The MTV Movie awards and the Gotham awards have gone "gender-less" or "sex-less". It's simply best performance. I suppose the reason behind is to cater to intersex and non-binary individuals. I am not sure precisely, but we are inevitably heading in the direction of "Why do we need gender/sex specific categories?" train of thought. What are your thoughts on the issue? Is this something we should consider for the Oscars, SAG, and BAFTA awards? Obviously it would cut down on the number of awards handed out. Some have speculated that this will only disproportionately favor the men over the women.
Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't the Academy/BAFTAs/SAG awards allow actors and actresses to submit the category they want to be in. So Elliot Page can opt to being considered best actor or best supporting actor, rather than best actress or supporting actress. If Indya Moore ever put up an award-worthy performance, they could choose to be either in actor or actress category.

Are they just changing the title or what? What happens if one year there are nine men and Streep in the category. Then what do you do???

Yea what happens when men sweep the category one year? I've never seen a man give a better performance than a lady. Not sure why that would change now bigot.

There's simply more good roles for men than women, getting rid of the Best Actress Oscars will only make that worse, since studios count on nominations and wins to promote many of those movies.

My thoughts exactly. This is why we have actor and actress. It increases the number of nominations a film can get AND gives both genders equal opportunity to receive Oscar recognition.
It's indeed a bad idea. Do you think we're going to run into issues where a non-binary/intersex/two-spirit person sues the BAFTAs/SAG/Globes/Oscars for discriminating against them?

i have been saying this for years.
it's disproportionately men that win, well, most non-gendered categories at the oscars; why would the flip to snubbing female actors be a tipping point? the industry is horribly behind at giving women opportunities for roles, and if the oscars are a reflection of that reality, then it's something that should exist and be appropriately leveled against hollywood as an institution.

As others have said, at the moment there are still on the aggregate better parts for men than women. This will result in either women almost never winning anything or deserving men losing out. This helps no one. I can guarantee you the people demanding this will be the first ones to complain when you have five men getting nominated for something even though it's a situation they would have created themselves.

i don't know the legal jurisdictions for this type of thing, but i mean yeah there are at least a few enby actors out there thesedays and will probably be more in due time as attitudes progress on this stuff. not sure why increasing oscar numbers is really necessary. i think the show could stand to lose several as is (merge features and shorts, remove doc, foreign language, and animated). nobody really cares about this shit anyways, might as well avoid any sort of funky issues down the road with respect to identity.

This isn't knew for example in the past they awarded people from their performance in Cannes in the 60s, I guess was 1965, then the actress was oscar nominated for that film.-
I can understand this in several LGTBQ+A festivals, and even in big ones, this year for example they do this on Donostia, and Javier Bardem who was the favorite of winning best actor, was furious, because he lost for being a man, a woman, was prized instead of him.
In Big Awards Shows, I can understand for example in the Emmys in the cathegory best guest actor in a comedy or a drama. No matters if it's a he, she or it.- But in the big trophys, not. should be born sex gender.-
Any way blame to Butlers parents for having sex in 1955.-

Trans-performers don't complicate this at all. Elliot Page = actor/supporting actor / Mj Rodriguez = actress/supporting actress. Very simple. The main complication would be "they/them" nonbinary or intersex performers who wouldn't fit into either category. You have examples where some folks who identify as nonbinary are still ok with he/him or she/her pronouns (Emma Corrin & Alex Newell are two recent examples of that), and I'm not aware of any examples where a nonbinary performer wasn't submitted for a performance in a major role precisely because of the nonbinary structure, although I can see that becoming an issue down the line.
Honestly, I really hate the idea of genderless performance awards for reasons listed above and for my own -- one big one is that's TWO fewer performances that get to win.

Honestly, I really hate the idea of genderless performance awards for reasons listed above and for my own -- one big one is that's TWO fewer performances that get to win. This has already been addressed when Asia Kate Dillon got nominated by the Critics' Choice for Supporting Actor. They chose the category they wanted to compete in and were campaigned as such. "Actor" is also a more gender-neutral term than "Actress," so I imagine any gender-fluid performer would want to go with that.

What do you do about Indya Moore from Pose or Asia Kate Dillon, or Sam Smith? These individuals don't really identify with either male or female.
Personally, I think that Moore/Dillon/Smith should simply pick the category they want.

Agreed 100%. As for Moore I know she's been submitted consistently in Supporting Actress for Pose, and she uses she/her pronouns in addition to they/them. And as Stephen said, Dillon was submitted Supporting Actor for Billions. As long as these performers have the choice there shouldn't be an issue.

So basically we are going to give out awards to 2 actors and 2 actresses, but refrain from using gender specific titles. Still don’t like this, but whatever.

So... Like, a winner and a runner up? This doesn't solve the core problem of the (presumably) 10 nominees slanting heavily in one direction, even if picking two winners allows them to send one win each way.

Looks like they are going to have LAFCA voters pick two performers from the lead and supporting categories. They are still going to have 4 winners. It looks like they are creating a problem that never existed in the first place. Voters will be obligated to pick one male and one female. If two males or females win the lead or supporting, people are going to get upset.

They could redo it just to be woke. this is a horrible idea. I give it five years before they change it back.

I give it five years before they change it back. The whole thing feels like a bad compromise. If they are really concerned about going "genderless", just hand out two acting awards for Lead Actor and Supporting Actor. Or maybe separate them by movie genre Or do Best Performance by an LGBTQI Actor.
