quick housekeeping: despite the unending, mind-crushing, deathspiral clusterfuck that was 2020, the movies were actually pretty good! Re: eligibility, obviously TV/Netflix films are eligible per the usual and I extended eligibility to films that had brief virtual releases in non-festival venues (MoMa for example). I might have missed some because it was hard to track some of that info (i.e. French Exit), but I have a good swath of films to work with. I'm going back to the 5-nominee system because I'm feeling stingy. Five nominees is the norm and IMO it's neater. Some greats will get left out as a result but you could say that about people in a 7th spot too... gotta draw the line somewhere and I'm drawing it at 5 going forward. I'm sure "fuller" lineups will be posted elsewhere later because 90% of what I do on this board is post lists I watched a total of 126 films released between Jan 1st and Dec 31st 2020 which is up 20 from last year's 106. I'm missing a couple international films and docs which is typical. My international lineup does leave something to be desired, at least to me. Think I saw around a dozen and I'm only passionate about one of them. I'm sure that will change down the road as more obscure films become available on Kanopy or something, but this category is always a struggle and can take years to fill out. The full list of eligible titles: 7500 Ammonite Another Round The Artist's Wife The Assistant Babyteeth Bad Education Bad Hair The Banker Berlin Alexanderplatz Big Time Adolescence Birds of Prey Black Bear Blow the Man Down Borat Subsequent Moviefilm Bull The Burnt Orange Heresy Calm with Horses The Climb Come to Daddy Coven Cuties Da 5 Bloods Dear Comrades The Devil All the Time Driveways Emma Enola Holmes Extraction Fanny Lye Deliver'd The Father First Cow The Forty Year-Old Version Freaky The Glorias Gretel & Hansel Greyhound The Half of It Happiest Season The Hater Hillbilly Elegy His House Horse Girl I'm No Longer Here I'm Thinking of Ending Things I'm Your Woman The Invisible Man Let Him Go Let Them All Talk The Life Ahead The Lodge Lost Girls Love and Monsters Mank The Man Standing Next Ma Rainey's Black Bottom The Midnight Sky Minari Miss Juneteenth Mulan The Nest Never Rarely Sometimes Always News of the World Nomadland The Old Guard One Night in Miami On the Rocks Onward The Outpost Palm Springs The Personal History of David Copperfield Pieces of a Woman Possessor Project Power The Prom Promising Young Woman Rebecca The Rental Rocks Roh Run Saint Frances Saint Maud Sea Fever Shirley Soul Sound of Metal Summer of 85 Summerland A Sun Swallow Sylvie's Love Tenet There Is No Evil To the Stars The Trial of the Chicago 7 True History of the Kelly Gang Uncle Frank Underwater Undine The Vast of Night Vivarium Waiting for the Barbarians The Way Back Wendy Wolfwalkers Wonder Woman 1984 Yes, God, Yes

Nearest competition is The Father with 7. -- Mank, David Copperfield, and I'm Thinking of Ending Things are the most-nominated films to not be nominated for BP (they have six each). Two scored screenplay nods and one a directing nod. -- A total of 51 films are recognized across 23 categories, down seven from last year's 58 and an exact match with 2018's lineups. -- Wolfwalkers is the least-nominated film in the BP category with only two nominations, one less than last year's Her Smell, 2018's The Rider and this year's Driveways which itself only nabbed three. Interestingly, my favorite movie not nominated for BP was The Climb and if that had broken the top 5 instead of Wolfwalkers it would've only gotten three nominations. This is just how we do things. -- In an outburst of plainly nativist leanings from the Tommen Awards, only two international films are nominated outside of the international film category. That's pretty rare. -- Most painful omission of the night is The Hater's Maciej Musiałowski who was my #6 in Lead Actor. He was chilling and brilliant. --My lowest-ranked film to receive a nomination is Rebecca (my least favorite film of the whole year!) for costume design. What can I say. I can't resist Julian Day's outfits. My highest-ranked film to not receive any nominations is The Burnt Orange Heresy at #19 (came very close for screenplay). -- All films in the Academy's BP lineup (minus Judas which was ineligible) received at least one nomination, but Trial of the Chicago 7 and Nomadland both received only one. -- The Forty Year-Old Version received four nominations... all for Radha Blank. That has to be some kind of record. -- Four of the nominees in BD are being nominated for their FIRST films! That HAS to be some kind of record. -- that's all for now. sorry for all the collages winners will be announced next week on Friday the 23rd and they will be better than the Oscars

Welcome to the Standing Man fan club. he was so good last year, I couldn't pass up that double nom. I look forward to future Rylance stans discovering Barbarians like an artifact in an ancient ruin. He's one of the biggest reasons that movie worked for me. Brought a lot genuine warmth/compassion to that character which is a balm in that lonely desert outpost on the edge of a brutalized frontier. looking forward to seeing your picks
