I guess I'll give a slight edge to Tom.
I think they're both very good, but neither is great for me (yet). I'd say Jake has the best work of the two, but Tom is more consistent, so he gets the vote by a hair.

Given how much this board creams their jeans over guys being "consistent" - which matters about as much to me as being a good dresser (or something) - I guess Gyllenhaal will win this poll - but I pretty much know how JG will play everything - before he plays it........and if you think Matt Damon is boring (he kinda is) well, so is JG's "give the people EXACTLY what they expect" routine Hardy at least has a streak of unpredictability to him and........ and you - I mean "I" don't judge actors by what misses but what sticks.......I'd rather watch Hardy try to be great and strike out wildly than watch JG be boringly solid and never get close to great tbh...... Nightcrawler is what makes JG a thing - not Prisoners or anything else - can he get to Nightcrawler again, I dunno...... but he's been around a loooooooooooooong time .....maybe his 40s will surprise me .....but patiently waiting for some evidence .......

Also, what are your thoughts on him in Enemy? This is my Sep 26, 2018 review of Enemy that I posted on MAR ........I was so young and innocent in 2018.......people often referred to me as that "interesting and charming young man" back then It's a 6.5-7.0 or so. The ending of this film is a Don't Look Now level wtf was that? - and it will prove as divisive as that one.
Eventually you have to guess what is happening on a scene by scene basis and then rationalize it or contextualize it by how much you're able to piece together and it becomes either a movie you hate because you are working hard for nothing or a movie you love because it confirms how smart you like to think you are.
One of Gyllenhaal's best turns though (and he gets a lot of undeserved praise for some other roles imo) but in this one he's really putting a lot of thought in how to go about shaping the character. One of his best scenes is a small one - where he is "acting" out how he's going to be when the characters meet and there's a whole level of terror and nervous excitement or fear right under the surface.

Not really a huge fan of either but I guess Hardy. Not a lot of versatility but he is genuinely good at straightforward tough guy stuff. Jake is meh personified. He's fine but he's one of those guys who wouldn't have a career if not for his looks and family connections.
To partially agree with Pacinoyes, I don't won't to hear all you guys saying Matt Damon is boring praising Gyllenhaal as if he isn't.

Jake Gyllenhaal. It's really not close for me. I think Tom Hardy can be downright awful (The Dark Knight Rises, Peaky Blinders...).

Jake for me, easily. I find Hardy soulless and artificial in almost everything he's done outside of maybe Locke, TTSS, and moments of Peaky Blinders. He has major trouble summoning real emotion, so resorts to a hamminess I don't even find entertaining. Jake's stumbled quite a bit in recent years, but his work in October Sky/Donnie Darko/Nightcrawler/Love and Other Drugs/Brothers/etc. puts Tom Hardy's take on acting to shame.

This one is a tough choice for me. Both are quite talented when they are used right. Gyllenhaal is very good at playing geeks or weirdos (as shown in Zodiac , Donnie Darko or Nightcrawler) but man he has also been pretty cringeworthy in a number of big time roles. I thought he was Razzie worthy in both Prince of Persia and Southpaw. I didn't buy him as a tough guy for a second. Also thought his performances in Okja and that Spiderman sequel were beyond goofy to take seriously. As for Hardy, he isn't without his faults (Couldn't even finish Capone and am still baffled as to why he would work with that crackhead director lol and then of course there is Venom which I thought was really bad. _but imo he has the superior performances (and it should be noted that he got a late start in getting any sort of leading roles. He was a tour de force in Bronson, pretty damn exceptional / solid in a number of Christopher Nolan films but his most impressive performance (or at least my favorite) is in Locke. I was totally blown away by his performance in that little film. Didn't know a single thing about it before viewing it and its literally Tom Hardy driving around in his car taking phone calls or calling other people. It was a total one man show and Hardy absolutely crushed it. That is not an easy thing to do and very few actors can pull that off. Hardy gets my vote.

Gyllenhaal quite easily for me.
Versatile, talented and controlled performer. Takes risks that don't always pay off, but it never feels indulgent with him.
Hardy has a lot of presence, but if it wasn't for his looks and or "sex appeal", he wouldn't get away with half the self-indulgent shit he does (I'm still trying to wipe the memory of Capone from my neural cortex). Honestly think like a lot of actors before him (ie Mickey Rourke) he read his own press declaring him the second coming of Marlon Brando and leaned into that, to continually diminishing results. He's gone from a fresh and exciting performer to one who flirts with self-parody any time he turns up (it doesn't help that his big paycheck franchise role in Venom plays into all Hardy's excessive self-parodying tendencies).

Gyllenhaal for me. I don’t mind Hardy at all, and find his mannerisms to sometimes be quite entertaining, but he lurched so hard into parody recently, that sometimes it's hard to take him seriously at all. I don't have that same sort of problem with Gyllenhaal, who can convoy both crazy and menacing quite effectively.

guess Gyllenhaal will win this poll - but I pretty much know how JG will play everything - before he plays it........ I would say that for DiCaprio too - he approaches a lot of his roles as characters with extreme capabilities to express emotions... with a similar high level of intensity, although that doesn't discredit how effective most of his performances are. With JG I still see variations in performances, from Prisoners, Nightcrawler, Enemy to Okja or his rom coms.

Very very close. I've cheated by not choosing, love both. Neither, however, have reached the highs expected of them yet, imho.

I've gone through periods where I undervalued them but they've both been great. I'm a lot more into Gyllenhaal these days though, and Hardy taking roles like Venom and Capone (back-to-back!) isn't winning him any points. Hardy's peak was definitely 2014 (Locke, The Drop) through 2015 (The Revenant) and he hasn't touched those heights again [yet]. Those 2014 perfs were a wonderful inverse to his more scenery chewing stuff like in Bronson.
Gyllenhaal chews a lot of scenery too, I just enjoy him more. He was awful in Okja but he proved in Velvet Buzzsaw that he could do that type of camp well in the right context. And the guy just has just been churning out quality dramatic work longer, all the way back to the late 90s. From Brokeback to Zodiac to End of Watch, Prisoners, Nightcrawler, Stronger... he's just better.
