Yikes - Nadal and Osaka already drop out..........defending ladies champ battling injuries : There are fresh concerns about Simona Halep's participation at Wimbledon after the World No.3 announced her withdrawal from next week's lead-up tournament in Bad Homburg.
Halep announced her return 10 days ago after accepting a wildcard for Bad Homburg, but now won't play there.
At the last ceremony with runner-up Serena Williams:

If Serena doesn't win this, I think that is the end of her chances of equaling that record. If she does, perhaps that can spur her on to US Open success. I'd like to see her finish with the record.
Kinda hard to look past Djokovic in the mens.

Kinda hard to look past Djokovic in the mens. Serena already has the open era record. I'm not going to give Court credit for winning a million Australian Opens back when almost no one outside Australia played there.

Agreed, but at the same time I'd really like that stat taken from her anyway.

That third set from Murray yesterday was more bonkers than the Spain and France football matches combined.

Federer struck luck today - he lost two sets to unseeded Adrian Mannarino who retired in the 5th set to injury. Fed to 2nd Rd and better shape up!

I'd give it to Serena given her extreme longevity and the competition she faced. The 2000's and early 10's were just a much deeper era for women's tennis than the 80's and 90's. Lots of very good players who would have even better legacies if Serena hadn't hogged all the slams. She had to face two top ten players of all time in Venus and Justine Henin plus two more top 15 with Sharapova and Martina Hingis. Graf just had to face old Navratilova and Evert and then Seles who owned her until she got stabbed. That 90's period where Graf really dominated was kind of a wasteland for women's tennis, kind of like it it right now, a truly great player in her prime could be cleaning up. I'd put Evert and Navratilova ahead of Graf as well for similar reasons. Serena's also probably the most complete woman's player there's ever been too just in terms of her athleticism and lack of weaknesses. Hard to imagine anyone getting the better of her for a sustained period in her prime.

Djoko in straight sets today......rolling along .......like a robot, slightly inhuman ...... I'm really not sure what the argument there was since he'd only tied the slams record and still trailed Fed at things like weeks at no. 1 and total titles. Just seemed like recency bias. I don't believe in ranking on projection, just rank them as if their careers ended now.

In general it's one of the most baffling arguments to me I've ever seen on MAR - and that includes actors, directors, quarterbacks, politics .........anything ...........it somehow goes back to the last days of IMDB too - because it usually boiled down to the he won on clay a ridiculously dominant "13 times" which is actually an argument AGAINST him being THE GOAT in general ........it was like a weird mass delusion & juxtaposition of the GOAT on clay and the GOAT period.............incredibly lazy argument I'm just having fun though busting balls about it a bit.......I have a brand to uphold after all .......though on some level I'm setting myself up - if anyone can find a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory it's Djoko ..........

Federer in 4 sets and really efficient ....... into the round of 16 today.....it will be interesting if the final is Federer-Djoko (no jinx) because already the crowd has been a bit cool to Djoko and will be overwhelming for Federer obviously.....

If Federer reaches the final this year it would surely tell a lot about the dire state of the tour right now. Sure, he is obviously a fantastic player, but he's almost 40 years old and barely played a match in 18 months. Interesting days indeed, as history probably will be made (with Djoko winning his twentieth slam).

Djoko in straight sets and Federer dropped the first set ..........I think if Federer is going to win he needs to end it in 4 .......a 5th set against a younger ranked player (Hurkacz) might be too much ......although Hurkacz is coming off a 5 set match himself

Hurkacz was the much better player today. Federer, after losing the second set tiebreak, which he should have won (made some really horrible misses on easy points), knew he was finished. In the third set Federed knew he couldn't win the match, so he didn't even try. Clear tanking job to finish the match as quickly as possible. If this is Federer's last Grand Slam performance then it's a pretty sad way to go. But reaching the quaterfinals is definitely a success, since he was way below average the whole tournament. Djokovic is going to reach his 20th slam and deservingly so, since he has been by far the best player this tournament. I can't see anyone defeating him.

I mean, does this really surprise anyone? Federer really hasn't been playing that well this tournament, and he can barely play a rally anymore. His footwork stepping around the backhand and getting out to the corners just isn't there at this point, whether that is due to him not being fully match sharp after the injuries or if it's just age finally catching up with him I guess we will see, but it is not looking good.
