Brief housekeepingLast year was alllll about catching up to seasons for shows I was watching for the first time. Still have some major blindsopts but overall I'm pretty happy with my lineups this year and I watched quite a lot. My TV watching over the past two years has shot up more than GME's stock price ( ), and it's going to continue next year with me watching shows like Atlanta, Peaky Blinders (etc!) for the first time. Hey, better late than never. the 37 eligible programs (up nine from last year's 28) Drama Better Call Saul season 5 The Boys season 2 Bridgerton The Crown season 4 Killing Eve season 3 Outlander season 5 The Outsider* Ozark season 3 Perry Mason P-Valley
*HBO submitted this to the Emmys in the drama series section and despite them passing up on a second season, a second season was being shopped around w/ other networks so my understanding was that at least back in spring 2020 the idea was that this would be a recurring program and not just a single limited series.
Comedy Avenue 5 Better Things season 4 Bojack Horseman season 6 part II Feel Good The Flight Attendant The Great Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet Ramy season 2 Schitt's Creek season 6 Sex Education season 2 Space Force Ted Lasso What We Do in the Shadows season 2 Work in Progress
Limited Series Defending Jacob Fargo season 4 The Haunting of Bly Manor I Know This Much Is True I May Destroy You Mrs. America Normal People The Plot Against America The Queen's Gambit The Undoing Unorthodox Your Honor ZeroZeroZero
Blindspots: Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist, Brockmire, High Maintenance, Little Fires Everywhere, The Wilds, Westworld, The Good Fight, The Good Lord Bird, etc. (some of these I'll definitely watch at some point) but enough of that. Nominees to be announced shortly! Gonna be some snubs and surprises this year but most of the eligible titles will get at least something

Curious to see your Supp Actress in a Comedy Series.....How many from Sex Education!!! Emma Mackey (or is she lead), Aimee Lou Wood, Chinenye Ezeudu, Gillian Anderson, etc. Also, even tho I didn't like the show, Rosie Perez was pretty good in The Flight Attendant....
Quick nudge - Good Lord Bird is a 2020 must.

Fuck yeah. LOVE your love for Better Call Saul and Ted Lasso! Also, JACKIE DAYTONA HUMAN BARTENDER! So you're already better than the Emmys (who I still cannot believe snubbed Odenkirk and Seahorn... hell, even Mckean tweeted out what a crock it was that she wasn't nominated). one of my game night friends has a Jackie Daytona t-shirt too. I envy him. Oh oh oh... almost forgot, "ROY KENNNNTTTTTT, HE'S HERE, HE'S THERE, HE'S EVERY FUCKING WHERE ROY KENT!

BEST EPISODE IN A LIMITED SERIESThe Haunting of Bly Manor - "The Romance of Certain Old Clothes" I Know This Much Is True - "Six" I May Destroy You - "Ego Death" Mrs. America - "Reagan" The Queen's Gambit - "End Game" AND THE WINNER IS"END GAME" - written and directed by Scott Frank "Let's play." BEST EPISODE IN A COMEDY SERIESBojack Horseman - "The View From Halfway Down" Schitt's Creek - "Happy Ending" Schitt's Creek - "Start Spreading the News" Ted Lasso - "Make Rebecca Great Again" What We Do in the Shadows - "Colin’s Promotion" AND THE WINNER IS"HAPPY ENDING" - written by Dan Levy; directed by Jordan Canning Thanks for the memories, Schitt's Creek. What a strange, fabulous, and beautiful journey it was. BEST EPISODE IN A DRAMA SERIESBetter Call Saul - "Bagman" The Crown - "Terra Nullius" Outlander - "Journeycake" Outlander - "Never My Love" Perry Mason - "Chapter 7" AND THE WINNER IS"NEVER MY LOVE" - written by Matthew B. Roberts & Toni Graphia; directed by Jamie Payne Contains some of the most viscerally disturbing content since the Wentworth Prison scenes from season 1. Making clever use of a surreal recurring dream sequence, the episode is a powerful examination of trauma and the ways our psyches cope with it.

