Kidman is for me the greatest actress currently working in the English language and one of the GOAT actresses, so nice to hear arguably the frontrunner for the Best Actress Oscar single out Kidman's incredibly seminal performance in To Die For as one of the main inspirations for her work in Promising Young Woman:Mulligan: Nicole Kidman in To Die For. She was actually somewhat of an inspiration for us in creating Promising Young Woman. She's just extraordinary. I can't describe it any other way. She's just extraordinary. It's like someone playing a violin. Her emotions go from one extreme to the other seamlessly, and she is simultaneously charming, enticing and terrifying all at the same time. I think it's just a masterclass.www.backstage.com/magazine/article/performances-actors-must-see-award-nominees-podcast-advice-72971/I've always said Kidman in To Die For is by a country mile one of the most influential performances in cinema history. She created a new cinematic archtype that many other actresses since her have ripped off liberally, usually to significant acclaim. But kudos to Mulligan for at least giving Kidman credit.

Mad respect to Aldis Hodge for his pick, and I actually really wanna see him do a remake of that.
Also, Bill Camp should totally be playing Rod Steiger roles. Imagine him in The Pawnbroker.

Turns out another Oscar nominee this year, Maria Bakalova has been citing Kidman as one of her main influences as an actress.
Her Powah!

Nicole Kidman delivered the performance of a lifetime in TO DIE FOR . I still think it's her best performance to date. I remember reading that Reese Witherspoon also based her performance in ELECTION on that character. Charlize Theron was also influenced by that performance when she was working on YOUNG ADULT. Sean Penn also said that he enjoyed her performance very much and thought it was a huge travesty that she wasn't even nominated for an Oscar. And yes pupdurcs , Kidman is without a doubt one of the greatest and most influential actresses working today.

That's like some Brando/DeNiro level of influence for female performers, which she isn't always fully credited for, imho.

I can absolutely see that. Muligan is also playing a cunning, devious climber just in a more sympathetic light. So much of that performance reminds me of Kidman’s mannerism in the opening scene from To Die For alone, which in almost any other actresses’ hands could have been a complete disaster.

I'm losing count on how many people cite Kidman's turn in To Die For as an inspiration. Add Charlize Theron in Young Adult to the list!

Not a surprise, Kidman is sensational in "To Die For" and it might be my favourite performance of hers. It has so many different elements that made her such a special actress in the first place.
Nice shout from Kaluuya for the birthday boy Chris Walken's performance in "King of New York" also. "There's no one like him" indeed.

This is one of those times I think that New York Times Greatest Actors of the 21st Century list deserves some credit, for placing Kidman as the highest ranked actress who works primarily in the English language. To Die For isn't a performance from this century, but it's influence has been pervasive (and other performances of hers from this century clearly have been influential as well) in this century. Kidman has helped shape the careers of so many actresses with her work than she's ever fully been credited for.

Even though I don't think she credited Kidman specifically (at least not that I'm aware of), I'm fairly confident Margot Robbie probably used To Die For as a reference point for how she approached her performance in I, Tonya as well. It's quite similar work, that several reviews picked up on.

Evan Rachel Wood's performance in Pretty Persuasion was also directly inspired by Kidman in To Die For.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if plenty of actresses have taken inspiration from Close in Dangerous Liasions. It's an incredibly iconic performance.

Yeah but Kidman was inspired by Meryl Streep at the checkout counter at Cracker Barrell for her performance. The amount of hard candies she got for free that day was inspiring.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if plenty of actresses have taken inspiration from Close in Dangerous Liasions. It's an incredibly iconic performance. Like almost every actress from Meryl Streep's era/generation, Close's influence has been (or felt) muted because of the overwhelming reverence attached to one actress, even though in my opinion, she is just as good an actress as Streep. Kidman is fortunate that she was part of the generation that came after Streep, where there was no such singular overwhelming figure that could completely overshadow every other single actress within her generation in terms of perception of value/importance (fairly or unfairly). So Kidman's own influence, particularly among actresses of her own generation or younger wasn't smothered in the way Streep seemed to smother the influence of people like Close, Jessica Lange, Susan Sarandon etc. But yeah, Close has done some seriously iconic work.

Close is definitely on Streep's level in terms of prestidge. They were pretty much on the same playing field in the 80's, but come the 90's and Meryl basically took her over, and never really looked back. I feel like only in the past decade, has she started to get back on track, and recognized as basically being in the same tier, a lot of which is no doubt helped by the overdue narrative she has.

One of my favourite Nicole Kidman films and perfomance was To die for. Maybe she deserves an spot in Oscar Leading Actress cathegory that year, not many great performance but there were 7 or 8 that trully shined.- Still then she won a couple of underseved Oscar Noms, so I guess If a robe was commited, the Academy repaired her with a huge indemnization.-
However, said that this perfomrance is one of the most inspired of Cinema History (or even in the last 30 years) I guess it's a stupid comments by the Kidmaniac ultra fans. Specially with the resembalnce of this performance and Malice 2 years before in 1993.-
