Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade was a perfect send-off for Indy. He's literally riding off into the sunset. Crystal Skulls sucked and obviously Speilberg's heart wasn't in it anymore by that point. I trust Mangold so it'll be interesting to see what happens. But honestly imo..should've just ended the damn thing with The Last Crusade. To me Raiders is the only great Indy film. Last Crusade is fine but is pretty much just a beat for beat retelling of Raiders with new details plugged in mad lib style (long lost father instead of long lost lover, Holy Grail instead of Ark, tank chase instead of truck chase, exc). Temple of Doom is pure shit as well and even worse than Crystal Skull in my book. Indy would certainly be pretty straightforward to reboot given the simplicity of the characters and situations but I wish they would just let it die at this point. We agree on something, at least. But I feel like while Last Crusade hit some of the same beats as Raiders, Connery's inclusion was that secret sauce that the original film didn't have. I also thought Alison Doody was a great character (sure, she's no Marion, but I don't need her to be), Denholm Elliott gets to actually do something this time, and Julian Glover is a great bad guy (and I although think he and Michael Byrne > Belloq and Toht).

I've mentioned this in another thread a while back, but one thing that bugs me a little about Last Crusade (though I still love the movie overall) is how Marcus and Sallah become more comic relief. So even though Marcus gets less to do in Raiders, I prefer the way that film plays it a bit more straight, and it feels more tonally balanced imo. I've always found Julian Glover fine but somewhat more dull compared to Freeman as a villain. And I fucking love Toht so much, I basically quote his "We are.... not thirsty" line in his creepy voice to my wife on a daily basis.

Love Mads, but I would prefer it if he weren't the villain just because I don't want him to be typecast as the "vaguely European bad guy" in big movies like this.

So what are we hoping the MacGuffin will be this time? Another religious artifact (Spear of Destiny/Holy Lance, Shroud of Turin, Cross of Christ, etc.), or something different like the lost city of Atlantis?

Surprised that Kretschmann and Mads haven't teamed up before... They'd make a great pair in like a slick Euro thriller. Kretschmann has not only worked with Polanski and Argento.... but he's been in projects with the greatest actors from various countries... Al Pacino, Kang Ho Song, Bruno Ganz, Daniel Auteuil....

Love the casting of Boyd Holbrook (criminally underrated actor imo). He was great as the villain in Logan (which Mangold directed). I honestly thought Boyd was destined to be a pretty big star / leading man after his great back to back performances in Narcos and Logan. He is a solid actor, has the rugged good movie star looks and can do the whole brooding thing well. but then The Predator happened which was one of the worst movies I've ever seen . That side traced his career a little bit.
Hopefully Mangold gives Boyd Holbrook a good / sizable role in Indy 5 cause I want to see him become more well known.

Some first set photos setting up at Bamburgh Castle. Maybe they're using Lucas's old idea of a haunted castle. Hadn't occurred to me but I'd be pretty much on board with an Indiana Jones ghost story that had him in his old age confronting artifacts related to the mystery of death and the afterlife. Not sure there's a better Macguffin than that.

That would be a good idea actually...

Admittedly a haunted mansion movie would be pretty cool. Lucas's idea for the second film of doing it in a haunted castle in Scotland always sounded really cool and much better than what we ended up getting. It would have been very different from Raiders. Apparently Spielberg thought it was too similar to Poltergeist but Poltergeist rules so IDK what the problem is with that.

So apparently this is called 'Indiana Jones and the Empire of Evil'. There's also these pics:

That title sounds dumb as hell. But whatever. It'll be hard to sink lower than Crystal Skull, though the last 30 minutes of The Wolverine were pretty terrible. Mangold is all over the place.

Empire of Eeeeeeviiiillllll (read that in Mermaid Man's voice)...which is the kind of "old man trying to still be a hero and laughably failing" vibes I'm getting from the very idea of this.
Is Shia LaBeouf in this or are they retconning him? And that concept art looks like UFOs...I hoped they learned their lesson, but maybe not.

Apparently Toby Jones is in this.... also there's mo-cap dots on Ford's face that indicate de-aging.