BEST ENSEMBLE IN A LIMITED SERIESI Know This Much Is True I May Destroy You Mrs. America The Queen's Gambit The UndoingAND THE WINNER ISMRS. AMERICA - Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne, Uzo Aduba, Elizabeth Banks, Kayli Carter, Ari Graynor, Melanie Lynskey, Margo Martindale, John Slattery, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Tracey Ullman, Sarah Paulson The amount of female talent (+ John Slattery) in this thing is off the charts. There was no other program on TV last year with more female talent (+ John Slattery). Each performer helped round out the story, especially unsung heroes like Jeanne Tripplehorn and Ari Graynor whose roles are too small to highlight on their own but are nonetheless essential to the experience, and--must we state the obvious?--the leads killed it. BEST ENSEMBLE IN A COMEDY SERIESThe Flight Attendant Ramy Schitt's Creek Sex Education Ted LassoAND THE WINNER ISSCHITT'S CREEK - Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Dan Levy, Annie Murphy, Jennifer Robertson, Emily Hampshire, Chris Elliott, Karen Robinson, Sarah Levy, John Hemphill, Dustin Milligan, Noah Reid If this is the only way I can give an award to Stevie, goddamnit it I'll do it. Flawless ensemble. This crew was an utter delight. You can tell how much these people loved each other and how special this show was for everyone involved, especially me crying in my bedroom to their wonderfulness. BEST ENSEMBLE IN A DRAMA SERIESBetter Call Saul Bridgerton The Crown Perry Mason P-ValleyAND THE WINNER ISTHE CROWN - Olivia Colman, Tobias Menzies, Helena Bonham Carter, Gillian Anderson, Josh O'Connor, Emma Corrin, Marion Bailey, Erin Doherty, Stephen Boxer, Emerald Fennell I just love this photo. All those royal fake smiles and Di in the corner looking about ready to break something. Y'all know I can't resist celebrating huge swaths of British talent and despite my obvious obsession with O'Connor and Corrin, this win isn't just for them, I promise. Also want to shout out the unsung heroes Erin Doherty who brings a bitter edge to Princess Anne and Marion Bailey whose Queen Mother is just fucking awful but also it's Marion Bailey so you can't hate her as much as you want to. And my girl Emerald Fennell, Oscar-nominated director. Cheers.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A LIMITED SERIESAdriano Chiaramida, ZeroZeroZeroGiuseppe de Domenico, ZeroZeroZeroTimothy Olyphant, FargoMichael Stuhlbarg, Your HonorDonald Sutherland, The UndoingAND THE WINNER ISGIUSEPPE DE DOMENICO as Stefano La Piana in ZeroZeroZeroAn overlooked gem right here. This limited series dropped on Prime early in 2020 and I remember shouting it out back in the summer. De Domenico takes no prisoners as the ruthless grandson of an even more ruthless Italian mob boss. The character's overreaching puts him in eminent danger and De Domenico navigates the rise and fall brilliantly, carrying himself as if the whole world owes him. BEST SUPPORTING IN A COMEDY SERIESBrett Goldstein, Ted LassoHarvey Guillén, What We Do in the ShadowsDan Levy, Schitt's CreekJohn Malkovich, Space ForceMark Proksch, What We Do in the ShadowsAND THE WINNER ISDAN LEVY as David Rose in Schitt's CreekHe made us laugh, he made us cry. BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A LIMITED SERIESUzo Aduba, Mrs. AmericaJessie Buckley, FargoMargo Martindale, Mrs. AmericaRosie O'Donnell, I Know This Much Is TrueTracey Ullman, Mrs. AmericaAND THE WINNER ISMARGO MARTINDALE as Bella Abzug in Mrs. AmericaA shrewd operator beaten down by the realities of the political world, constantly pulled between the interests of her cohorts and what she felt were necessary compromises. Martindale is incapable of giving a bad performance and at first blush this is quite similar to a lot of her other work. A larger-than-life personality with a big voice and the will to use it, but the writing was so good that I can comfortably say this is the most I've ever liked Martindale. I loved the push-pull between the competing interests of her character and the constant struggle between how she wants the world to be and an encroaching apathy to the way the world is. BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIESHiam Abbass, RamyGillian Anderson, Sex EducationZosia Mamet, The Flight AttendantAnnie Murphy, Schitt's CreekJuno Temple, Ted LassoAND THE WINNER ISANNIE MURPHY as Alexis Rose in Schitt's CreekShe's a Lamborghini, she's a Hollywood star. She's a little bit tipsy when she drives her car. She's expensive sushi, she's a cute huge yacht. She's a little bit single even when she's not. She's a little bit Alexis. The reason Murphy wins this hands down is because of her remarkable ability to marry the delightfully shticky aspects of Alexis's personality with the incredible depth of her character. "The Presidential Suite" blew everyone away. You know why. You know. BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIESCynthia Erivo, The OutsiderJulia Garner, OzarkTatiana Maslany, Perry MasonJulianne Nicholson, The OutsiderRhea Seehorn, Better Call SaulAND THE WINNER ISRHEA SEEHORN as Kim Wexler in Better Call SaulEasiest choice ever. Season 5 was a turning point for Kim and those who watched it know exactly what I'm talking about. She's one of the best characters in the whole BB canon. A wealth of internal conflicts with an ever-eroding sense of right and wrong. Seehorn kills it every week. The Emmys did bad and should feel bad.

