Obviously it's impossible to really know, but it's nice to speculate.
Henson (Hidden Figures) - film was clearly on the rise, box office success, crowd pleaser good reviews and even won SAG ensemble. Film got into Picture, screenplay and supporting actress.
Bening (20th Century Women) - Governor of AMPAS acting branch, career best reviews, film got into original screenplay.
Adams (Arrival) - film is a box office success, surprising with 8 noms including Picture, Director and Adapted Screenplay. Adams herself received SAG/BAFTA/GG noms.

I don't know if really easy considering how unshowy her role was and AMPAS has never been that eager to nominate performances from sci-fi films.

Amy. But Taraji might have been close as well....

They nominated 2 performances from sci-fi films in the past 3 years. The other 2 contenders just have way less going for them. Adams got a BAFTA and a SAG nom and she was in a much stronger film. That's enough evidence for me.

"Gravity" is apparently not sci-fi since it doesn't use advanced tech or have aliens in it:P Anyway, despite Adams having the stronger film she failed to overtake Huppert and Portman who are in much less accessible films.

Adams for sure. She got in almost everywhere and was in a film they clearly loved. She just got edged out due to the tough group.

I really think Adams is the only choice. I think Blunt may have been closer than Bening tbh.

Bening should have been nominated.
Her and Adams over Streep and Negga

It is so obviously Amy that the thread is pointless.

Adams, I imagine.

It is so obviously Amy that the thread is pointless. I mean gurl was beaten by two sole nominees (Huppert and Negga), so strength of film doesn't always mean you're on top.

Film strength + hitting all the precursors + a 100 million headlining hit = a very narrow miss in most cases. I don't even see a compelling argument for anyone else.

I think it is Adams, but it wouldn't surprise me if Henson was very close. Having now watched 20th Century Women, I think it's safe to say Bening was only going to get in on the basis of her resume (in spite of how good she is in it, she's probably overshadowed by the two supporting females at times).
So yeh, I'd say Adams with Henson a very possible alternative.

I voted Amy Adams. Will hopefully be seeing Arrival soon, I hope, to determine whether or not she was worthy. I've got a feeling she must have been.
