Legally Blonde underrated again but most of these lineups are so great I'm not even mad about it. Sean Bean!!

That Actress line-up is incredible. I wish I could say the same. Unfortunately, that's the one that disappointed me the most Tom Wilkinson was great and would be a worthy winner for In the Bedroom, but I never got the love for Spacek's performance (I don't remember her doing much outside of smoking and slapping Marisa Tomei). Take her and Maribel Verdu, add Thora Birch (Ghost World) and Audrey Tatou (Amélie) and you would have a near-perfect lineup. Also, not nominating Mulholland Dr. for Original Score is a crime. I hope this forum doesn't follow the Academy's pattern of ignoring Badalamenti over and over again. He'll be deserving of a nomination again in 1999 and 1992. I'm happy about the rest, though. This is a great year, and we got it right in most categories.

I always forget to vote for the nominees (I gotta remember to do it, dammit!) so I guess I can't complain but I just want to say that I'm baffled that someone would deem the editing of "Ichi the Killer" to be worthy of such high praise. I only watched it a couple of days ago and was rather shocked by how awful the pacing, and how slow and unenergetic the flow of the movie ended up being. That thing needed the energy of Sion Sono to work and instead it was just a slog. Which is very weird for a movie this violent.

His films are generally very slow paced. But Ichi the Killer is also a deconstruction/satire of the action - crime genre. Everything in this movie (not just the pace) is the exact opposite of what one would expect in a film of this genre (just look at the ending, which is a total inversion of the common trope of the two big protagonists/antagonists clashing it out in an epic battle and the anticlimax we get is one of the funniest, most farcical endings ever for me). You're either on board with Miike's farce or you're not and I'm a big fan of this so obviously I think that the editing is perfect and absolutely matches with what Miike tries to achieve with this film. Ichi The Killer is one of the greatest satires of the 21st century and it doesn't only make fun of a whole film genre, but the audience and their expectations as well.

I admittedly wasn't on board with the farce, not finding most of what I saw on the screen funny or amusing or disgusting or shocking. Mostly I just sat there a bit poker faced and unengaged. But in my imagination I can see the movie working a bit better with a more energetic and steady flow. If the intention was to flip the genre expectations (although I personally didn't have any, unaware of what the film was about before watching it and knowing it only by name and gruesome reputation) and bore me, Miike sure succeeded

Yeah, Birch and Tautou were ridiculously snubbed. And if McKellen and Bean is in your ballot imo Mortensen should be there as well. Blanchett had a great year and not getting a single nod is weird. Loved that Ghost World managed to get in BP, especially in such a strong year, personally I'd put Piano Teacher instead of AI and the lineup would be divine. Anyways, nice presentation pendragon
