I'm a little removed from this - I went to school a while ago (oh shut up) but just thought some students or teachers may have interesting POV ........ www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2021/07/09/biden-administration-cancels-1-5-billion-student-loan-debt/7917250002/The Department of Education canceled an additional $55.6 million in student loan debt for 1,800 student who were victims of a for-profit college fraud, bringing the total amount of canceled student loan debt by the Biden administration to $1.5 billion."Today’s announcement continues the U.S. Department of Education’s commitment to standing up for students whose colleges took advantage of them,” Miguel Cardona, the secretary of education, said in the department’s statement released Friday.

I don't see a problem with him cancelling debt for people with worthless degrees from profit schools. I do however, not support cancelling debt for everyone else. You can't go to an expensive school (by choice), get a degree, use that degree to get a better job than other people and then complain about the debt.
Someone needs to figure out why these schools are charging way too much now. 15 years ago, you could go to UCLA for about 9k per year, now it's going to cost you 20k. State schools in Cali went from approx 5k for the entire four years (tuition only) to 25k for the same degree. That's insane.

Just don’t go to college, not worth it especially during the internet age where if you’re smart you can learn whatever you want for little or no cost compared to a 4 year college degree, and no I’m not talking about those online universities either. You were always told you need a degree to get a job well now there’s too many ppl in college getting degrees and not enough jobs, just debt. This phenomenon happens every few centuries and the outcome is never pretty. Peter turchin warned about this

Peter turchin warned about this I don't think there's anything wrong with having one due to the fact that if you don't have one it limits the type of jobs you can apply on. However, I think the big issue here is that people are going to country club type of colleges rather than going the cheaper route. It also doesn't help that these colleges keep increasing the tuition because the average person takes out huge amounts of debt. The only way to solve this situation is to get these colleges in check. If you wipe out all student debt, it only helps people right now but it won't help people ten years from now. The cycle will just keep looping.

Obviously there are some things you definitely need to go to an actual college for like in your case, for example. Or if you’re gonna be a lawyer or an engineer, actually go to college for those. But this does not apply to most. Seems like most of these ppl who are now in debt got useless liberal arts degrees like gender studies or film or journalism or a business degree or (in my case) political science. Thankfully I’m not in any debt tho bc white privilege fucking rules. I do sympathize with the plight of those who do have student debt tho. Terrible that they were fed the empty promise of going to college to get a degree and then they’d be set

If you wipe out all student debt, it only helps people right now but it won't help people ten years from now. The cycle will just keep looping. Genuine question, as someone who never took a student loan. What is the collateral on these loans? What do you stand to lose if you default on the loan? Because I think it would be great if instead of just wiping out all the debt, everyone refuses to pay their loans and defaults on their debts to fuck over the entire system. And with the way the economy’s looking it may not be too long before ppl don’t even have to refuse to pay bc they simply won’t be able to keying in on your first point, yes but I don’t think it’s that simple. The way our whole system is set up, yes it’s safe to have a degree and have those options open for you. However if so many ppl are getting degrees and the same degrees at that (especially when everyone’s being told you absolutely have to go to college or you’ll never find work) those degrees lose their value and you end up in the situation where we are today, too many ppl getting degrees but not finding suitable work with those degrees. It’s kind of like money printing, the more of it that’s being printed and in circulation the less valuable it is. In the business world every few decades you’ll hear ppl at the top complaining about how there’s “too many MBAs” in the industry, and it’s usually a prelude to rough times ahead. Now apply that to every single degree the most important thing is that our current college situation actually indicates a wider more serious society-wide fundamental economic problem in our country, particularly among the working classes, but I’m sure you probably could’ve guessed that already

I wouldn't put myself in a mountain of debt before I turn 22. Its a real big hole to dig out of and it indicates a real lack of care about your future well being, living like there's no tomorrow when tomorrow is only 24 hours away.
You believe you can overcome any obstacle and youre confident in your abilities since you've only began and you feel its early in life, but its gonna be a lifetime struggle that can really drag you down.
Luckily I never had college debt which allows me to move and live anywhere I want at the snap of a finger because Im not constrained by economic difficulties. But I can't imagine if I didnt have the ability to do that. It'll really suck.

In addition, I worked part-time during college. As for the loans, well they are backed by the feds so if you default then your wages will be garnish and when you get older it will affect your social security payments. I think it is safe to have some sort of credential. It doesn't have to be a degree but you need something to separate yourself from the pack. A degree is nothing more than a weeding out system, it gives people a reason to say no to you. As long as you have the drive, you can learn anything.

And because of it they closed down the school and the students were left with a degree they couldn't use to gain employment. In this case, I agree with the forgiveness.

Not aware of Biden's student debt policy (I remember his promises but haven't kept up with what he's actually done). And my debt is thankfully low.

"just don't get in debt" lmoa. i don't even know what googol ass number the student debt total is up to now, it's going to economically fuck over tens of millions of people for decades if it's not seriously addressed, which it probably won't be as long as fascists like biden are king.

You're not going to be able to convince people to sign off on student loan debt forgiveness for the masses. The schools need to be held responsible for overcharging students and the students need to be held responsible for going to a school that is not within their budget. If you hit the reset button on the loans, all you are doing is delaying it until another group of people need the same assistance.

www.marketwatch.com/story/biden-says-hes-not-considering-cancellation-of-50000-in-student-debt-per-borrower-2022-04-28President Joe Biden on Thursday offered additional information on his administration's next steps with student loans, after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the New York Democrat, suggested the president was getting closer to cancelling up to $50,000 in student debt per borrower. "I am not considering $50,000 debt reduction, but I'm in the process of taking a hard look at whether or not there will be additional debt forgiveness, and I'll have an answer on that in the next couple of weeks," Biden told reporters. The White House in mid-April said it will extend its pause for student-loan repayments again before Aug. 31 -- or finalize a plan by then on canceling student debt. Biden on Thursday also played down a report showing a contraction in the U.S. gross domestic product, saying "no one is predicting a recession," though "some are predicting there may be a recession in 2023."

Probably other profit school cancellations. I hope he revamps the public service forgiveness program.