BEST LEADING ACTOR IN A LIMITED SERIESBryan Cranston, Your HonorDane DeHaan, ZeroZeroZeroHugh Grant, The UndoingPaul Mescal, Normal PeopleMark Ruffalo, I Know This Much Is TrueAND THE WINNER ISMARK RUFFALO as Dominick and Thomas Birdsey in I Know This Much Is TrueThe hype is real. This is the best thing Ruffalo has ever done, and I say that as someone who understands the hate he sometimes gets. This dual performance is more akin to You Can Count on Me than anything else in his canon but it goes a lot deeper than that. Channeling some major Affleck in Manchester by the Sea vibes, Ruffalo plays a beaten down man haunted by past demons and desperate but unable to atone for deep-seated guilt. Incapable of forgiving himself or anyone else, he's angry and miserable, and everything he does is a struggle. A compelling and compassionate portrait of self-loathing and reckoning with the sins of one's father. BEST LEADING ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIESMatt Berry, What We Do in the ShadowsAsa Butterfield, Sex EducationNicholas Hoult, The GreatEugene Levy, Schitt's CreekJason Sudeikis, Ted LassoAND THE WINNER ISASA BUTTERFIELD as Otis Milburn in Sex EducationThat's right, if anything had a chance at breaking the Schitt's Creek streak, you knew it had to be Asa Butterfield's O-Face in that premier. I was incredibly impressed by Butterfield's dead-on comic timing in season 1 and he was even better in season 2. Hilarious performance. BEST LEADING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIESNicco Annan, P-ValleySam Heughan, OutlanderJosh O'Connor, The CrownBob Odenkirk, Better Call SaulAntony Starr, The BoysAND THE WINNER ISJOSH O'CONNOR as Grumpy Prince Charles in The CrownI've already said how much I was obsessed with this performance. He was one of the best things about season 3 and he had even more time to shine in season . It's remarkably technical. Meticulously mannered, postured and accented. It's some of the most rigorous acting on the show this side of Foy. The perfect picture of toxic emotional repression. Even the way he smiles is gross and stiff, but then it's not like he chose to be born into a family of unsmiling assholes.

