Christopher Nolan turned 51 today. Happy Birthday to one of the best directors working in Hollywood. Feel free to list your 5 favorite Nolan films.and what you'd like to see him do next. 1. The Dark Knight 10/10 2. Memento 9/10 3. Batman Begins 8.5/10 4. Inception 8/10 5. Insomnia 8/10 Obviously I'll support whatever Nolan wants to do next (IN NOLAN I TRUST) but I think it'd be awesome if he made an R rated horror film. It'd be really cool to see him tackle the horror genre and he hasn't made an R rated film since Insomnia (and that came out in 2002).

I've always liked him but in the last couple of years I started to really fucking love the guy.
1. Dunkirk 2. Tenet 3. Inception 4. The Dark Knight 5. Memento
As for what I'd like to see him do next? Well, the correct answer is whatever he's got cooking up there in that head of his. But if I were to fantasize about things, I'd love him to finally do his Howard Hughes movie. Unless it's very similar to The Aviator or something, I think enough time has passed since Scorsese's take on him for somebody else to make that movie (nobody cared about Beatty's flick so I'm not even taking it into consideration). I'd really love Nolan to take a big dive into a character-based picture with old Hollywood providing a good epic backdrop. He's said that he loves that script of his so I hope that he gets to make it one day.

Memento Dunkirk The Dark Knight The Prestige Batman Begins
We don't always get along but he has some very high highs. Future projects wise, I'd love for a woman to helm a film.

Happy Birthday I like him early but I think I liked the guy he was (when he was the new Hitchcock) more than the guy he is now (the new Spielberg or whatever).........before the expensive toys, the complexities, the dream stage levels, the comic books, the explosions, well you get the idea.....the weird thing is though - he's never made anything I dislike - it's just that I love those first 3 movies that's all - even Tenet I appreciated the craft - and I did not understand or care about Tenet at all....... As for what he does next - just write a simple direct film - a good script about a girl, a guy and a gun - that I don't need a fncking grad degree to understand....just sayin' Chris 1. Memento 2. Following 3. Insomnia
4. The Dark Knight 5. The Prestige

Future projects wise, I'd love for a woman to helm a film. That's a great idea that didn't even cross my mind. What actress would you choose as the lead in a Nolan film? I'd love to see Eva Green be in a Nolan film at some point. She is way too talented & beautiful to be wasting her time with crap like 300: Rise of an Empire or Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. She can be so sultry and mysterious which is why I think she'd be perfect for a role in a Nolan film (whether it be lead or supporting of course).

1. The Dark Knight 2. Memento 3. Dunkirk 4. Interstellar 5. Inception
I have a feeling he's just going to be a blockbuster guy from now on but I'd really like him to do something smaller scale. Either a thriller again or gasp a straight character drama for adults. The initial rumors of Tenet being a glossy Hitchcockian romantic thriller also warmed me up to the idea of him doing something like that like North by Northwest.

He is definitely one of the most interesting Hollywood directors working today, even though his work doesn't always work for me. I'm always looking forward to whatever he does next, so I don't have any particular demands.

That's a cool choice (it's also a shame she paired with Burton for some of his most forgettable recent titles). Would love if he worked with Debicki again, and some other pairings I'd be interested in are Sarah Snook, Ruth Negga, Imogen Poots, Olivia Cooke, or Riley Keough.

Inception is definitely my favorite, then I love Memento, The Prestige, Dunkirk, and The Dark Knight trilogy.
As for what I'd like to see him do next, I'd honestly like to see him go in a totally different direction. Great at big set pieces and a lot of moving parts, so can he block a musical? The man loves time, so can he apply that angle to a romance before he inevitably kills off the wife?

