For me it's James Franco in Why Him? And a lot of his other comedic performances with the exception of The Disaster Artist. Another one is Nicholson in The Departed.

Jared Leto's Joker is the epitome of the thread title for me.

Nicholson in The Departed came to mind immediately. A ruinous turn that cripples his portions of the film so thoroughly that any greatness it might have attained is poleaxed from the jump.
Also, and I know this is kind of the intent of the performance, but I find Sandy Dennis in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf to be borderline unwatchable. I hate every single thing about it.

Seth Rogen in anything. I will never understand the appeal of this unfunny douchebag. Its baffling to me. Tobey Maguire as Spiderman/Peter Parker. He comes across as a whiny little annoying twerp in those Spiderman movies. IMO it should have been Jake Gyllenhaal as Spider man (superior actor, much more age appropriate, more likable and Gyllenaal is great at playing dorky characters) Tom Hiddleston as Loki. I wish Loki was killed off in the 1st Thor film but apparently he is loved by the masses and the MCU is milking it for all its worth. Adam Driver as Kylo Ren in those cringe worthy bad Star Wars sequels. I can't single out Driver alone here (everyone was subpar in those films imo), he was given crappy direction by Jar Jar Abrams and portrayed Kylo Ren as some emo Darth Vader worshiping pussy. Driver should have portrayed Kylo Ren like he did with his impressive performance in The Last Duel (Driver was so cunning and had such a dark aura about him in that film)

Brandon deWilde in Shane will forever be the answer for me. It is like nails on a chalkboard to me... and it ruins an otherwise great western.
I still have yet to rewatch it.

Your loathing of this performance has always reshaped my thoughts on the ending. I like to imagine that as Shane rides off and that kid calls out for him to come back, he's just thinking, "Come on, sweet death, take me now."

"I'll get you the records and what not..but listen to me son..don't disappoint me on this. Or some other guy will be putting their fat cock up little Miss Freud's ass." What a barrel of laughs he was in this film. If Scorsese had convinced Gene Hackman to come out of retirement to play Costello, I wonder what the tone of this film would've been.

And yeah, Driver is amazingly awful, it beggars belief. What the hell ever happened to intimidating villains? They made the bad guys of the SW sequels into the Three Stooges. Unprofessional shits, all of them.

Jennifer Lawrence in American Hustle I won't even single out JLaw for that film. I'll say everyone (except Jeremy Renner's solid performance) were annoying as fuck. I'd rather watch a sex tape featuring Roseanne Barr & Tom Arnold than giving American Hustle a re watch. Just an insufferably annoying film all around

Mark Ruffalo in Spotlight was my first choice. The "THEY KNEW AND THEY LET IT HAPPEN" scene is definitely one of the biggest "Look at me, I'm ACTING" moments I can think of recently.

I forgot about Foxcatcher. That movie was so good. I didn't find anything about it that I would go as far as to call it annoying. But I see what you mean about him playing it a little too pouty.
Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Phoenix's Joker was incredibly irritating. Unbelievably broad and cartoonish but it's also so over the top that it sometimes works in the same way McAvoy playing a 10 year-old boy works in Split...

Oscar deep cuts: Nicholson and Hickey in Prizzi's Honor -- horrible affected accents and broad hammy stereotypes Durning in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas -- cringey song and dance, awful Southern accent Tilly in Agnes of God -- simpering and annoying Quaid in The Last Detail -- simpering and annoying
both those last two are really on-the-nose analogues to childlike innocence and there's nothing else to their characters, and both are unable to pull it off without pulling shrill affectatious histrionics.
and for that matter, I was never much of a fan of Sarandon in Dog Day Afternoon. Cazale or Durning would've been much better choices.

and don't get me started on DiCaprio in Revolutionary Road which has to be the most shrill performance he's ever given. 90% of that performance is just yelling, and all at the same volume and pitch. Just incessant, like nails on a chalkboard. What a terrible movie about boring suburban white people. We get it, the suburbs are miserable. We saw 100 better movies about it in the 90s... Just get a fucking divorce already.
you wanted hot takes, I give you hot takes!
