And The Emotions "Best of My Love"

The Muffs Outer Space
I have talked a lot about how Kim Shattuck wrote more great songs than Liz Phair, Alanis Morrissette, and Courtney Love did combined in the 90s but she also out-sung them too.
Her actual singing is the opposite of everything I detest in Julien Baker's vocal choices on "Little Oblivions" (2021) - which to me are entirely predictable and faux dramatic BS. Shattuck sings in a way that you can never quite guess until it happens - she is like Ray Davies in a way actually - in how she tries on different phrasing and inflection as the song demands it - which gives her songs a fresh, buoyant and spontaneous quality.
This is my favorite vocal of hers and one of her best songs too - she sings it like a dude too - particularly the way the first line drops down initially then rises on the last word (another Ray Davies trick)"I'm pathetic now" - and phrases her vocals like a guy throughout too, clipping off passages a typical (and boring) female singer would elongate or overemphasize...........She never tries to sound cute and when she does sound cute, it's conversational and off hand........and it ends with her scream which is the best scream for a girl in Rock ever.
I love her mix of cotton candy/whiskey/goofy humor .....she was a genuine American original, who wrote terrific songs and sung them spectacularly too
RIP

Lucy and The Rats Lucky
Let me tell you about sexism MAR - if Lucy Ellis was a man nobody would give af about her band. She can't write songs particularly well......her group (The Rats) flesh out arrangements and play something like Surf Rock over her simple compositions - it's catchy by itself......... but not particularly striking.
Almost the whole appeal is from her voice - and she didn't even sing lead in her life until 5 years ago (in her mid 30s). She's genuinely sweet and warm in how she sings and in 2020 she placed an album, a song and another song - a cover - (in a duet) in my favorites of the year which makes her, right now, pretty much the best female voice in Rock atm.......

Grace Slick's vocals on White Rabbit are just incredible. Any doubt, listen to them isolated...
She really is one of the great singers of any time.

The Pandoras - Stop PretendingI've already talked about The Pandoras in an album review - on their 2nd record the twelve song - Stop Pretending - they were the best all female band of their era (or made the best album at least) .....on this whole album (the late) Paula Pierce is a genuine Rock Star - especially on this title song - it's a put-down song, mean af - like Madonna with guitars .........and far tougher (and more slutty tbh) than The Go-Gos or The Bangles ever came close to. She and her band look like porn princesses in heat - mid-80s version......she's laughing, playful, smiling, a total bitch and she means it too....... Pierce gives one of the great and dominating female vocal performances on this album, she's like a female Jagger - and she wrote the songs and plays lead guitar.....

Sonic Youth Kool Thing
You can deconstruct every line of this song, and every image - every one - in LL Cool J's iconography - he is the subject of this song: the black cat (for a panther), the radio for (Radio), the "black and white" color-scape of (the also amazing) "Going Back to Cali" video itself by LL......in how it's shot.....the "I don't think so" lift from the original song.....
This song was great before the video was ever shot and the video makes it much greater - Kim Gordon is mesmerizing here - the Kurt Cobain of her day..... but she got there first......this is the only diss song LL Cool J didn't respond to......because what was he gonna say?

This is Antonella Ruggiero from Matia Bazar. I had the privilege of attending one of her concerts, and her live voice is simply perfect.
They made an English version of this song too.

Coach Party Can't Talk, Won't (2020 / 2021) from After Party (2021)"I ripped a hole in my favourite jeans. I started crying. I think this means...... something else is going on"
So sings Jess Eastwood the best thing to happen to "girl songs" in 2021 (at least until The Exbats comes out) and to UK female Rock vocalists since......well it's been a while....... A beguiling lyricist, singer, and video star here - all for maybe the most promising band without an album yet (just 2 EP's atm)....... Get on this before they - or more likely Pitchfork - fnck it up for everybody.....

Francoise Hardy - All Over The World (1964)
I picked her to start the "Songs You Like - Not Sung in English" thread but this is my favorite song of hers in English......I love a lot of her work and I've mentioned this song before as one that should have been used in many love stories / movies .........

Oh honeys, I sing a little... but where to begin? I really love singers who can really sing...
Isreal's Ofra Haza - one of the best voices ever to grace this earth... here she is live to prove it.
Mexico's Lila Downs has a tremendous voice with so many layers... live.
Cape Verde's Cesaria Evora - full of beauty and longing
France's Patricia Kaas
Morroco's Hindi Zahra
USA's Lizz Wright
Spain's Rosalia
Algeria's Souad Massi
and finally
Greek American Diamanda Gala's Gloomy Sunday is the best way to clear a party when you want your guests to go home...

M.I.A. Paper Planes (2007)
This song - one of the great pieces of Pop Art of this century - by anyone - was a big hit, current in its sound, topical (and scathing) in lyrics and conception, far beyond merely smart, and importantly also outside her own personal world.
In 2007 this seemed like the realization of what the world of music might have sounded like if The Clash or Public Enemy had a whole lot of hit singles........today though it sounds utterly out of step with the "personal" or "confessional" (yeah right) hit songs of Disney Pop Princesses and former strippers turned rappers ruling over the wasteland that is "the charts".

Lately on the radio, I've been hearing more Whitney Houston songs that weren't "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" and I heard "I Have Nothing" and was in tears. I had goosebumps like when she killed the Star-Spangled Banner and made it her own personal trophy.

I don't know about favorite or "best," but here are three not yet mentioned that stand out to me as impressive:
X-Ray Spex - Oh Bondage, Up Yours!
Missing Persons - Mental Hopscotch
Cyndi Lauper - All Through the Night (specifically, that note that hangs between 3:30-3:42)

Cher Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) - 1966This song works even better when a male singer does it how's THAT for controversial statement - Terry Reid specifically blows every other version away ...... but ........nobody ever messes it up.......the original version ..........of course written by her husband Sonny

The Crystals He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss) - 1962One of the great yet sexist songs - not mutually exclusive - (awesomely co-written by Carole King and awesomely produced by Phil Spector) in all of Rock and Roll - along with Under My Thumb by the Stones......Stray Cat Blues by the Stones.......Some Girls by the Stones ...........well........ you get the idea
