Any fans? I do like him specifically in Trainspotting and in Fargo. He hasn't blown me away at any point but he's always a welcome presence and does have a natural charm to some of his performances.

I like him. A very good, very charismatic actor. Done some wonderful work in things like Trainspotting, Shallow Grave, Moulin Rouge etc. Also gave the best performance in the Star Wars Prequels, which explains why people were still excited to see him get his own Disney + show as Obi-Wan.
I probably had higher hopes for him than he ended up delivering. I thought he could possibly end up the best (screen) actor of his generation based on his early promise, but he had a tendency to put out a lot of okay to meh performances in between his more notable work. He's getting better with age, and he's a performer deserving of respect.

He's bland/boring as hell to me. I honestly don't think there is any role or film he's been in that has "wowed" me and I'm pretty sure I don't own any dvds with him in it. Not a fan of Trainspotting (found all the characters to be annoying with Ewan being the worst) The most recent film I saw him in was Doctor Sleep and wasn't impressed with his performance at all. Just a boring effort.
(I haven't seen Fargo though so maybe I shouldn't give up just yet. I read that show got pretty good reviews so I'll have to get around to viewing that some time)

Plus , he's banging Mary Elizabeth Winstead...Lucky SOB !

Have you guys watched A LIFE LESS ORDINARY ? One of my favourite Danny Boyle films. He had such a sizzling chemistry with Cameron Diaz.

He has his moments, I like him in his collaborations with Danny Boyle and some other stuff but he's often bland and uninteresting. Even in his fine/okay-ish performances, you feel like some other actor would do the part more justice.

I've always been a fan. I think he's a likeable screen presence, who absolutely killed it as Obi-Wan especially given you know it was the prequels, and was great in stuff like Beginners, and Trainspotting.
I also vaguely remember following his career when I was younger. I just assumed he was gonna be a leading man type off the back of Big Fish really, but his career really didn't follow the trajectory I expected of him. Instead he settled into more of a grey zone area, neither just the lead nor straight-up supporting. It's a bit interesting, I'll admit.

I don't think he's ever been truly great in anything but I think "welcome presence" sums it up. Even if he's never been great I don't think he's ever been bad or even "meh" either. I wish he was a bigger star because he's best at screen presence driven "leading man" type acting.

He's good. Kind of hard to categorize, because the nature and intensity of his effort varies wildly from project to project - probably moreso than any comparable big-name actor. And I don't mean in a Nicolas Cage sense; McGregor is more like a mix of Jake Gyllenhaal and Chiwetel (before Chiwetel's acting got neutered).

Looks like a typical ivy leaguer / yearbook president and has had 1 pretty good performance in Smashed.

He can be a lot of fun. I think his best performance is actually the role he's most known for: his Obi-Wan Kenobi is pretty damn excellent and really makes the prequels worth watching even as he has to struggle with piss-poor dialogue, naff CGI and actors who just aren't up to his standard. He masterfully embodies Alec Guinness's energy without feeling like he's doing an impersonation, and he also isn't afraid to do his own thing. He's also very good in The Ghost Writer, The Men Who Stare at Goats and Big Fish, and I think he really does a fine job in Doctor Sleep.
But his Danny Boyle collaborations don't do all that much for me, and I actively dislike him in Moulin Rouge! His Fargo performance is okay, but really feels surface-level (though I won't lie: I feel like he screwed over Kyle MacLachlan for the Emmy that year, and we all can agree who was better at playing twins/doppelgangers that year).

Not very interesting at all and I'm not sure why. Maybe he just hasn't gotten a good enough role to really sink his teeth into yet. None of his stuff is remotely transformative or that distinct from each other and I wouldn't call him a particularly charismatic performer. I really liked him in The Impossible but a lot of actors could've done that role. There's something missing from his stuff that keeps him from being truly great IMO. I want him to get something really makeup-heavy and OTT just so he can prove he can do it because most of his stuff just blends into each other.
*haven't seen Halston so my opinion might change but I've heard mixed things about that perf

I think for me it's a resume issue more than a talent issue. He's talented but I don't think he's had ample opportunities to really show that off. I can't picture him in a period piece with a lot of makeup or accent-work, or something trippy or absurd, or something requiring comic timing, or a prestige fantasy program like GoT, or a dark indie character study like The Woodsman or a leading role in an A24 horror piece and it's just because he hasn't done those kinds of projects like at all. His resume is so bland.

I always found him solid at best, bland at worst. Not particularly captivating, magnetic, or charismatic as an actor (except for Trainspotting).