Interstellar Tenet The Prestige
are head and shoulders above his other work, so i will just say those three. idk why people would think he would do well with horror lol he is terrible with genre and occasionally good with tomfoolery and melodrama which is like the opposite of what good horrors are made of

Happy Birthday to one of the great filmmakers working today! 1. Memento 2. The Dark Knight 3. Inception 4. Dunkirk 5. Tenet I would like to see him tackle something that doesn't have to deal with the concept of time. We get it..time is relative. Perhaps something smaller in scope.

1. Memento 2. The Dark Knight 3. Dunkirk 4. Interstellar 5. Inception Insomnia could use a rewatch though. I've never disliked a Nolan film, although Tenet definitely felt like a bit of a step down for him. Like others here, I'd like to see him step away from giant blockbusters and maybe get into something smaller again. Another Noir mystery like Memento, or tread some new ground like a horror or even a western. I'd love to see him work with Sam Rockwell. They look like buddies in this Oscar luncheon from 2017. A reunion with Guy Pearce would also be appreciated. Fassbender, Gosling, Ed Norton, & Ben Foster all feel like eventual Nolan guys as well.

I'm definitely down with the horror mentions. Would also love to see him finally tackle his Howard Hughes script.

Yeah I like the idea of Nolan making a smaller budget film again. Scale the budget back, no Boeing 747 airplanes being blown up this time just a more intimate film (perhaps more of a character study). Who knows but its fun to speculate.

1. Memento - 10/10 2. The Dark Knight - 10/10 3. Dunkirk - 9/10 4. Following - 9/10 5. Interstellar - 8.5/10 Tenet is my least favorite thing he's done so far, but I still rate it a 7.5 and think it's a lot of fun to obsess over as a kind of headspinning lark within his filmography. Everything else gets at least an 8 from me. For several years now, a female-led horror film has been #1 on my wishlist for things I'd like to see him direct.... like a character slowly losing their mind and unable to distinguish fantasy from reality (Inception was originally conceived as a horror film I think). Something along the lines of Polanski's Repulsion or Bergman's Hour of the Wolf but on a bigger canvas, maybe told through memories/flashbacks and a crazy narrative structure like Last Year at Marienbad (time and space being fluid, with no certainty over what is happening to the character(s), what they are remembering or imagining, etc.). So something not super accessible to general audiences lol, but not really a stretch given that Tenet is probably his least accessible movie yet, I think it would be kind of interesting to see Nolan go more and more experimental. But lately I've been thinking how now would be a great opportunity to make his Howard Hughes film. With Covid restrictions, this might be as good a time as any to scale things back a bit and do something smaller for a change. His script supposedly focuses on Hughes' later, more eccentric and reclusive years....... which might actually make for a perfect Covid-era film. Plus, as others have noted, Nolan has said that writing that script was the best writing experience he's ever had, so I'm dying to see what's been sitting in his drawer all these years.

Thanks for the replies so far folks!
Another potential idea/project that would be pretty cool would be a modern day gangster film (either set in London or somewhere in the States). Get a cast of A-List heavy hitters and make it hard R. Not sure how Nolan feels about the gangster/mafia/crime genre but I could have sworn he said he really digs Heat. Just a thought.

1. Memento 2. Following 3. Insomnia
4. The Dark Knight 5. The Prestige Interesting that you have The Prestige ranked so high.... for some reason I thought you had all the Batman films ranked higher than The Prestige since that is more overtly sci-fi/fantasy, which I know isn't always your thing. I actually have it ranked near the bottom of his filmography since it feels like more of a "trick" to me than most of his other films.

Yeah I mean I certainly like Batman Begins and Dunkirk more overall where The Prestige loses me at the end - but then I also love it until the end more ..........so it could be 7th too that's true - in general I'm horrible at ranking things tbh ............my brain (cue to the crowd shouting: " What brain pacinoyes, you jackass?") functions less structurally - I mean, usually I type responses to threads a full 15 minutes before I've even thought through anything at all

I've been itching for an Inception and Interstellar rewatch for a few years now. Liked but didn't love the latter when I saw it in theatres, might like it more now.
