How the fuck can Lindsay Duncan just swoop in the final season and steal the show from everybody? I feel a LITTLE bad for Scott Glenn.. Lindsay Duncan was amazing this week .. she provided me with me first true emotional reaction to this season ... I was hoping for it last week with the Nora themed episode , she almost always provides me with an emotional moment however this season her episode last week fell just short. Grace was truly surprising and beautiful this week.

Best episode of the series since "International Assassin." I can understand it being divisive to those who are fixated on the central storylines of Kevin, Jr. and Nora, but I absolutely love it when The Leftovers does their bottle episodes that basically act as acting showcases. And last night, Scott Glenn turned in what might very well be the best performance in his entire career. And yes, Lindsay Duncan owns every second she's on-screen as well.

So I guess I'm the only one who think the new season is the weakest by quite a margin then huh?

So I guess I'm the only one who think the new season is the weakest by quite a margin then huh? On the contrary, I think it's easily the best season by quite a margin. So far, at least.

So I guess I'm the only one who think the new season is the weakest by quite a margin then huh? I still think Season 2 has the strongest run of opening episodes, but Season 3 so far dwarfs what came in Season 1 up to this point (although "Two Boats and a Helicopter" really does run it a tight race).

I'm really pretty baffled by how much people love the new season. Glad you guys are enjoying it so much but I can't seem to connect with it at all so far, outside of a few great scenes that occur here and there. I guess I liked the first episode a lot but the last two leave a lot to be desired for me.

I rewatched the second season in the days just before the premiere of the new season, I am starting to regret making that decision. 2 is just so incredible that I suppose I may have been bound to be disappointed by the new stuff. Hopefully I will find a way to connect to it.

Finally a great episode.
I think it's been the weakest season so far. The first episode was rather good, the 2nd was pretty bad and easily the worst of the series, the third was watchable. Now there is finally a great episode in this season. I'm hoping it means the show is turning itself around and will be unleashing pure gold for the next 4 eps.

That last shot was so good I wanted to cry. Coupling it with that god damn song (that they used so well throughout) just made it all the better. Fuck you, Kevin!

Agreed that was the best of the season so far, and it looks like a Matt-centric episode next week.

I fucking love this season . It's just outdoing itself with each new episode. I was skeptical going into this episode because I've always hated the Kevin's-hallucinations aspect of the story, but my expectations were subverted in every way possible. I feel like we're finally getting to the payoff of Kevin's long deteriorating psyche, and the execution here was glorious. Also, if by some miracle Theroux and/or Carrie get nominated this year, this episode is prime submission material for either of them. Their last scene in the hotel was just a masterclass of acting and one of the show's best moments ever. The last shot of Nora killed me. I'm also continuing to love the eclectic music choices this season. Can't wait for the Matt episode next week. Judging by this season's current trajectory of quality, it could be one of the show's best ever.

I really can't believe we're coming down to the last stretch of episodes. It's a real shame.
3.04 was a killer episode for both Theroux and Coon. And it has some of the best cinematography the show has had to date. That last shot was fantastic.

God, I am loving this season even more with each passing episode. So curious to see what note it lands on.

HE SAID HIS NAME. So what do we think, is Bill Camp coming back from that lion mauling?

And the show is back to contrived plotlines, on-the-nose metaphors, exposition, and zero emotion. I was so hopeful episode 4 meant a return to form but I guess it may have just been a fluke.

That was some heavy shit, Doc. I feel like it's only going to get worse from here. Every time that Richter score swells it's powerful stuff. I loved the mention of Today's Special, haha. I also thought that show was a dream for fifteen years.

Wow. As per standard this season, another magnificent episode. Not only by far the best Laurie-centric hour that the show has ever had, but one of its best altogether. Amy Brenneman was in absolute top form; her nonverbal acting during the phone call scene at the end is some of the most moving, emotionally charged performing ever on this show. I loved seeing the bond that Laurie formed with Nora -- who was wonderfully off-the-rails this week, giving Carrie Coon prime material to continue to be the best thing on TV (the beach ball monologue though... Crushed me). The goodbye scene between Laurie and Kevin was beautifully heartfelt, and Kevin Carroll also turned in his best work to date in John's big scene. I also love how Matt can continue to be an amazing character even when his role is essentially reduced to backseat commentary . Can't wait for the last two episodes!

Worst episode of the series so far imo.
Anyone know how long the finale is? I'm not sure I can make it through much more of this.

The final moment of this week's episode honestly would have served as a perfect ending to the series. Obviously this episode as it stands would not have functioned as a satisfying series finale, but I sort of expected that this season would ultimately boil down to that, "Now what?" moment. I loved it.
It took me a while to really appreciate this episode. I didn't realize it was supposed to be a comedy -- at least, the 'afterlife' parts that made-up 95% of the episode certainly were (I almost want to re-evaluate "International Assassin" through this new lens). A great deal of this episode felt like a self-parody of the show's own absurdism, from the inappropriate and bombastic soundtrack to the entire concept of the penis scanner. Even the whole "Chapter 1..." "Start on the last page. The ending is better." bit felt like the writers making an in-joke about the negative reception towards the first season.
More importantly, this episode was another fantastic showcase of The Leftovers' unprecedented creativity. It was nice to see them not repeat the "awaking in a hotel room" motif of the second season's afterlife, and instead decide to raise the stakes, in a sense, with a totally different type of storyline. I suppose the idea of Kevin coming face-to-face with his 'identical twin' was pretty on-the-nose, but that last sequence in the bunker totally got to me and has to be one of the single most satisfying revelations in this series' run. This entire show has been about characters looking for answers where there are none, and yet Kevin may have just discovered the answer to himself ... as sappy as that sounds. To top it off, that moment with Kevin and Patti standing under the arcs of the nuclear missiles was absolutely breathtaking.
If you'll allow me to a bit nit-picky with this one, I'll point out that I disliked the scene where they first prevent Kevin from drowning. It was just added in there for totally unnecessary exposition. It would've been way more satisfying if they had gotten out there when it was too late to stop him. Also, I hate to report that I still cannot stand Ann Dowd. Not that I was expecting her to grow on me...
Oh, but at least they *finally* brought back the magnificent original theme music. This must have been the first time I hadn't fast-forwarded through the opening credits since the end of season one. So that's always a plus.
