I was looking at some of the stacked casts this year (Don't Look Up, Canterbury Glass, The French Dispatch), and I wondered which movie had the cast with the most Oscar nominations/wins between them. Of the movies this year, it was Don't Look Up (thanks to Streep and her gazillion nominations), and then I began to wonder which movie held that distinction overall. From some of the movies I looked up, here are the top ones:
1. The Player (1992) Nominations: 48 Wins: 13
2. How the West Was Won (1962) Nominations: 48 (including 9 from voice-only cast member Spencer Tracy) Wins: 10 (including 2 from voice-only cast member Spencer Tracy)
3. Don't Look Up (2021) Nominations: 42 Wins: 8
4. Heartburn (1986) Nominations: 41 Wins: 10
5. Julia (1977) Nominations: 41 Wins: 9
6. Marvin's Room (1996) Nominations: 39 Wins: 7
7. The House of the Spirits (1993) Nominations: 39 Wins: 5
8. Hamlet (1996) Nominations: 38 Wins: 9
9. A Bridge Too Far (1977) Nominations: 38 Wins: 9
10. Postcards from the Edge (1990) Nominations: 38 Wins: 7
11. The Hours (2002) Nominations: 38 Wins: 5
Any corrections to my numbers are welcome, because I very well may have made some mistakes. Considering only acting nominations/wins from credited cast members, are there any other movies that you can think of that would beat this top 10 in terms of nominations?

I assume you are counting total nominations as of 2021 and not, say, at the time of when the films came out? I've got a few possibilities in the mix but I'm verifying that criteria first.

Yep, total career nominations. So the totals will likely continue to increase, particularly for the more recent movies on the list like Don't Look Up, Marvin's Room, Hamlet, and The Hours.

Meryl Streep ensembles should come with an asterisk lol
Mars Attacks was the first to come to mind and I'm curious how it stacks against yours: Jack Nicholson- 12/3 Glenn Close- 8/0 Annette Bening- 4/0 Natalie Portman- 3/1 Rod Steiger- 3/0 Sylvia Sidney- 1/0 Paul Winfield- 1/0
That's 32 nominations and 4 wins, not bad for an alien invasion B-movie.

I imagine a lot of those large ensemble epics of the '50s and '60s (i.e. Around the World in 80 Days, The Greatest Story Ever Told) would be up there. It's late where I'm at or I'd figure out the stats now.

By my count: The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965) Nominations: 34 Wins: 9 Around the World in 80 Days (1956) Nominations: 29 Wins: 8 That's 32 nominations and 4 wins, not bad for an alien invasion B-movie. I have always found it surprising how Tim Burton was able to assemble that cast for that movie.

Doubt has 35, which is impressive considering how small the cast is.

Your top 10 is going to be tough to crack but I'm determined to find something over 38.
American Hustle: 27 nominations / 4 wins Christian Bale- 4/1 Amy Adams- 6/0 Bradley Cooper- 4/0 Jennifer Lawrence- 4/1 Robert De Niro- 7/2 Jeremy Renner- 2/0

Magnolia: 20 nominations / 4 wins, spread out over 8 actors. Which ensembles have the most individuals with nominations?
Julianne Moore: 5/1 Philip Seymour Hoffman: 4/1 Jason Robards: 3/2 Tom Cruise: 3/0 Melinda Dillon: 2/0 John C. Reilly: 1/0 William H. Macy: 1/0 Felicity Huffman: 1/0
Shocked to find out Alfred Molina has never been nominated!

I'm bored and I've never seen it so let's see:
Avengers: Endgame - 37 nominations and 7 wins from 20 actors seems to put it just outside the top 10 Bradley Cooper- 4/0 William Hurt- 4/1 Natalie Portman- 3/1 Marisa Tomei- 3/1 Mark Ruffalo- 3/0 Michelle Pfeiffer- 3/0 RDJ- 2/0 Scarjo- 2/0 Jeremy Renner- 2/0 Michael Douglas- 1/1 Brie Larson- 1/1 Gwyneth Paltrow- 1/1 Tilda Swinton- 1/1 Samuel L. Jackson- 1/0 Don Cheadle- 1/0 Josh Brolin- 1/0 Chadwick Boseman- 1/0 Robert Redford- 1/0 Benedict Cumberbatch- 1/0 Angela Bassett- 1/0
Impressive ensemble, curious how much screentime they each get. I'm guessing less than a minute each on average?

On an Avengers-related note, I was curious to see if there were any MCU films that didn't have at least one Oscar winner, and it looks like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the only one. Technically, Captain America: The Winter Soldier would count as well if we stuck to just acting winners, but Robert Redford does have an Oscar.

All the King's Men (2006 remake). I only remember this because it was at the theater I worked at for 2 weeks, but I also remember the cast being the big part of the trailer.
Kate Winslet: 7/1 Anthony Hopkins: 6/2 Sean Penn: 5/2 Mark Ruffalo: 3/0 Jude Law: 2/0 Patricia Clarkson: 1/0 Jackie Earle Haley: 1/0 Frederic Forrest: 1/0
26/5
Okay, not as many, but I think this has to be the best example of advertising a cast with multiple Oscar winners and nominees and a film flopping.

The Pledge (2001) is 28/6.
Should be 30+ since Harry Dean Stanton APPARENTLY has NEVER been nominated. That’s an atrocious oversight.

Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn have 21 nominations and 6 wins between them, so I figured one of their many movies together might be up there. Nope. The best is Guess Who's Coming to Dinner with 26 nominations and 7 wins.
But I did find a new addition to the top 10:
Julia (1977) Nominations: 41 Wins: 9

When will Don’t Look Up hit 50? If I were Vegas I’d put the over/under at 6.5 years
