went and saw it again. This movie is just my happy place. And I mean this about everything - the scenes themselves, the atmosphere, the family feeling of it (SO many PTA closest ones in it - from Maya Rudolph and their kids to his (and Spielberg's) regular first AD Adam Somner to Cooper Hoffman's mother and so on), the mouth-watering visual textures, the immensely absorbing and vibrant sound design. Everything.
And goddamit, just HOW great are the actors! The whole ensemble is so spectacularly juicy that it's not even funny. But our central duo is just particularly delectable. I really paid close attention to the performances this time around and I'm so glad I did. Cooper Hoffman is just a total natural and a marvelous delight - even when Gary is being immature (so when he acts his age), he still manages to keep his charm beaming. And within all the confidence there's such sweetness and vulnerability too. And Alana...Damn. I mean, I'm a huge fan of HAIM anyway so I was predisposed to liking her in the movie and was definitely rooting for her to give a successful performance but she's a total revelation here. There's a spontaniety and an energy here that you don't really get from trained actors - you have the sense of something beautiful blossoming right in front of you in real time when you watch her (even though the scenes weren't shot in chronological order). This rewatch made me see some sort of a structure in the film and it is all about Alana and the twists and turns of her path. The adventures shown in the movie are never purposeless because they always end up affecting her character in various ways, and Haim portrays the developments and shifts with such genuineness and such feeling that you just can't help but fall in love with her. Between Krieps and her, PTA really knows how to find and elicit the best out of these very unconventional but endlessly gifted performers.
And how wonderful it is that our pair look like actual real people, with pimples and circles under the eyes and shit like that. Despite the specificity of their story, there's no sense of phoniness about those characters. It's just pure fucking gold. I just came from my second viewing and all I want is just to hang out with these two again.

It would be a shame to nominate the movie and ignore Alana.

Oh, and one more thing - the movie has some of the best needle drops I can think of but I want to especially single out 'Let Me Roll It' which is just pure bliss and creates an incredible mood for its scene, and 'Stumblin' In' which is particularly special to me because this song is a bit of a family staple (my dad played it to me all the time when I was a kid and it's continuously been with me all my life). I don't think I've ever heard it used in a film before so to hear it blast from the speakers was a moment of total personal joy.

I'm 33 years old and I don't have a driver's license, so that's an easy fix. If it makes you feel better (and honestly, it makes me feel better knowing I’m not alone), I didn’t get my license until last year. And then I was rear-ended less than a month later

I come out and I suddenly understand why the band write their name all in caps because how can you not come out of Licorice Pizza thinking HAIM! ? I said last year that she was my pick either to get, or be robbed of an Oscar nom and a couple of days out it looks like it will probably swing the latter way, but who cares? A star is born. Hope she does more. On the hangout movie scale I'd have it somewhere between Dazed and Confused (though I liked it much more than that) and American Graffiti (which I probably like it slightly less than) but Anderson has once again excelled at just conjuring this sublime world to revel in into being. I watch Phantom Thread and I can just taste it, and it's absolutely same again here. If his 07//12/14 efforts were a sort of loosely linked trilogy, I'd love him to nail us with another tasty retro throwback revolving around an odd relationship to round this one out too The trouble for me is that the movie is almost without exception at its best when Hoffman and HAIM! are together, and the longer it goes the less they are, and that is a problem it cannot overcome. If it were a little shorter that would be a little less of an issue, but it's a minor niggle anyway.

That part I actually thought worked really well (though it could probably have been trimmed down), because it plays strongly into both the 'getting her life together' growing up thing she goes for, and then of course the ultimate phoniness of it all is what takes the movie home. I can't believe I'm saying this about something that featured Tom Waits, but the Penn stuff is what I would have axed. I mean... Once again I do get what he's going for where after she shows him her tits he wanders off for 20 minutes of screen time, but watching this through again I'd probably just skip that 20 and I think it'd be a much better movie.
