Same thing I always say - from 1967-1988 Dustin Hoffman stands with DePac/Nicholson in American acting history .........afterwards, they all surpassed him and maybe Hackman did too ( maybe) but he's 4th or 5th on the post-Brando American list to me...... Hopkins has his run late in life and he is obviously world class......he is, to me, 3rd post-Olivier in UK acting history behind Finney and DDL...... Like I always say it's hard for me personally to vote for Burton/Washington/Clift/Hopkins/Duvall/DDL - in head to head battles with other actors at their level when they all lack almost any big time comic achievements .......and when Hoffman has 2 all-time comedies. Side note - they almost co-starred in 2010 in The Song of Names - later made with Tim Roth and Clive Owen - Hoffman had an unbelievable string of bad luck post-1988 with movies falling through at the last minute

I mean, Hoffman is my all time #4 and Hopkins my #5!!! It's THAT hard!
Well, I always thought Dusty is a bit better so I'll stick with him.

My initial reaction was, "weird comparison", but then I looked up their respective DOBs and it took me a moment to compute the fact that they're exact same sage.
I think Hoffman has a slightly bigger wheelhouse. He's fallen off since the 90s, but not many actors can match the peaks he realized in the 60s and 70s.
