Which of these Gen X auteurs with truly signature styles do you personally prefer? Together in Paris...

Coppola, who's more consistent and I prefer her best films over Anderson's bests.

I enjoy Coppola's grappling with overpriviledged white people (Bling Ring is underrated) but Marie Antoinette is the only one I've loved. Easily Wes for me

I think LiT is Coppola's only great film, but I've at least liked just about everything else she's done.
Aside from Rushmore, I've never understood the appeal of Wes Anderson. Probably the most prominent major filmmaker where I seem to be way in the minority in my opinion of him.

I'm a big fan of Marie Antoinette, and quite like The Virgin Suicides and Somewhere. But the rest of Sofia's filmography has been overrated (LiT) or lousy. So Wes Anderson; the only film of his I found disappointing was The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Wes, but maybe I'm not being fair as I've admittedly seen far less of Coppola's work than Anderson's.

Virgin Suicides promised a slightly different filmmaker... it's a pretty ambitious first-time film, layered, daring. I don't wanna say duller but she's sort of tapered as a filmmaker lately - Somewhere is a bore, The Beguiled a bland remake, On the Rocks a therapy-session feel of a first time effort. But other than those.... Lost in Translation is great, Marie Antoinette is excellently designed, and Bling Ring is underrated.....I'm a fan!
but Wes is more unique and has wilder reference points that I like.... even tho he often wades right before self parody, he still has a remarkably creative eye (love the deep focus) and brings you memorably along, and actors clearly love him. I wish he'd dig deeper and straw out his movies less but then that's not him. Anyone else see that behind the scenes of Fantastic Fox... Wes rolling around in the grass, playfully yelling at Meryl Streep and giving Bill Murray line readings.....love seeing committed goofery.

Wes has 4 masterpieces (Rushmore, Royal Tenebaums, Darjeeling Limited, Grand Budapest) to one for Coppola (Lost in Translation) so he takes it by default.
Plus, none of Wes's features are bad while Coppola's lesser work is so lightweight and facile (yes, even compared to Wes Anderson).
