Like any self-respecting movie buff, I finally decided to watch 'Apocalypse Now'. But there are 38476473 different versions of this movie available online. Among the main versions, there is the theatrical version with 2h30 and the redux version with around 3h. Which of these versions should I watch?

Watch the theatrical version first. It's the one that was immediately canonized and unlike Blade Runner where there was demand for new versions due to original studio interference, Apocalypse Now in its originally released form was more than enough to satisfy. The longer versions just come from there being a lot more material that was shot. If you enjoy it enough, down the line you can check out Redux as it does expand on the original film considerably (though the pacing affects the impact of the experience) and then Final Cut was Coppola looking to reach a happy medium between those two versions.

Theatrical, and only theatrical.

Well, you can't go by me because I love them all ..........but the ' 79 original cut is the best cut because it feels weird and odd in ways that feel unsettling and right - and don't try to make it seem like a "normal movie" by smoothing things over............. people will tell you he shouldn't have included this scene or that scene but basically what it comes down to for me is there should be nothing after "the bridge" scene other than the march towards the movies final act - and iirc neither other version has that (?) - it has to be bridge scene and then ominous dread so ..............'79 definitely. Enjoy!

Mike has the right of it. The original has a dreamy, hypnotic aimlessness to it that adds to the experience. The Redux, I think, adds a lot of richness that might appeal to fans of the original, and I've known people to prefer it overall. The recent re-edit tries to strike a balance between both and largely succeeds. They all have their merits, but the original really should be your first experience.

You should watch the original version, and if you love it then you should go from there. I can't imagine someone could hate the original movie, and have any interest in watching a longer version

The Redux. I feel the plantation sequence really adds to the film's hypnotic quality.

Redux. Don't really understand the criticisms about it. It adds some interesting texture, and doesn't really slow down the film IMO, which is more monotonous without the plantation scenes.
