The Tree of Wooden Clogs I understand why it is not many people's cup of tea but it was such an entrancing film experience for me.

I thought Day For Night had more fans. Romero and Rafelson FYI: I was the one who ranked it #7. It's an absolute MASTERPIECE!! 😍 Great cast & fantastically sharp script, immensely entertaining from beginning to end. My personal favorite foreign film of the decade, and definitely the greatest film EVER made about making a film. Glad it made the list, but it should be waaaaay higher.

Punishment Park (1971) Director: Peter Watkins 40 points from 2 ballots Highest Placement: #4 on 1 ballot
Not on my list but the classic example of a movie that plays differently depending on what era and political climate you see it in ......suggests our impression of movies is always changing and unresolved though it's the exact same movie itself.....a must see nowadays

Another FYI: I was the one who ranked Animal House #8. Not just the 2nd funniest film of the decade, but my 3rd favorite comedy of ALL-TIME.
Belushi and John Vernon should BOTH have gotten supporting actor nods that year. Especially the latter, who's a strong candidate for all-time Greatest Comedy Villain.

Seems a fair placement for The French Connection. It's a very good film, but a great it is not.

I think we all have a pretty good guess of what no. 1 is with the big margin it won by. I find the trailer for El Topo really funny for some reason with the monotone 70's trailer announcer guy trying to explain the movie to you.

Last Tango in Paris seems right at #77. Not a huge fan, the shock value got old a while ago, but Brando is magnificent.

Love and Death and The Ascent nearly made my list, very happy they made the cut. Love and Death in particular is one of Woody's best, endlessly entertaining, superbly written and the acting is fantastic.

I agree with Johnny about French Connection. Very good film, but I'm glad it didn't rank higher. It's become more than a tad overrated, especially for such an amazing decade.
Ditto for Woman Under the Influence, though Rowlands' remarkable work is Top 10 of the Decade for Acting. But as a film, it's far from perfect. Also, there is something very wrong and baffling about it making the list while Opening Night, an absolute MASTERPIECE by the same director with a Rowlands tour-de-force that is every bit as extraordinary as her Woman Under work, missed the cut. Just WRONG.
Also, Last Tango should be WAAAAAY higher on this list. Brilliant, breathtaking, unforgettable film with probably the best work of Brando's GOAT career. Is it "wokeism"?? I hope not. Either way: SHAME!

So I just arrived, and WOW what a list so far. I haven't seen a great deal of these, which makes me excited, based on the quality of what is here. I think my only votes so far have been Sleuth and Fiddler on the Roof (I was probably the high votes for both). But there are so many excellent films that missed my cut that are showing here. I'm cool with this right now.

Mirror should be a lot higher than that, guys. Be more sophisticated. I was gonna watch Mirror, but the subtitle quality from Kino is crap. They made parts nearly unwatchable. I just decided to wait it out until Criterion releases it.

Only one of these I've seen is Halloween, which is... fine. It is clearly influential, I just didn't click with it personally.
