YEEESSS I've been waiting so long for this! Maybe Baranski can finally get some more Emmy nods

Did you all watch the first episode? I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I haven't seen a single episode of Downtown Abbey, but watching this still gave me a feeling of deja vu. It's sumptuously produced and solidly performed, but the old money vs. new money storyline has been done to death. That said, I'll probaly still watch it.
Also, I may be in the minority here, but Carrie Coon (who I generally love) feels like an odd fit for Bertha.

This part was originally set for Amanda Peet, but she had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts with her Betty Broderick project.

Coon comes off as too modern, and I know that's the supposed to be whole vibe to Bertha and her family, but it takes me out of the story.

Christine Baranski is just delicious in the Grande Dame (Maggie Smith...) role, don't you think?

really enjoying this! Just finished Ep 6 with Baranski storming Carrie Coon's dinner party with Nathan Lane (the look on Bannister's face was priceless ). Heads have rolled for less! Performances from Baranski, Spector, and Coon are the highlights, as well as the costumes (of course) and the sets and the dialogue. Spector is very compelling as the larger-than-life robber baron based on Vanderbilt. Confident and cruel but not without his soft spots. I have no idea what's going on with Coon's voice but it works for the part and gives her a hard edge that's not present in the old money characters. Baranski is indeed delicious. One thing that's bothering me is how HBO submitted Baranski as supporting because she's anything but. If anything she's more lead than Coon but I think they're both leads because the conflict between old money and new money is the conflict between these two women. Either way. one thing she certainly isn't is supporting. And I can't for the life of me understand how this wasn't nominated for costumes at the Emmys

I liked the first season fine but Fellowes' brand of elevated soap isn't that interesting to me. Season 2 needs to up the dramatic stakes or I doubt this gets a third season. It can't just be rich people having petty squabbles.
