Especially in comparison to his New Wave contemporaries - Godard, Truffaut, Varda, etc... I personally think his films are the best of the bunch.

Not even the most obscure angles of Film Twitter talk about him.
So, sadly yes.

Dreadfully underrated! This is a guy who made great films 5 decades in a row - spanning countries, languages, genres, themes, moods. The only reason he isn't as big as a Bergman or a Fellini is that he isn't distinct that way - he's not your typical auteur (the kind who makes the same film with slight variations over and over again). He's in control of his obsessions, and because his obsessions tend to be so life-affirming and so full of love for different ways of life (philosophical, intellectual, bohemian, bourgeois, French, American, rich, poor) you can't pin him down and that's not very trendy, I guess Love the guy - top 10 director and if I ever make a top 100, at least 4 of his movies would be there. Btw, has anyone seen his docs? I wanna see Calcutta dammit!

An all-time favorite of mine, so underrated. He's done so many widely different things

It's because he has neither a signature style or a signature thematic POV - He is not a Chabrol, Truffaut or Godard but in many was is not hemmed in by their qualities that exclude him. He is much closer to more workingman British directors like the lesser Stephen Frears and Mike Newell except that you know he's a kind of genius where they are merely really good but essentially workingman British directors

I don't think I'm qualified enough to comment because I've only seen a few of his films...I'll say this though - Elevator to the Gallows is one of my favorite French New Wave films (if it can be considered a French New Wave film - it arguably was a vital starting point), so he definitely deserves a lot of credit. He does have a vast, varied filmography, and to be fair, Murmur of the Heart, Au revoir Les enfants, and My Dinner with Andre are still named critics' favorites or influential works.

pacinoyes - I am not here for the Stephen Frears libel. yeah I realize that came out a bit wrong......... I'm a big Frears fan ........I just meant Malle could go from film to film and temper his style to create something profound - often a masterpiece - outside of the script where Frears is more beholden to his scripts..........but yeah love Frears often !

I think Malle is in important and intrinsic part of French cinema and I think he's regarded as such. Below the likes of Godard and Truffaut and Resnais but still very respected so I'll be the odd man out and say no. He's always been on my radar since he has so many projects in the Criterion Collection and I used to browse those lists religiously so I was aware of a lot of his filmography and now I've seen several of them. Au revoir les enfants gets the most love but the only one that really moved me was Dinner with Andre, and that had more to do with Gregory and Shawn's revolutionary script than anything else. I am missing Elevator to the Gallows so that's a big blindspot... hopefully I'll watch it soon

Maybe. But I have the feeling that he is pretty well regarded. Not on the same level as Truffaut or Godard, but he is usually mentioned just below these two. I think he wasn't as good stylistic as Truffaut and his best movies are well below Truffaut's best, but he made some pretty good films, especially with Elevator to the Gallows or Au revoir les enfants.
