A long time ago Spielberg planned to do a semi-autobiographical movie and now it's finally happening. He's co-writing with Kushner. It's got Michelle Williams. As he is my favorite director, I cannot contain my excitement

So much for the "West Side Story is his last movie" argument.

Saw this and logged on to make a thread but you beat me to it. This is exactly the kind of thing I've been wanting Spielberg to do for a while. Could potentially be a perfect final film for him, not that I want him to retire.

Not going to complain about him making a very personal film. Looking forward to it.

I really really hope that Spielberg keeps "I'll Be Home" as the title. I think it just has a wonderful sound to it.

Oh fuck yeah! I'm always up for a new Spielberg film. Plus I hope he will film some of it in Arizona (as thats where I currently live haha)
Also the addition of Michelle Williams is great .

Looks like it will be his own Amarcord, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Roma or Radio Days.

Since around the late 90s, Spielberg has mentioned doing an autobiographical film in a few interviews over the years. He always talked about it as kind of a scary prospect that he didn't want to do until he was ready. Color me intrigued.

"My big fear," he explains, "is that my mom and dad won't like it and will think it's an insult and won't share my loving yet critical point of view about what it was like to grow up with them." - Spielberg in 1999His mom died in 2017 and his dad died last year. I imagine that has something (everything) to do with why he's making this.

Tagging pacinoyes . I know you’re one of the biggest supporters of Williams here. I love that she got this. Should be great for her.

I really love her focus within her work ............If you look at her 3 projects she's attached to now - Kelly Reichardt, Spielberg and the Peggy Lee biopic and then start to think of the big ones that fell through - playing Joplin, Christa McAuliffe etc. she seems to have a very clear eyed and big time vision for her career and her roles. Never know how these will play out but on paper they are all........fairly dazzling projects across the board - she does have Venom pending but after that she really ups the artistic ante at 40+.

I think she’s very smart in how she will occasionally do a big budget movie like Venom or Oz the Great and Powerful, and usually even when she’s in something that’s a miss critically or commercially, she’s usually singled out as being the best thing about it like with I Feel Pretty. Not that she hasn’t had a few missteps, but compared to other actors, I think her miss percentage is very low.

Nah, Venom and Oz were atrocious. Michelle is a great actress, but nah. Her "big" movies were wastes of time crap.

He must have must watched Scorsese's deeply personal late career masterpieces Silence and The Irishman and must have thought: "Oh, fuck it, i have to step up my game!"

I was just thinking about how if this does end up becoming Spielberg's own Roma/Amarcord, it would be really interesting to potentially see a Spielberg vs. Scorsese faceoff at the Oscars... especially since it just now dawned on me that they've never been nominated for Best Director before in the same year.

He’s already made several movies about his childhood... I doubt he went flying on a bike with an extraterrestrial for real though.

It's all premature, but if they both are for 2022, i still may give the edge to Scorsese for KOTFM in terms of the directing nomination, a 200 Million "important" Western Epic about the genocide of a Native American tribe, compared to a low budget more personal Spielberg. But i may be wrong, we'll see.
