Aaaaaaaaaaand it bombed. Steve Jobs 2.0. No one cares about Spielberg anymore For someone who hates Spielberg so much, he sure lives in your head rent-free. I know I shouldn't go for this bait but hey, why not, I'm curious about the answers: how on earth did it bomb when we don't even know the Wednesday grosses yet (at least at the time I'm writing this)? Especially with its Thanksgiving release not even being wide but only semi-wide with 600 theatres? Isn't it fairly obvious that Universal is trying to play the long game with it with a gradual expansion to allow it to stay in theatres through the awards season? This ain't an opening weekend movie we're looking at so we're really gonna know if it's bombed or not way later. And who the fuck expects a 2.5-hour long autobiographical family drama without big stars to make big money anyway? Especially in this day and age? Dude, we get it, you hate Spielberg (which is so 2011, get real). But you're trying a bit too hard.

The quick VOD release (if the date sticks) is actually pretty common for Universal films these days - huge movies like Minions and Jurassic World 3 were available via VOD just a month after coming out despite continuing to make all sorts of dough at the box office. Ticket to Paradise was online after 2.5 weeks even though it was also doing well. So this is basically standard practice for Universal this year. Now, the number of theatres is a different issue - if they don't expand the count for the two upcoming weekends, the Dec 13 VOD choice is indeed a bit weird. It's clear that Universal is trying to emulate the Green Book or Licorice Pizza theatrical release models and I'm sure they'll keep the movie in theatres throughout the awards season with a big expansion around the Oscar nominations time but what Green Book and Licorice Pizza did not have was a quick VOD copy available for everyone before the Christmas holidays. Being online didn't really seem to affect the grosses of the aforementioned Minions, Jurassic World and Ticket to Paradise but only time will tell how that'll alter the theatrical intake of a movie like The Fabelmans which was never a moneymaker-in-the-making anyway. We're dealing with some new BO realities here, that's for sure. Of course I wish the best for the movie BO-wise but I'm not gonna lie - the thought of being able to watch it in just about two weeks is

Meanwhile, it's not out in cinemas here for another like 5 weeks.

Well, I'd describe most of my favorites as being kind of out of touch with the overall movie tendencies of the day (Spielberg, QT, Scorsese, PTA) and frankly I'm glad they are Moreover, I'd say that the older maestros have earned their right to be out of touch. There was a time when they were setting the trends. Things have changed but it's good that the current trends aren't setting them.

Imagine viewing money as a deity I mean, it kind of is. Sadly, yes, it kind of is. However, I thought we were all kind of past the point of using it as a barometer of quality (I doubt any of us would hail Dominion as one of 2022’s best movies).

It’s funny (in a refreshing way) that Spielberg went from never directing an Oscar winning performance, and in the span of a decade, might just go on to direct 4. I was an idiot
