I thought he acquitted himself fine on The Wire, was good in Friday Night Lights, fine in Chronicle, fine in That Awkward Moment, respectable in Creed, ...
Haven't seen Just Mercy or Fahrenheit 451.
Essentially, I feel like he acts from the same register in almost every movie. This sort of defiance/bellowing affect with no layers.

I thought he was great in Creed and phenomenal in Black Panther and Fruitvale Station. Him and Coogler have a great collaboration going. Definitely has what it takes to be a permanent A-List movie star and I feel he's still growing as an actor. I think he's going to surprise people in A Journal for Jordan that's coming out this year.

Mixed.......has the movie star swag without the work yet but he's young.......
I think he's - at least - atm under-performing, coming off as vain and preening - and somewhat dumb actually - hence my "use your head" advice comment a while back.
His speech this past Summer about race relations was um........shockingly dumbass. I posted it, you can search and find it.
I pretty much feel like you do about him but he was pretty clearly strong in Fruitvale Station .............but Just Mercy was preening surface stuff and he got blown off the screen by Foxx. He's 34 and is attached to a lot of "dude, don't do it" stuff imo - the remake of Scarface - Danny Boyle's Methuselah, Creed III .........but he may not do all that ......and Journal For Jordan could be correct a lot of wrongs..........he has another film due Wrong Answer that could be straight up great.

I think he is an incredibly charismatic actor who had an explosive start and he has shown remarkable screen presence. He's capitalized on it well, too, playing a well-regarded Marvel villain and attaching himself to a franchise and galvanizing it back to life. I don't know when that will transition into Oscar attention (maybe this year?), but as far as a generational talent goes, I'd put him top five of the 25-35 range.

He's fine in "Fruitvale Station" but usually don't really care about him.

Very talented. Fruitvale Station is by far his best work.
He can definitely be a star although I'm not completely sure his range isn't kind of limited.

Um, well forget what I said the other day ..........because RIGHT now............. Needs to fire his agent tbh. It would be hard to find a movie or performance I hated more than Without Remorse - I expected it to be a meh action movie, instead I straight up hated it........and here at least, hated HIM. This is exactly what he didn't need. Save all that "pacinoyes you're an elitist, it's a good action picture blah blah blah" - it's not. Right now at least he isn't even in Denzel's same profession much less jumping up to his level - and that's no matter what people tell him about his smile and abs. I'm not talking falling short of great stuff - Fences/Malcolm X level Denzel - I'm talking swinging wildly and missing when he's the slumming, on autopilot Denzel - Equalizer 1 / 2, The Little Things, Bone Collector..........etc stuff that I don't even rate at all. Career intervention/turnaround needed........immediately.

This isn't something I was ever interested in watching, but I'm curious what was it about his performance specifically that made you hate it so much? Like you said, I would have expected just a meh action movie based on the trailer...

I think he's generally a charismatic presence and solid actor who is especially tremendous in all his Ryan Coogler collaborations. Coogler isn't afraid to challenge him and they have such trust and comfort with one another that Jordan is inspired to rise to that challenge. I'd like to see Jordan get more self-motivated and inspired to bring that kind of A-game elsewhere even when working with lesser directors.

Like you said, I would have expected just a meh action movie based on the trailer... Mattsby nailed it first in his review in the "Last Movie You Saw" thread - "awkward and try hard" - this is an unrelentingly vain and humorless performance (at least intentionally) although some of his facial choices provide much to think about: At some point a guy who's killed this much (don't ask) would be at least detached to it or machine like.........instead he's rather gleefully psychopathic like he's hopped up on Red Bulls and blow and has now tasted blood for the very first time while simultaneously changing into a werewolf .....

Majors would blow Jordan off the screen tbh .......but I do like the delusional swagger and ambition these guys have - must be nice to have a hit....... you guys could do a Righteous Kill - that one's totally attainable...... variety.com/2023/film/news/creed-3-michael-b-jordan-jonathan-majors-new-collaboration-1235543067/ Between their evident respect for one another, Jordan confirms that he plans to work together with Majors again in the future: “We plan on it.”
Majors added an analog to his partnership with Jordan: “De Niro and Pacino.”
Jordan elaborates, “We’re excited about that, and I have those conversations with him. Acting is such a solo journey, where you’re fighting for your place on that call sheet for such a long time. So when you’ve got somebody that doesn’t care as much about that stuff, it’s like, ‘Let’s go. How much damage can we do together?’”
“All of it,” retorts Majors.

Amazing in Black Panther but boring in everything else. Kilmonger was a genuine surprise and unlike anything else Jordan had done. He's got this casual swagger tempered by righteous fury and Jordan thrived on that characterization with ease and created the MCU's most complex and tbh likable villain. He's essentially playing an actual Black Panther leader, that's the vibe he's bringing and IMO he's better at it than Kaluuya was in Judas.
But yeah Majors is just so much more varied. He's got the charisma and swagger but he's got range too and already after just a couple years post-2019 has a resume twice as diverse as Jordan accomplished in the last 10 years. I hope Jordan gets some more fun roles because he stagnates in the stoic & somber macho types. If I watch Creed III, it will 100% be for Majors who if the trailers are any indication is giving another entertaining perf that's *completely* new territory for him. He's going to be one of the most exciting actors of the 2010s...

A very talented actor who shines brightest in his collaborations with Coogler. He's not a terribly original actor in his choices, which is why his non-Coogler collabs aren't as successful, but he has an always reliable screen presence.
Starting off on a hell of a foot as a director, though. His work behind the camera on Creed III was damn impressive.
