I guess we don’t have a thread for this year, or I’m blind.

Just saw someone comment that this must mean Next Goal Wins is next year. Weird as I thought it was completed for awhile now. Mmm.

Benediction too, a new Terence Davies film is always worthy of interest.

'Canadian Premiere' means that The Electrical Life of Louis Wain is going to Telluride too. Could be something to keep an eye on.

The Eyes Tammy Faye is premiering at TIFF, but it looks like it won't be at Telluride.

Productions not yet confirmed as heading to TIFF – though this could change in coming weeks – include Guillermo del Toro’s Toronto-shot Nightmare Alley, Pablo Larrain’s Princess Diana biopic Spencer, Andrew Dominik’s Marilyn Monroe reimagining Blonde, Jane Campion’s drama The Power of the Dog, Joel Coen’s The Tragedy of Macbeth, Michel Franco’s Driftwood, and Titane, a body-horror thriller from Julia Ducournau, who made history this past weekend when she became just the second female filmmaker ever to win the Palme d’Or, the Cannes Film Festival’s top prize.
More films will be announced July 28 (for the Contemporary World Cinema, Discovery, TIFF Docs, Midnight Madness, Primetime and Wavelength programs) and Aug. 11 (Short Cuts and Platform programs). Single tickets for in-person and digital screenings go on sale Sept. 4 for TIFF members, and Sept. 6 to the public.www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/film/tiff/article-tiff-2021-films-starring-amy-adams-riz-ahmed-and-clifford-the-big-red/

I think they’re waiting for the Venice announcement before adding some of these titles.

I’ve lost track on what the last thing I read/posted about The Humans was. It is going to TIFF, and I’m not sure if someone at another forum said it wasn’t coming out this year right after Erik said it was at this point. Either way, it does feel correct that this isn’t a big priority for A24 which seems somewhat strange to me because the supporting categories are still wide open, and the source material was praised so much.
Not that things can’t change later, but maybe it didn’t translate well, or it’s just another flub from A24.

I really don't understand A24 - and I like a lot that comes from them - I mean Saint Maud, fnck yeah ............ but either The Tragedy of Macbeth is really really great and they know they can't handle multiple campaigns or it's something wackadoodle with them.......because The Humans has Tony winning roles and a director adapting his play - the exact same scenario as The Father (except in Support) - this should be a no brainer unless it's a total botch............speaking of which where is their push for C'mom, C'mon which is allegedly (supposedly) great and isn't anywhere at all.............Telluride? It's almost like they encourage being puzzled in awards season ............and I am quite puzzled all by myself, thankyouverymuch

Can't remember which thread, though. May be the BP one.

No King Richard?? Is it premiering at any festival anyway (maybe AFI)??
Btw I think The Humans, despite not being a Telluride player, has great potential to be the People's Choice award winner, (alongside The Power of The Dog and Belfast).

I think The Worst Person in the World could be a dark horse for the prize tbh.

No King Richard?? Is it premiering at any festival anyway (maybe AFI)?? King Richard isn't the kind of movie that needs a festival premiere. I don't think The Blindside got one, and that nabbed Sandra Bullock the Best Actress Oscar. It's Will Smith in a heartwarming sports biopic about well known figures. Super mainstream stuff. Pre-Covid era, that film would probably be a guaranteed 100 million dollar + box office grosser. It may still do huge numbers, but the box office still hasn't recovered to what it was, so who knows how it'll play out.

Yeah, I think if Smith is going to be competitive for the win he'll need the film to get a BP nod, so it will be interesting to see how WB handle both King Richard and Dune (and possibly Cry Macho).
I'd say his two biggest competitors right now are Cumberbatch and Cooper, and their films are fairly likely to get BP nods.

The Toronto International Film Festival has revealed that Jessica Chastain, star and producer of “The Eyes Of Tammy Faye,” will receive the Tribute Actor Award at the festival’s 46th edition this year.
“Jessica has brought to life such strong and inspiring roles for women, from the films that have screened at TIFF such as ‘The Debt,’ ‘Take Shelter,’ ‘The Martian,’ ‘Crimson Peak’ and ‘Molly’s Game,’ to the upcoming world premiere of ‘The Eyes of Tammy Faye’ at the Festival – she is one of the most respected actors of her generation,” said Joana Vicente, executive director and co-head of TIFF. “Her recent portrayal of Tammy Faye Bakker is a testament to her exceptional onscreen presence and talent.” variety.com/2021/film/news/jessica-chastain-toronto-film-festival-tribute-actor-award-1235035029/

Phoenix and Hopkins were the TIFF Actor Tribute recipients the last two years and both went on to win the Oscar. Will Cumberbatch pull off a hat trick?
