Universal Pictures and and NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock, in partnership with Blumhouse and Morgan Creek, have closed a reported $400 million-plus deal to purchase worldwide rights for a new Exorcist franchise that will see Ellen Burstyn reprise her role as the mother of a demon-possessed child. To be directed by David Gordon Green (Halloween), the franchise will star Hamilton‘s Leslie Odom Jr. as the father of a possessed child who seeks out the aid of Burstyn’s Exorcist character Chris MacNeil, mother of the possessed Regan MacNeil (Linda Blair). According to Universal, the franchise will encompass three films in total and is described as a “continuation,” rather than a remake, of the 1973 original. Read the rest...

The Fox series was so rad and shouldn't have been cancelled.

We knew David Gordon Green liked to work in threes even before these horror trilogies. It's a surprising and seemingly very committed career turn for him. I'm rarely against sequels-etc of things, and I'm not a huge fan of the original tho it's great... Very here for the return of Burstyn... She'll be 89 when she films this!

Oh he can fuck right off... Jason Blum is on a mission to remake every single classic horror movie on cheap budgets so he can increase his margins. LMAO. He makes a lot of crap so he has to make it up by using established brands.

I remember the day I heard he was making a Halloween film how exciting that sounded. Having seen it I see no reason to get excited about this. What a maddeningly all over the place director. Something tells me this will be closer to Your Highness than George Washington.

Networks need to figure out a better way to measure what people actual watch on tv because they keep greenlighting shows and giving the audiences no closure. I had hoped that Netflix was the answer but they appear to be worst than the Networks. The fact that Netflix cancels shows without a proper ending is a horrible business model. They will continue to lose subscribers if they continue this practice.

I think of a show like Rubicon, which is masterful and was cut down before its prime -- but someone could watch the whole first season and even though it never got to continue, it feels like a full experience, like a short story rather than a full novel.

Network tv needs to start doing more 13 episode shows. The only shows that needs 22 episodes are those law and order, csi type shows. They can't compete with binging so they need to have uninterrupted weekly shows. I would adopt a year round filming schedule rather than have everything film in August.

400 million dollars.
That is insane.
Everyone thought making a sequel to The Exorcist the first time around was a good idea. Instead of a sequel to The Exorcist, we got drunken Richard Burton raving about some Pazuzu bullshit. Then we got the third that starts off well but that ending in the original version ruined the movie. Neither version is satisfying but that theatrical ending is just laughable and ruins what came before it.
And then there are not one but two prequels because execs were unhappy with the first version filmed and wanted to lose millions more dollars I guess?
Anything beyond the first one was either a flop or a disaster. Unless investors are wanting to lose insane levels of money for a major tax write-off, I don't understand why anyone would invest that kind of money in a franchise that beyond the first one, run the gamut of flawed but right at the edge of a worthy sequel to terrible (the prequel) and the single worst film released by a major studio I have ever seen (do I even need to say which one?). The second broke even but is a notorious disaster. The rest flopped.
I do not have high hopes for this. I hope to be proven wrong, but I have a terrible feeling this is going to be a debacle.

Did you try the first season of the show yet? I did! I'm a little more than halfway done with S1. I'm liking it so far.

The trailer played before my packed audience for Oppenheimer and afterwards the whole crowd started murmuring with some laughing at it.
