on Broadway in 2022 according to Baz Bamigboye of the UK Daily Mail. Production will be directed by Sam's wife, LaTanya Richardson Jackson. John David will play Boy Willie, Jackson will play Doaker, and Danielle Brooks (Orange is the New Black) will play Berenice in both the play and the film. Looks like they're following the same playbook that the 2010 cast of Fences did of doing the play and then the film. This will be JDW's debut on Broadway as well. Cheers for him for taking a risk like this on the stage early in his career.

That's a great step for JDW. Really like the choices he is making as an actor.

That's a great step for JDW. Really like the choices he is making as an actor. His rise has been pretty astonishing. Saw this Hollywood Reporter Actors Roundtable, and the way the other actors were praising him was incredible. Ben Affleck went into one long speech about how JDW's performance in Malcolm And Marie was one of the best performances he'd ever seen. Gary Oldman said he'd first met JDW over 10 years ago (maybe when he worked with his dad on The Book Of Eli) when he was still an American Football player, and he could barely believe that he'd become such an incredibly talented actor since then.

Agreed that it's such a bold move JDW is taking to do stage (especially since he didn't train formally at stage school, though he probably could afford the best private acting tuition available and obviously both his parents and his sister are experienced stage actors that he could get pointers from). Always wondered why more of the current generation of American film actors ( DiCaprio, Phoenix) never challenged themselves this way. Obviously you have Adam Driver and Bradley Cooper do Broadway, who were stage trained, but Jake Gyllenhaal is one of the few major American film actors of a younger vintage without formal stage training to take up the challenge (though not in anything as text heavy and daunting as an August Wilson play).Especially since he's already successfully done TV ( Ballers) and the nature of the business today means he'll probably be offered prestige TV projects as well, I wonder if he has an even higher probability of winning all the major film/TV/Stage awards even before someone like Driver. He feels like someone who can win at least an Oscar this decade (and if this stage debut works out, perhaps even a Tony). Also, this sounds like one of the first big star productions that might drive Broadway audiences back in 2022, after Covid-19 has pretty much decimated theatre. So Broadway will have more reason to be thankful to the Washington family, who may become a theatrical acting dynasty on par with the Redgraves and Barrymores.

Very nice. So this would be done concurrently with the film version, then? Would be interesting to see if Jackson could coup the Tony and the Oscar back-to-back.

I'm happy he's going for it, despite the risk of failing on stage. I'm sure seeing his father act on stage the past decade or so at the highest level inspired him. Doesn't want to live with the regret of never going for it, and if he succeeds..sky's the limit for him since he'll have that theater credibility. Also helps that he's acting with Mr. Samuel L. Jackson and being directed by LaTanya who are both stage veterans as well, so they can help him in his stage debut. I'm excited for this, if the stars align I might go see this in 2022. The Washingtons becoming a theatrical acting dynasty? You love to see it. Happy that Sam is also returning to the stage as well. I'll be curious to see how he handles the "last act" of his career as he's in his 70s and if he goes after more ambitious prestige projects now outside of Tarantino. The Piano Lesson is a good start. Also, the article sounds like they couldn't get Jenkins for The Piano Lesson if they're looking for a director still. Which is understandable since Jenkins plate is full. Honestly with the actors involved and the story, I feel Spike Lee would be great to direct this, especially if they want this film to be "opened" up..I mean who better. Although with his upcoming musical and NYC 9/11-Covid documentary, he may not have the time.

I'm thinking they do the play in 2022 and then they do the film version in 2023 (depending on when the play will come to Broadway, probably April 2022 if this is a Scott Rudin production..lol). Definitely won't take 6 years like they did on Fences. August Wilson, the man who keeps on giving.

When do we think tickets will be going on sale?? Usually they go on sale a couple of months before previews start. So I'm assuming it'll be in July. I'm sure there will be an announcement. If you sign up on here on the Broadway.com page for the play with your email address, they'll send you a notification when tickets go on sale: www.broadway.com/shows/the-piano-lesson/

Great for Fisher. He was tremendous as Cyborg in Zack Snyder's Justice League. Sad that Joss Whedon tried to hide that performance in a fit of pique and ego.

And more than likely they'll bring him over to the film adaptation as well when they begin filming. So it'll be cool to see him in a prestige project.

Great for Ray Fisher. Dude deserves all the best roles he can get, especially after WB & Whedon almost tried to basically destroy his career.

mhynson27Pretty sure they'd be on sale now - yes - since it stages in September. Previews are their "test period" where they work out any issues in the plays or in the staging/set up - better tickets are usually easier to get in previews - but some of the best performances I've seen are in previews tbh

JDW is the star of this and this is a major performance...... and I didn't think much of him in movies prior to this - he could easily win a Tony for this role - if the year isn't stacked (might be?) and if they had a better production date - and also hard to know where he "fits" but it's probably lead which is always tougher in the Tony Awards which like I always say are the most "bullshit" of all awards for the last 30 years - and that includes the Emmy's and Grammy's ffs ........... ............and eventualy when they film it.........he could possibly win an Oscar (theoretically)........not kidding....and everything in this production is geared towards him also. Production is quite solid - but didn't find its rhythym until about 1/3 of the way in - this play is somewhat misdirected actually and runs too long too. A couple of tweaks and it will play much better when this officially opens - but when it opens it's going to be the JDW show...... There's some problems in the specific staging too where characters are placed on the stage - which always happens in previews but was a big problem on this night - including Jackson who was positioned with his back to the audience which was ridiculous for some of his funniest lines ........this is becoming a simple thing that is now always coming up in previews as a NOT so simple thing - it also happened in American Buffalo too in previews. .........Jackson is quite humourous though so if you're going for him you'll be happy too and I suspect he could get a Tony nomination but again - the date and the fact that he is less the person you'll be talking about makes him harder to read......on the other hand there's no question which category he would go in ......and the Tony's may be BS nowadays but usually don't engage in category fraud so that's a plus for him..... Good, very moving, not quite great but with a special performance.......and with some tightening up could be even better

My first Broadway show, and I really enjoyed it. Agree that JDW was great.
