Welcome to AMARA's annual Top 50 of the year poll! This year I'll be taking on the reins. Rules are the same, with some elaboration required on Eligibility because it was such a weird and messy year for releases. - Send me your top 20 films of 2020 ballots through PMs. The number of films could be less, but it must not exceed 20.
- I have set a very, definitely final deadline of submission on Monday, August 9 at 11:59 pm EST.
- Please make sure to rank the films. In a maximum of 20 films, #1 will receive 20 points, #2 will receive 19 points, so on, and #20 will receive 1 point. For lists with less than 20 films, the lowest-ranked entry will receive 1 point and it increases by a point from there (for example, the highest-ranked film in a ballot of 10 films will receive 10 points).
- If you want to vote early or already have a readymade list, feel free to do so. You have free reign to edit your lists in case you still have some films left to watch or something unexpected makes a splash in your ballot. Again, there is no rush; if you want to wait till 1 or 2 days of the deadline, you can do so.
- Eligibility: Any film that got a theatrical release in its country (or countries) of origin, got a streaming or virtual release in 2020 is eligible. Films which got only a festival release in 2020 and got released on major platforms in 2021 or later are not eligible. Look up IMDb or other reliable film websites for release details.
- TV films such as Bad Education are eligible. TV shows and miniseries are not (apologies to fans of I May Destroy You, Tiger King and Normal People), with the partial exception of Small Axe (more on that later).
- I want to clear up some possible confusion regarding some films:
Nomadland, The Father and Minari are eligible as they all got virtual screenings sometime in 2020 (and in the case of The Father, got a theatrical release in Spain in 2020. Not a country of origin though, so make that of what you will). Pieces of a Woman was also given a limited run in theatres on December 30 2020 so it's also eligible, so if you want to vote for it this year you can do so. Riders of Justice is eligible for voting as well for anyone who is curious.
Films which competed in awards ceremonies this year alongside 2020 titles but otherwise got wide releases only in 2021, such as Judas and the Black Messiah, I Care a Lot, French Exit, Malcolm & Marie, The United States vs. Billie Holiday, The Dig and The Mauritanian are not eligible. Please keep those titles for next year. Quo Vadis, Aida?, as far as I know, is also not eligible as it played only in festivals in 2020 and IMDb does not list any theatrical/streaming release for 2020. If anyone has any details regarding Quo Vadis, Aida? getting a theatrical/streaming/virtual screening that year, please do tell me. Quo Vadis, Aida? is eligible for voting, big thanks to pendragon for the clarification. Small Axe is eligible for now, with one caveat - if you want to vote, vote for only the individual films, not the collective whole. I am open to further discussion regarding this.
Happy voting and stay safe! Feel free to post FYCs in the thread.

I thought that too until I looked closer at IMDb and there is a Bosnia and Herzegovina theatrical release date on October 10th, 2020. I did a little digging and found further evidence here: www.filmneweurope.com/news/bosnia-herzegovina/item/120904-quo-vadis-aida-tops-bosnian-and-herzegovinian-box-office-for-three-weeks. Also, I'm pretty sure The Dry is eligible. It had a premier in Melbourne on December 11th, 2020 and an advance screening in Adelaide on December 17th followed by a general release in Australia on January 1st, 2021. That sounds like it should qualify for 2020, but I wanted to be sure.

I am quite unsure about the release year thing. For instance, a couple of films which would I could include - Claire Oakley's Make Up and The Swerve are listed on various websites under different years, ranging from 2018 to 2020. Similar issue with Saint Maud too. Officially listed as 2019 but I think it was more widely available only in 2020.

I checked up on Make Up and The Swerve too and they also got official releases in 2020, so they qualify for this poll as well. IMDb generally lists festival releases as the year of release; for polling purposes they do not count and public theatrical/streaming release dates are the ones considered.

Cool, I'll consider those if I make the list then. The years listed on IMDb, Letterboxd can be so confusing - I just saw Sound of Metal was listed as a 2019 film on Letterboxd.

I have extended the deadline to 10 days to accommodate some gap with the AMARA annual ceremony, last date of submission is now on July 14. Anyone who has already voted is free to edit their lists in case you still have some films to catch up to.

My personal life is bit of a mess right now so I'm extending the deadline for hopefully the final time to July 21. Once again, anyone who wants to review, please drop your names either here or through PMs. Anyone who wants to edit their lists in the meantime can also do so.

Please please vote, people. It's your civic duty. I'm getting annoyed on Miles' and Sharbs' behalf because they put so much work into these polls. I know everyone's busy but surely more people can take 5 minutes to throw together a list for Miles and 1-2 damn minutes for the official AMARA ballot (it's literally just going through the list clicking on your winners -- requires not an ounce of effort so do it now!). Getting ready to go scorched earth on the tag function.

I don't feel as weirdly 'scorched Earth' about it as Tommen, but if you do want to get more ballots, the best thing to do would be to start tagging and PM'ing people. Miles Morales

Miles Morales I do intend to tag people who voted for the AMARA ballots and haven't yet voted here. I just wanted more people to vote without having the need to tag them. I've been facing issues in my personal life too so I haven't been able to be as proactive as I could be (and my computer started malfunctioning again so I have to start ballot counting again from scratch).

Extended for the final time to August 5, because I need the space to do proper ballot counting. Meanwhile tagging all the people who voted for this year's AMARAs and haven't yet voted here:
- @dexter
... as well as some other people who may want to vote:

here is my final submission, which will double as my FYC as i'm pretty sure most of this board has seen only a couple of these
1. Monster Hunter (Anderson, 2020) 2. Moonscape (Benyamin, 2020) 3. Double Phase (Makino, 2020) 4. Variant (Meredith, 2020) 5. Inventing the Future (Medina, 2020) 6. Still Processing (Romvari, 2020) 7. Tenet (Nolan, 2020) 8. Untitled (Makino, 2020) 9. The Empty Man (Prior, 2020) 10. Money Plan (Lawrence, 2020)
