1. Is it even organized, or is it just a random assortment of Blu-rays/DVDs and you know where everything is? 2. If it's organized, is it arranged by director, alphabetically, by year, by genre, or some other way? Some combination of these methods? 3. If it's arranged by director, how? Are they put together alphabetically, contemporaneously, similarity in style/genre, or just according to your favorites? 4. Also, if it's arranged by director, what do you do with films where they're the only thing you own by a specific director? Do you have a separate section of "lonely" discs, or do you weave them in with the rest of your collection somehow? My library is mostly organized by director, but sort of according to genre as well. All my Woody Allen films are next to a bunch of other comedies, for example, and I have Ridley Scott's Alien and Blade Runner next to James Cameron, and other miscellaneous sci-fi stuff. I also have all non-English language films together, and they're sorted by director so occasionally there will be a random English language film in the mix (like my Werner Herzog films or Stoker among my Park Chan-wook films). A lot of franchises are kept together instead of with certain directors (like I have the Indiana Jones series next to the Bond franchise and the Rocky films rather than with other Spielberg films). For "lonely" discs, I try to arrange in a way that makes sense to me, like if it came out the same year as another film, is similar in genre, or if stars the same actor. So overall it's kind of a hodgepodge. Just curious how other people organized their collections.

1. No, it's not organized at all... I'd like to organize it eventually - I'd do it alphabetically by film title. Maybe I'd keep my Criterion editions in a separate space? Not sure.

Alphabetically organized. Same with my books, although I take them off the shelves so often that they get all mixed up and I have to arrange them again. I like being able to control things - I'm considering putting labels on every drawer in the kitchen so that I never misplace an implement or ingredient. I've been too lazy to go out and get stickers since I came up with this idea... oh, three years ago.

I’m pushing 1,000 dvd/blu-rays. Too difficult for me to keep organized. I have dvds separated from blu-rays, criterion’s all grouped together, and a few director’s filmography grouped together. I also have a section of just comedies and one of super hero flicks. Other than that it’s a free for all and I certainly can’t locate everything (I have a log of what I own though).

Dang, I can't see myself keeping over 100 movies. What's the point, I won't get to them often enough. TV shows are a bit different, as I can see myself rewatching shows more often... but I'm even pickier about shows that I like than movies, so I don't have many at all.

(I have a log of what I own though). My library isn't large enough for this to be necessary, but I am definitely planning on making a log for my mom's collection at some point since hers is pretty huge. If I want to watch something that I don't own (like a noir or a classical era Hollywood film), I often have to check to see if she has it first before I see if it's streaming somewhere.... but only she knows how to find it because her library isn't really organized (somehow she can remember where everything is...).

I've kept any and all purchases throughout the years so it's a lot and it ain't pretty! I keep formats separate, naturally - DVD, VHS, Blu. And I'll group a director's work if I have a bunch from 'em - Woody, Coens, Bergman, Kieslowski, Hitchcock, De Palma etc. I also have a section of stuff I haven't seen yet and stuff I wanna watch soon. Everything else is a mosh tho I have strangely memorized the layout....

When I first started buying DVDs I tried to be very rigorous about alphabetizing. I gave up eventually as the collection expanded, nobody else in the family would put them away correctly and we had a habit of knocking over the DVD towers. Right now I have them organized in three groups as movies I haven't seen and need to watch, movies I've seen and need to rewatch, and movies I've seen and don't need to rewatch

I started collecting in high school and it’s been a long time continuing to do so. I find the movies don’t really have that much resale value so even if I don’t watch most of the, very often I just hang onto them. I’ve slowed down on purchasing very significantly but I still enjoy having the collection.

Currently they're unorganized, as I've moved recently and I'm working on making a hanging dvd display for my wall. But initially, I had them mostly organized by when I first got them, with the exception of keeping sequels or similar collections together. What I'm planning for the wall display though will be similar, although they'll be broken more into groups - criterion dvds on one side, collections on another, etc.

Mostly alphabetical within their own sub-sections (Blu-Ray/DVD/Criterion).

More or less by how much I like a movie with my favorites first with some sub organization for genre.

My DVDs/Blu rays are simply organized in alphabetical order (regardless of genre). I just find it much easier to find a specific film that way. I've cut back big time on purchasing dvds as of late though cause I'm honestly running out of room on where I can put them! lol ( I have well over 200 dvds/blu rays at the moment that are positioned on these shelves in my bedroom closet. )

First by type/medium (Criterion, Steelbook, regular Bluray, etc.), and in some cases then sub-categorized further (e.g. Criterions are divided by books, digipacks, regular). Then sorted alphabetically by filmmaker, with each filmmaker sorted in chronological order. Exceptions made on a case-by-case basis, such as the Studio Ghibli Shout Factory steelbook collection, which are organized by color. Sorry ... you asked ...

For a while I struggle finding a way that wasn't as tedious for me to look for one, at first it was alphabetically, then by directors which wasn't a good idea as I'm not a completist, then by genres ( terrible idea ), it's been a couple of years since I opted to organize them by year of production - within their own sections ( dvds, blu-ray/4k, criterion ) - and that was the solution for me.

Oh honeys, I have several thousand and I've got to the stage where I keep the older movies in leather-bound DVD storage folders that hold around 400 movies per folder. These are often movies that have no little to no re-sale value as the market is already saturated (Classic & popular movies) so I don't feel bad about having thrown away the packaging. I have around 6 of these at the moment.
Director collections eg, Luis Buñuel, Hitchcock, Woody Allen, Wes Anderson, Egoyan, Almodovar, etc - I tend to keep together. World Cinema, by country for large groups (French, Italian, Spanish, etc) by Continent for smaller one (African). The bulk of English speaking movies, I tend to keep in genres, (comedy, drama, thriller, documentary, etc) so I know where to find them.
I also have various storage drives now for all the downloaded stuff - similar system of genres, countries.
As well as being beautiful and exciting, I have a very addictive personality, so if I like a director's work, say like recently with Elia Suleiman's It Must Be Heaven, then I have to acquire and see everything else he's done. I'm quite insatiable. Like most impossibly beautiful actresses, I have this tremendous psychic void to fill which is why I've been prescribed mass love... and tequila. I've also been diagnosed with terminal critical consumerism, which means I can't just be content with 50 pairs of Louboutins but need 500, otherwise I'll have a panic attack (and a tantrum). I like to own things... cats... and people.
For those of you thinking 'she sounds really messed up, which is what we suspected...', I'd just like to remind everyone about George & Amal's compulsive collection of mansions & estates in California; Lake Como, Italy; Cabo, Mexico; Berkshire, England; East 53rd Street, NYC and Provence, France. I'm not the only one who's out of control!
