I know Adam Driver is all the rage these days, but I remember when Michael Fassbender had similar hype in the mid-2010s when he was on a hot streak with 12 out of his last 13 movies being certified fresh on RT, and he was generating a lot of acclaim for them. And then Assassin's Creed happened, Trespass Against Us happened, The Snowman happened, and the hype died a swift death. But I think they're similarly acclaimed actors, and it remains to be seen if Driver can succeed where Fassbender failed.
Even in terms of major awards, they are remarkably similar:
Fassbender: 2 Oscar nominations 3 BAFTA nominations 2 SAG nominations 3 Golden Globe nominations 1 Venice win 2 LAFCA wins
Driver: 2 Oscar nominations 2 BAFTA nominations 2 SAG nominations 2 Golden Globe nominations 1 Venice win 1 LAFCA win
That leads me to the questions. Who do you think:
1. Is the better actor? 2. Has the better filmography? 3. Has the better career? 4. Was the bigger star, at their peak? 5. Is more respected?

1. Is the better actor? I think Driver is more versatile and has more range. Fassbender's not very good at playing raw, intense characters -- it feels too much like posturing. He's excellent at playing cool, demure types, though.
2. Has the better filmography? Driver, most def.
3. Has the better career? So far, Driver. Fassbender seems to have really hit a wall after 2016, and he's had a tough time gaining his footing again. Meanwhile, Driver's career since his breakout has been meteoric and shows no real sign of slowing down. Driver's career has been textbook on what an actor should be doing.
4. Was the bigger star, at their peak? Fassbender at his peak was an IMDb darling, and while I think Driver's certainly got muscle and cred, I feel like Fassbender circa 2011/12 was a phenomenon. But I guess if Driver hangs dong in something, we'll see.
5. Is more respected? I think people probably respect Driver's work ethic and his career choices more, whereas I feel that Fassbender's last half-decade hasn't really helped him.

Driver has been a net negative outside of Girls, in my opinion. I don't get him, I don't get why some people overvalue his cameos in great directors' works, and I certainly don't see him as a great talent. Fassbender has brutally mismanaged his career, but has been very impressive in film at times (Hunger, Inglourious, Fish Tank, Steve Jobs, 12 Years a Slave, etc.). I think Driver is a better actor than Tom Hardy on an average day, but I understand his acclaim even less, given his absolute inability to convincingly play anybody but weird goofs.

1. Fassbender easily for me. His Steve Jobs and 12 Years a Slave performances are borderline all time tier stuff and he was always at least solid in the constant string of roles he had in the early 10's, a great accomplishment given the crazy workload. I've never really found Driver better than alright in a movie tbh.
2. Again, easily Fassbender. Basterds, the 2011 Jane Eyre, 12 Years a Slave, Steve Jobs, and so forth. I guess Driver's got supporting roles in Silence and Inside Llewyn Davis but Fassbender's just made way more good movies.
3. At the moment, certainly Driver, who seems to have reached that Gosling/Gyllenhaal tier. Fassbender really seems to have hit the wall at the moment and is barely even in anything. Don't know if he overworked himself earlier and wants to take a break to spend quality time with Alicia Vikander or what. Hollywood really wanted to turn him into a leading man when he should have been a character actor.
4. Again, Driver at the moment is bigger than Fassbender ever was. He had a lot of internet/IMDB hype but I don't think that translated to ID with the GP. I get the feeling most people who weren't big movie fans would have just recognized him from X-Men but not really known who he was. Star Wars and Girls just gives Driver a much bigger pop culture footprint.
5. I'll say Driver again. Fassbender had his internet cult following but Driver's nominated performances in Blackklansman and Marriage Story are just a lot more mainstream and widely seen. He also gets a lot of props for his reputation on stage as well.