BEST LEADING ACTRESS IN A LIMITED SERIESCate Blanchett, Mrs. AmericaMichaela Coel, I May Destroy YouDaisy Edgar-Jones, Normal PeopleShira Haas, UnorthodoxVictoria Pedretti, The Haunting of Bly ManorAND THE WINNER ISCATE BLANCHETT as Phyllis Schlafly in Mrs. AmericaYou knew this was coming. This is the most stacked category of the whole night (so stacked that I couldn't even squeeze in ATJ), but still, STILL, Blanchett wins this thing hands down. She takes all the trophies. This was her best performance and undoubtedly her most challenging. Schlafly is such a fascinating character. Intensely triggering but 100% human and even perversely sympathetic in a way because her unhappiness stems from self-imposed barriers. She gleefully grabs for cheap political points to own the libs but can't reconcile her political ambitions with the narrative she religiously pushes. Blanchett dissects these contradictions and toxicities, this disconnect between personal ambition and partisan narrative, between fake smiles and icy glares in a performance that takes no prisoners. BEST LEADING ACTRESS IN A COMEDY SERIESKaley Cuoco, The Flight AttendantElle Fanning, The GreatMae Martin, Feel GoodAbby McEnany, Work in ProgressCatherine O'Hara, Schitt's CreekAND THE WINNER ISCATHERINE O'HARA as Moira Rose in Schitt's CreekWe all imagine being carried from the ashes by the goddess Artemis and here I get a balatron from Barnum & Bailey! BEST LEADING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIESCatriona Balfe, OutlanderJodie Comer, Killing EveEmma Corrin, The CrownPhoebe Dynevor, BridgertonBrandee Evans, P-ValleyAND THE WINNER ISEMMA CORRIN as Princess Diana in The CrownEveryone knew this was coming. Corrin ruined all other Dianas for me. She's just brilliant in this role. Her Lady Di is warm and inviting but also naïve and impulsive, and that's to say nothing of Corrin's remarkably technical voice and accent work to bring Diana's distinct voice to life. The arc is fantastic. From a precocious teenage to a wide-eyed young adult to a conflicted princess unsure of herself in the bleak shadow of her royal family, and finally a jaded woman broken down by circumstance and emotional neglect. Corrin shines all the way through.

ok... here are the big ones! BEST LIMITED SERIESThe Haunting of Bly Manor (Netflix) I Know This Much Is True (HBO) I May Destroy You (BBC America / HBO) Mrs. America (FX) The Queen's Gambit (Netflix) AND THE WINNER ISMRS. AMERICA (FX) - Created by Dahvi Waller A remarkable glimpse at a time and place in American politics at a cross-roads between feminist progress and reactionary conservativism in the ashes of the Hippie Movement and gearing up for the right revolution of the Reagan Era. This is top notch political drama but also a wonderful evocation of a past America in whose shadow we still live. Stylistically, politically, dramatically, this was a slam dunk for FX and TV-lovers everywhere. BEST COMEDY SERIESBojack Horseman (Netflix) Feel Good (Netflix) Schitt's Creek (Pop TV) Sex Education (Netflix) Ted Lasso (Apple TV+) AND THE WINNER ISSCHITT'S CREEK (Pop TV) - Created by Eugene & Dan Levy This is one I watched for the first time this past year and initially I had issues with it, but by season 4 I was totally in love with these characters and invested in their stories, and season 5 was even better, and season 6 was the best of all. That this show was able to win me over so utterly is credit to its enduring warmth and a set of characters whose journeys are difficult, complicated, but full of love, hope and promise. You can't help loving Schitt's Creek. BEST DRAMA SERIESBetter Call Saul (AMC) The Crown (Netflix) Outlander (Starz) Perry Mason (HBO) P-Valley (Starz) AND THE WINNER ISOUTLANDER (Starz) - Developed by Ronald D. Moore AKA, that show Mother's Milk was watching in The Boys season 2. I watched the first season of this show in early 2020 and wasn't expecting it to become one of my biggest obsessions but here we are. It's often messy and sometimes flawed but it compensates with unabashed romanticism, strong characters, and phenomenal acting from its often naked leads. For those still contemplating jumping into this thing, I can confirm that it's still really good five seasons later. This past season finds Jamie and Claire still eking out an unsure existence in the new world with anticolonialist tension brewing among the locals. Sooner or later, they have to make a dangerous choice. Overall I'd rank this a slight step down from Season 4 but the stunning final two episodes made my choice easy here. When Outlander is good, it's really good. I can't wait for season 6.

STATS / MISC-- Schitt's Creek leads the pack with a whopping 6 wins from 8 nominations. Mrs. America snagged 5. -- Five programs received more than 1 win compared to last year's two. -- Despite having more categories, only 10 programs received wins this year as opposed to last year's 12. Gotta spread that love. -- HBO received one win from its 26 nominations. Netflix received 25 noms and five wins. -- The biggest earners are Pop TV, FX, and Netflix. -- Each nominated programmer received at least one win except for BBC America. -- Outlander isn't the first to win best series without much love elsewhere. Last year Fleabag won best comedy without a single other win. annnnd that's a wrap. in the immutable words of Ray (where is that guy?): finally tv section ends, yawn (movie awards are coming soon and the presentation is going to have waaay too many collages)
