Not exactly great for In The Heights, but WOM seems strong enough, and with the lack of direct competition in the coming week, I could see it holding rather well.

Much lower than I was expecting - thought this was going to cross $20m quite easily.

I wonder if the fact, that it's already on HBO Max hurt the film a little bit, though. These simultaneous releases always have that sort of problem.

A lot of people like Hamilton but I don't think Miranda himself is a big a draw as people thought.

Much lower than I was expecting - thought this was going to cross $20m quite easily. I thought so too. I kept doubting it’s Best Picture chances because I did think there was too much competition this year even with 10 slots, but it finally got a handful of perfect scores and seemed destined to do well at the box office after the last few hopeful weeks where it seemed people were going to the movies again, so I accepted it was in. Obviously I jinxed it lol. Seriously though I wished it had done better, but I guess the cast being mostly unknown as well as many people not knowing about the musical like they would Hamilton or Cats also hurt it. I guess it could still be nominated for Best Ensemble at SAG, although that’s still not a guarantee that it can be nominated for Best Picture. This probably would have got a lot of Globe nominations and maybe even Anthony Ramos would have won, so it’s going to be really interesting to see how a Globe-less year plays out. Musicals in general will really be hurt except I think West Side Story which is already well known and has Spielberg directing and maybe Annette because I see that as something critics and cinephiles will generally love/like, but outside of that it probably will be too weird.

In The Heights sounds and looks great, but unfortunately it strikes me as one of those kinds of big Broadway niche deals, where it's a popular with a particular crowd in NYC or L.A., but really doesn't expand beyond the big cities, which is a shame. I doubt the box office will severely weaken its best picture nomination chances, but if it gets in, it's definitely in the lower end of the top 10. At this point I expect Spielberg's West Side Story to do much better, because of its release date, and the fact that it's a way more famous story.

Right now the plan appears to be same day release with a month to see window on HBO Max. I wonder what would happen if they delay the HBO Max release for two weeks?

Really poor for both movies. I honestly wonder if the last few weeks were more of a mirage, cause we're back to ho-hum box office again. AGP2 could go back to being #1.

Some people have suggested that since kids can't get vaccinated yet their parents aren't taking them to the movies which would explain the Peter Rabbit result. I just don't think there was as much excitement for In the Heights as some people thought, pandemic or no. The big blockbusters should do fine.