1. Driver has way more range imo and a greater wealth of emotionality to pool from. Fassbender I always liked a good bit, but never thought of him as a generational talent.
2. I'd rather watch Driver's movies. Peak for peak they're close, though I'd still rather watch Star Wars, Silence, and Marriage Story over Inglourious Basterds, Shame, and 12 Years a Slave. Once you get into the mid-tier or lesser parts of their filmographies, though, Driver's stuff is way more enjoyable to watch.
3. Driver, not a contest.
4. Driver, by far just by virtue of being the main Star Wars villain for this generation. Fassbender was always a film buff's darling at best, not someone they'd ask to host SNL.
5. Driver. Dude's been a constant workaholic, shown willingness to do everything from stage work to Jim Jarmusch to franchise fare, and been nominated for an Emmy, Tony, and Oscar. If Fassbender is commanding the same respect, his career right now is not showing it.

1. Is the better actor?
Fassbender
2. Has the better filmography?
Hmmm. Prob Driver slightly. Small roles in Lincoln and Llewelyn Davis really helps him.
3. Has the better career?
I think Fassbender has a major resurgence with leading Fincher’s next. Absolutely huge for him.
4. Was the bigger star, at their peak?
Driver, just because of Star Wars.
5. Is more respected?
Still say Fassbender overall. Driver is hotter right now but overall body of work I think Fassbender is more respected.

1. Driver 2. Driver 3. Driver 4. Driver 5. Driver
Weirdly enough i consider Driver the better and more versatile actor overall, but at the same time in terms of highs, i think Fassbender in Shame is still better than anything Driver did (i may be wrong, i may have to rewatch Paterson, Silence, and Marriage Story), but i don't think we have seen yet Driver true highs yet (i'll wait to see Annette, House of Gucci, and White Noise).
Still, Fassbender (Hardy too in terms of critical acclaim) completely faded after 2015, and I don't think Waititi's Next Goal Wins will be the right vehicle for a critical comeback. We'll see what happens with the Fincher project.

Driver .........for all except actor atm because Fassbender has hit higher peaks to me ....but:
I say this all the time and I know people are sick of it but Driver's slate of movies from 2021-2022 are as ambitious as any I can think of for an American actor - ever - across a comparable period:
5 films, in 5 genres, and playing across cultures in two - he plays a Frenchman, an Italian - and across period for at least 2 of those and maybe more (Gucci, Last Duel, Annette, 65, White Noise).
Now all 5 could tank but that would be quite a collapse ....and you would think that the upside of those has room for some great work from him too, not just that he's "in" those movies.

The more I think about it, the more it seems like Fassbender occupied the same niche that Driver now does. I've just learned about this, and it looks like Fassbender was offered the role of Kylo Ren which he passed because he was busy doing something else: I wonder how their careers would look today if Fassbender had played Kylo Ren instead of Driver. Would Fassbender be playing some of roles Driver is playing these days?

To be honest I am not really a big fan of either one that much but they both have had their moments over the years.
IMO Fassbender is a flat out better actor. overall He was so suave/cool in his limited role in The Inglorious Bastards during that intense scene at the pub. Also thought he was solid as a younger Magneto in those X-Men films and imo was the best thing about Prometheus / Alien : Covenant (that flute scene was fucking great!). He's also been pretty damn good (or at least decent ) in a number of indie films over the years Fish Tank, Hunger and Frank for example)
He has made quite a few bonehead career moves lately . Assassin's Creed was a total misfire and he should have never taken that role BUT I think he is gonna have a pretty big come back to A-List status. He is going to be the lead actor in David fucking Fincher's next film (The Killer). That is flat out HUGE for Fassbender's acting career. Let's hope he makes the most of it.
As for Driver, I have been on record as stating that he was flat out AWFUL in those Star Wars films . Cringeworthy in every single one of them as the whiny emo Darth Vader wannabe. He should have been nominated for at least a Razzie in one of those films.

imo was the best thing about Prometheus / Alien : Covenant (that flute scene was fucking great!). Forgot about that in my post because Prometheus was so blah but he was terrific as David, one of the best live action robot performances up there with Brent Spiner on Star Trek TNG. Wouldn't have minded a supporting actor nod at all. That's another feather in his cap. He always gave 100% in that period where he constantly worked, it was nuts and as I said above is a huge achievement.
