And by bad, I mean *bad* not just overrated and underserving (there have been plenty of good but not really great movies that have been nominated for Best Picture over the years but I’m not really talking about them as you can probably guess). So what do you think?? Thank you very very much for your comments and opinions in advance !!!

Yes, I admit there have quite a few forgettable movies over the years that have been nominated for Best Picture.

Obviously this is all subjective but I find American Sniper, Bohemian Rhapsody, Vice and to a slightly lesser extent Green Book to be genuinely bad. Les Misérables isn't far off and neither is Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.

That’s probably true (certainly hopefully speaking). It’s one thing to find a movie overrated and find it hard to see why it would get nominated for, or in some situations win, Best Picture. But it’s another thing for a Best Picture nominee to be flat out bad. It’s a very rare thing indeed.

There are plenty of BP noms I don’t care for or would give a low rating, but I don’t think I’d say any were flat out genuinely bad movies.

So yes, I can really see where you’re coming from.

Looking at recent years at least, I think both Bohemian Rhapsody and Hacksaw Ridge are genuinely terrible films.

From my own perspective, only considering films I rate a 3 or less (which I think is a fair start point for bad), Black Swan seems to be the only one I can find.
That's the thing with Best Picture nominees, they are more often than not, bland or poor or forgettable or all three; but I rarely find one flat out bad.

Bad as in completely fucking incompetent filmmaking? The closest one, certainly in recent times, that I can think of is Les Mis, but if you mean bad in the more general sense of the term... You could go on for a while Blind Side would be the first pile of crap in the heap for me. Deplorable stuff.

Jojo Rabbit was offensively bad. There's 1 or 2 every year.

Probably none. I mean, there are a lot of movies that has been nominated for BP that I don't like at all (or even despise) but I wouldn't say that any of them are genuinely bad (as in it being throughly terrible filmmaking).

Yes, this is a very important point you make here Dale. It one thing to think of a movie as being overrated and thinking a movie is flat out bad. There can definitely be a big difference between the two.

Honestly most of the movies in recent years that have been nominated for best picture are not genuinely bad, outside of some real problematic and or sappy stuff like Extremely Loud, or The Blind Side. Most of them are still well-made, even if I don't care for the content itself.
For some truly unwatchable wretched best picture nominees, you'd have to go back much earlier in the academy's history. I'm talking about things like Cavalcade, or King Solomon Mines, or Cimarron. These films are very much of their time, but even considering that they suck so hard, that I can't even really recommend them.

Yeah Cimarron and Cavalcade are my two worst winners, I think. Looking through my ratings, Cleopatra is my lowest nominee that I've seen.
I'm mostly indifferent at worst to the recent ones people really hate. Extremely Loud is probably the one I had the least patience for.

When's the last time someone saw The Broadway Melody? It's ridiculous.

Of the recent ones Green Book is definitely offensive. The Rose Tattoo, Reds, and all James L. Brooks movies are all pretty bad.
